Craig Forrest getting injured.
David Hill in goal.
Phil Parked looking bemused during pitch invasion.
Kevin O’Callaghan being sweary.
Terracing falling to bits.

I liked the Goldstone.

Until the age of 7, back in the 60s, I lived less than half a mile away, and I remember it from the outside. My dad also went to at least one game there but must have thought I was too young to go along with him.

I also remember going there in the 1980s when Town played there.

Late season 88-89. The A12 was full of Suffolk football fans. We were off to Goldstone the same day that Sudbury were playing the Vase final at Wembley(I want to say against Tamworth?)

We won 1-0 courtesy of a D'Avray header. Some wag in the away end (pre-internet and mobile phones etc) decided to announce loudly that Stoke were 3 up at Swindon which would've meant us closing the gap to the play-offs. Turned out it was the other way round.

Sudbury lost the vase final in a replay at Peterborough I think.

1990-91. Lost 1-2 to a last minute free-kick which got them in the play-offs, cue pitch invasion and a few coins being lobbed at them from the away end. I actually saw one coin in full flight as it left the throwers arm and watched it land smack on the forehead of some poor chap. He was temporarily stunned then continued celebrating. Can remember Scott Houghton being on loan from Spurs and having a blinder. Balding Clive Walker played for Brighton and copped some stick.

1991-92. Don't remember a great deal but I know we drew.

Talking of Sudbury, and also how much things have changed for Brighton, I remember Sudbury holding them to a draw in the FA Cup in 1996 at the Priory Stadium and then completing the giant killing away from home on pens.

Favourite memory was Sudbury goalie, Dean Garnham, having a cigarette straight after the match whilst a MOTD reporter tried to interview him. Summed up non league football in a flash.

Remember going there in my old fiat127 aged 18.
88/89 season....I'm sure we won 1 nil.
About 29 people there!

I'm struggling to recall the date but I know it was an evening fixture at the Goldstone (probably late 80's). In the away end, needless to say and after the final whistle we were locked in the ground for a good half and hour after. It seemed longer on the night. Must have mistaken us for Milwall I suppose?
I remember being pretty miffed about the delay getting home -only 23 miles for me but a darn sight worst for anyone else getting back to Suffolk. It did have an eventual upside for me. Later back at work, I moaned about the incident and was overheard by one of the lads in the office who was a Brighton fan. He told his Dad who through connections with the management, for the next time we clashed got me a main stand seat next to the directors box (buckshee of course), and access to the members lounge and bar. I was certainly home later than half an hour after that session, I can tell you!

Sudbury were the leading Suffolk non-league side for years but they resigned from the Southern Premier League late 90s, then merged with the Wanderers to become AFC Sudbury. I'm assuming finances, or lack of them, was the reason.

It had a bit of character I suppose (and I met Des Lynham, Jimmy Hill and Fatboy Slim in the car park after the match):

Went to see us play at Withdean in either 2005 or 2006 under Royle at the fag end of his reign. Weird place - open temporary stands, running track, felt a bit like being at a school sports day. All the Brighton fans were in celebratory mood because John Prescott had just approved their stadium plans.

From memory Sam Parkin scored one of his rare goals for us and possibly Colin Kazim-Richards scored for them - think it finished 1-1.

My main memory of the day was that, because it wasn't a proper stadium, you could hear almost everything said on the pitch - bit like watching a non-league game. And at one point we heard Jim Magilton shouting to the hapless Adam Proudlock: 'Adam, will you f***ing jump?!', which made the whole stand laugh.

Both clubs have come a long way since that day - particularly Brighton.

Edit: just looked it up and it was Dean Hammond who scored for them, not Kazim-Richards (but he did play, and I think went on to play in the Euros for Turkey three years later).

The one and only time I went to Goldstone, went down the night before 5 up in a mate's Morris Marina, went to a nightclub recommended by a Town fans with Brighton links (in my mind that's YOU Keno, but I'm told I'm wrong).

Said Town recommender didn't turn up, saw our first live and in the flesh gay kids (possibly just before Colin & Barry on Eastenders?)

Almost got into a fight after accusing someone of taking one of our pints, turns out it wasn't.

Slept in the car in a back street, breakfast in The Lanes displaying football on the promenade @7am

We won 2-1 after being one down at half time (Wilson D'Avray)

Afterwards it kicked off outside (No surprise in the 80s) think one of others got sent flying by a Police horse.

Been to Amex, we were soundly beaten 3-0.

Yes, a couple trips to the goldstone around 89 - 91 era. One where we’d thought we’d somehow sneaked into the playoffs only to find out it was misinformation from someone listening to scores on a transistor radio.

Other memory, a Scott Houghton wonder goal from 35 yards.

I lived in Amherst Crescent, which Lullington Avenue joins.

It was very near to Aldrington station and our house backed on to the railway line.

I remember one time when the Flying Scotsman went by, but being the age I was I had visions of a Scotsman in a kilt somehow magically flying by in some sort of flying contraption, until it was pointed out to me that it was a train.

People ware on that occasion allowed on to the track to get a better view - I assume normal trains were cancelled - and it was fascinating to find a snake under a board by the railway line.

I remember being absolutely terrified on my one trip to the Goldstone Ground.

Was a few weeks after Hillsborough. I was 9. Got there and saw the fence at the front and started getting really worried.

Needless to say the stand wasn’t even half full and there was no issue but having watched Hillsborough on the TV it was scary as hell arriving for that one without the knowledge or understanding that this wasn’t going be overcrowded or subject to any of the same issues the Semi Final had with people being pushed towards one section.

Strange what you remember as a kid when fearful.

Goldstone, yes. I was at the Clive Walker game. They were called the Tesco Bags after their shirt fronts.

Away terrace was side on, so a great view. Not many of us there. Similar view to current away fans at Portman Road, but lower down at the Portman Terrace level.
