FA Cup R3 19:27 - Dec 2 with 1483 viewsZx1988

Have there ever been fewer non-league clubs in the third round draw than there were this season (2)?

Will this be par for the course (excepting all-non-league R2 ties) going forwards, with the scrapping of replays giving full-time sides the advantage in terms of fitness over 120mins?

Did Dion Dublin just say Arsenal v Man Utd is the kind of game the FA Cup needs? My word

A few nice ties in there for the likes of Salford, Tamworth, etc, though.

At least a few of the lower league fans and players will have a match to remember.

Rather makes a mockery of the 'giant killing' montage in advance of the draw.

It's a completely different competition nowadays, and it almost feels as if the broadcasters and the FA have lost the right to the pre-2000s heritage of it all.

Apparently at least twice a season for the last zillion years just isn't enough

Probably suits him right down to the ground.

Means he gets to do his studio duties from a cosy purpose-built setup with decent accommodation, amenities, and grub, rather than from a hastily-erected portakabin in a muddy field.

I don't think having no replays reduces the lower league teams chances. If anything it probably improves them. They're more likely to be the winner in a one off game rather than have to play to the same standard as the higher league team over 2 games.

It probably is more likely to hit a lower league teams financially though with out the extra gate receipts coming from a replay.

Plucky little Norwich who have never won a major trophy will look forward to their home game against a bigger club.

Obviously this will be a live game, as is Man United against anybody in the FA Cup.

I imagine that the location of the tie will have a big bearing.

It'd be interesting to see an analysis of how non-league giant killings have occurred - whether it's over one or two ties, and in whose stadium the decisive fixture takes place.

I think a one-off game at a league side's stadium would heavily favour the home team.

It'd be nice if any non-league sides who reach the 3rd round and beyond could chose to play home or away if they get a league club in the draw.

People care so little that our tie not yet mentioned?

Ipswich Town v Bristol Rovers

Leeds United v Harrogate Town looks tasty! Harrogate's dream tie, I imagine.

I did notice that we now have Van Nistleroys Liecester in the 3rd round plus Wayne Roony's Plymouth however no Frank Lampards Coventry have already been knocked out?

I like the Liverpool v Accrington Stanley.

First time they have ever played each other

I disagree slightly.

Not sure if there were many but it did seem a fair few where non league sides held for a draw on 90 minutes but lost in ET. Who's to say they couldn't have won the replay esp if it became a home game for them. Readings game is an example i think.

a niche perspective

There have been some seasons where no non-league teams have got through.

Millwall v Dag & Red is ‘Wall v Wham in all but name, I bet the police are delighted that came out.

Harrogate v Leeds, Man City v Salford, Liverpool v Accrington, Tamworth v Tottenham, Newcastle v Bromley are interesting, although more so if the lower team had been at home in the cases where they’re not…. But being away will be a big pay day and can make an enormous difference to their finances. Several clubs have had big cup draws and it’s allowed them to use the money to fund a promotion.

And I’ve just read on Twitter that Everton v Peterborough could see Ashley Young playing against his son.

I was at Reading vs Harborough and yes, it was like a completely different match when extra time started. Harborough had been battering Reading after the red card, but, even against ten men, they just couldn’t keep up over two hours of football.
