My summary of the season so far 12:41 - Oct 7 with 2862 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

Excellent performances at Portman Road. The next 2 home games are both must win and anything less is giving ourselves a big hole to climb back out of. I think we've got our approach spot on at home so far and the results will come.

On the road we've been second best every game. The point at Brighton was very good, but on another day, we lose that. With two tough away games after the break, they are both teams who can put 2 or 3 past us if they have their shooting boots on.

I feel we need to tweak it. I'd like Szmodics starting and playing close to Delap as a 10. I feel Szmodics is the only player prepared to run beyond the striker. We're not good enough against better teams at being ball to feet all the time and we have no threat in behind unless it's Delap who can't do it all himself. He looked knackered after 70 mins Saturday.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

I’m very happy with the start we’ve made. The first Two games were always going to be a huge task to get anything from, that said the performance First half against Liverpool was excellent.
Following the baptism of fire, we’ve adapted and been very difficult to beat. A real sign of how good Kmc is. Russell Martin could learn a lot.
Saturday seems like we were the architects of our own downfall, Muric seemingly intent on making things more difficult than they need be. Added to the fact that West Ham scored their Second and Third goals at arguably the best time (for them).
I wouldn’t say Everton and Leicester are must win, we can’t put that level of pressure on ourselves, without doubt a win is very much needed from one of them then a draw would make it of Six
1 Win, 5 draws and only 1 defeat.

If they're not must win, what are? Where do the points come?

They are must win. If you don't take maximum points off the teams around you at home, it's asking a lot in other games where we won't have as good of a chance.

7 Games, one bad performance and a half against Saints wasn't great but we've certainly proved we can compete at this level.

Think whilst Saturday was a nightmare, it will cement in the players heads that in this League you have to be on it at all times and do the basics well, which will stand them in good stead going forward.

We really do need to beat Everton, to not only give us a boost and 3 points, but also to get this win monkey off our back.

It was a weird feeling on Saturday, losing, something we haven't had much of in the past 2 years (City and Liverpool aside) and it hit hard. I'm a bit calmer now, and looking at the big picture these things will happen, but I'm confident performances like that will be few and far between.

The players will chomping at the bit when we play Everton, we will be a wounded beast ready to bite.

Follow the Town, up and down!

We absolutely must win one of Everton or Leicester.

Shouldn't even be up for debate

The only real disappointment was the West Ham game as we went to a team under pressure and gave them the confidence to play to their full ability and get their mojo back. Otherwise, we have competed which was my minimum hope this season.

A win will be nice of course, but if we stay out of the relegation zone I'll be delighted!

Think we need to get used to being second best on the road. Realistically if we manage to pick up 15 points away from home, we have done well.

I agree with you though that we need to find a way of playing away from home and at times we could do with being a bit more direct and using Szmodics more effectively.

It's a tough balance because ultimately you need to be able to keep possession for spells of games away from home or you are going to face wave after wave of attacks. And teams have too much quality not to create chances and score goals. That Brighton game is probably a 1 in 10 in terms of the domination they had without managing to score. You can't be too direct and keep giving the ball away.

I think you misread my post. I don’t see both Everton and Leicester as Must Wins. Certainly not winning either is a big problem. Winning One is a must, drawing the other would keep some momentum going putting aside the West Ham result. I see the other home wins coming from Saints, Wolves, Palace and one of Brentford, Forest or Bournemouth. As Kmc says though”it’s one game at a time”.

Got to be looking at 4 points minimum from those two. Massively important.

I'd love to know the definition of 'must win' in such posts. We will be odds against in both those home games and 4 points would be fine. The math is off if you have both as must win.

I expect us to be second best too, but I was disappointed to see us concede 4 and lose the game the way we did. Those results are easier to take if it's an Arsenal or City where you half expect it, but to a struggling West Ham, that was a rough result.

On your final point, you're right but I'm not sure we have enough players who can look after the ball. Hutchinson is secure on it most of the time, Delap can offer an out ball but we are struggling on the wings. They're good Championship players playing at the level above.

You can’t compare previous teams and previous seasons.
That would be like Leeds saying at the beginning of last season going on the most recent final Championship table points all we need for Promotion is 93 Points. We know how that went for them.

I can understand why some people think Must Win is a bit OTT after 7 games.

On the assumption that 35 points are needed to stay up, nothing is must win until March or April, but obviously that is taking it to the extreme.

Realistically we won't get many points from 9 of our remaining games against Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Villa or Spurs. Which means that realistically we have to pick up wins against the teams around us, which include Everton and Leicester.

I've enjoyed a lot about it.

Said over the weeks we looked like a prem club in organisation and it just felt like we just needed that time to get our attacking phases Into gear.

I've said my piece about hutch etc so I won't cover that again.

But the interesting thing is the greaves O'shea partnership.

Imo and I know many disagree but o sheahas been the better cb over the last few games. Now.. is Greaves missing the calm collective wolfy next to him? Is Greaves having to cover to much ground because clarke isn't covering davis as well as szmodics did?

There's quite a few questions at the moment and it'll be intriguing what answers KM has to them. Something isn't quite there. Is it just time or is it selection. We can only sit back and wait and see.

Of course they're must wins.

I'm more worried about Leicester tbh, we did get lucky against them last season and they've improved since. So have we, so it should be a contest - but I am nervous.
I think there's also the addd pressure of the playing the other promoted sides which can hinder us.

Somehow I'm less worried about Everton.

Next 5 home games are against other teams in the bottom half .
These are the games we need to pick up points in and not panick if we come away from Brentford and Spurs empty handed

I take your point but to add context to the point I'm making, in 2 of the last 3 seasons, 34 and 35 points has seen you relegated. Leicester went down with 9 wins and 7 draws.

We need to win games and the Everton and Leicester games are must wins. We probably will pick up a couple of wins which none of us are expecting because that's how football goes, but if we don't win the games at home where you have to win if you want to stay up, then it's a massive hole to fight your way out of to stay up.
