Playing out from the back 09:27 - Sep 15 with 2159 views | DJR | Muric is clearly a great shot-stopper and commands his area but having now seen him play in every league game, it does not seem to me that he is as good playing it out from the back, or playing it long, as Hladky. And I realise it is difficult to judge after seeing him in only two games, but I do not get the impression that O'Shea offers as much in terms of playing it out from the back as Woolfy. Having said this, it would appear to be the case that McKenna prefers the additional defensive solidity that Muric and presumably O'Shea offers us, and he knows far more than I do. But I did get the impression yesterday that lack of playing out from the back yesterday did mean we rarely got control of the ball and often played ourselves into danger.
Playing out from the back on 09:32 - Sep 15 with 2085 views | Dubtractor | I think we'll see a very different tactical approach in home and away games. We'll need to turn away games to dirge, as we did yesterday, but be much more expansive at home, as against Fulham. Playing the risk heavy approach of inviting the press against teams like Brighton would be suicide. We saw that very painfully at Man City. [Post edited 15 Sep 2024 10:24]

Playing out from the back on 09:34 - Sep 15 with 2047 views | SheffordBlue | O'Shea has still done relatively little training with the squad and I think yesterday it may have been a mix of that, the very effective press from Brighton and just taking fewer risks in this game in that area of the pitch. Agree that meant that we often gave up possession when we went longer, etc but that did allow us to keep our defensive shape well against a team who are excellent had finding spaces. Muric's medium and long range distribution in preseason was really good and not sure if his injury has maybe impacted this?

Also thought he looked very good finding Townsend time after time in the cup game. I think we were purposely quite risk averse at the back yesterday, which I was all for personally. The plan worked. It's good that we've shown we can adapt when needed. [Post edited 15 Sep 2024 9:54]

Playing out from the back on 10:02 - Sep 15 with 1822 views | strikalite | We've been spoilt really with Hladky in terms of his ability with the ball at his feet, it's very rare to find a keeper that good, now it's more of a case of mixing it up and making the right decision for the ability Muric has..which may not be a bad thing because there's not a chance in this league that we can play exactly like we have been playing given the quality we're up against..

That is certainly true, but there were several occasions in the first half when Axel was in acres of space, with Wes ahead of him, but we didn't seem to look to play it to him, which seemed in part a reluctance on the part of Muric to look to release the ball early, and in part a reluctance on the part of O'Shea to want it. But this is not to say that this is not what McKenna wanted. [Post edited 15 Sep 2024 11:49]

Playing out from the back on 11:51 - Sep 15 with 1493 views | Vegtablue | I think Muric's passing will improve to the standard which impressed Burnley fans, a team which passed opponents off the park in their procession to the Championship title in 22/23. Many considered this to be one of his key strengths. O'Shea hasn't looked as comfortable playing the ball as Woolf but he may also just need a bit more time. Kompany liked his CBs to be proficient in this area after all and we'll have watched his performances last season. It may be that both Muric and O'Shea are a small step down when it comes to the short stuff, but not to the extent that it stops us playing out from the back. Like others I'm sure yesterday was tactical. Baleba was single-handedly dominating Morsy and Phillips for a good part of the game, while our full-backs were getting smothered by their wingers. To have persisted with playing out from the back would have been to do a Southampton.

Oshea is more of a long ball defender. Not a hoofer but those long diags to the flanks. He's one of the best in the air and fast too.

Playing out from the back on 12:54 - Sep 15 with 1342 views | MK1 | Muric is proving and will continue to prove what a fantastic signing he is. Better shot stopper than Hladky and will be better with his feet given time. O'Shea and Greaves in front will provide cover and options in front of him. Defensively we have improved from last season and we are only 4 games in. We aren't going to be the walk over many so called PL experts thought we were. Teams are going to have to earn their points against us and Muric will be a huge reason for that.

Playing out from the back on 15:09 - Sep 15 with 1133 views | Vic | Music seems to have more of a presence about him that Hladky - much more commanding in the ball and a good shot stopper. I was very impressed with him yesterday? But agree, his passing out isn’t yet up to Hladky standards last season. Can’t have everything I guess, but think that with practice and process it will improve. I’m impressed with how much the defence seems to have improved in 4 games. So much better than last season and yesterday they really did defend as a team and didn’t really concede too many clear openings, despite all the Brighton pressure. And credit to Brighton, they were mightily impressive. Their press was up there with Man City so in my book it was an excellent point.
