Basically the jump to this division for the squad and club is massive
Despite this we are remaining competitive in games
But we’re letting points get away due to the gap
We now have to bridge that gap, get some points, and there are different ways to do that

I think in that last point he’ll be referring to January transfer window, but maybe some tactical switches can also be made.

I think the injuries to Axel and Hirst have been hugely damaging for what McKenna wants to do this season, and hugely damaging to our points total. Hirst on 70mins yesterday would have been huge.

A bit of McCarthyism might be needed?

I thought against Brighton there was a bit of McCarthy backs to the wall, sitting deep, digging in.

But we had a fit Axel in the team.

At this level you need to be able to carry threat, and make the opposition wary of counter.

We don’t seem fast enough getting up the pitch, unlike many of our opponents. Fulham, Bournemouth and Brentford are good examples.

But maybe we need to be more defensive on the right side. Or maybe play Morsy, Phillips and Cajuste.

How about Cajuste as the 10? Johnson deeper right back.
Or a 4-3-3?

Tbf though we did defend deep and dig in yesterday, Bournemouth weren't exactly missing clear cut chance after clear cut chance?

In those phases we also had some pretty good chances, Chaplin and Szmodics off the top of my head. I genuinely believe had Muric not got the zoomies we would have won that game and this forum would look very different.

I do agree with you that we miss a bit of pace though. Ogbene injury is a killer as well. I know he hadn't set the world alight, but he is a different level of athlete to what we have in the squad. Ogbene, Axel, OShea right hand side would have been pretty handy.

It feels pretty likely that Hirst would have started at least one of the last two games. A real pity.

Easy to revert to just defending more or with more numbers, but as you say we need to offer a threat ourselves. No point defending all day if your defenders aren't quite good enough (sadly Johnson fell into that bracket yesterday). Tuanzebe a different story.

We actually had plenty of creative opportunities second half yesterday, opportunities to put the game to bed.

Don't get me wrong, we had spells when we sat back (forced back depending on your viewpoint) but we offered a threat going forward.

The difference is we cannot afford to be profligate when we have opportunities to score.

Yep pace is the biggest issue we have.

We can blame Muric for yesterday but like so many games this season, we’ve lacked the pace to get out when we’re under pressure. Bournemouth could push higher yesterday knowing we had absolutely no threat in behind.

If we had the striker and winger we tried signing on deadline day I’m certain we’d have 6-8 more points.

Add to that Ogbene, who with Tuanzebe down the right would have been a great combo. When you have a squad that lacks PL experience, losing 2 x players with some experience is huge.

You can only go with the cards you have been played or in this case the players who can still play . . .

Said it in august, not getting in that extra forward will kill us this season.

You mean to arrest all the liberals, "communists" and gays?

Also I think we beat Man U if Hirst had been fit.

Plenty of fans pointing out not getting that addional striker in was going to hurt us. And the club would've feared the same.

Axel is a huge loss and a crying shame, but maybe that's why he was "free", in part anyway.

Hirst, Axel and I'd add Ogbene to the 'massively missed' list.

Ogbene would have offered us something more on the right and would have meant Omari had slightly less attention.

I think we're quickly realising that Man Utd was a huge two points dropped. They were very poor. Far weaker than both Palace & Bournemouth.
