Crazy! 15:26 - Jan 14 with 2130 views | Vic | No, not the mascot, but the fact that Villa are paying £20m for an established Dutch international with a proven goal scoring record and we're paying Villa (we hope) for an player who with a handful of games & no goals in the EPL and an OK record in the EFL. I know I know we can look at Liam Delap who didn't set the EFL alight last season but the disparity is stark.

Crazy! on 15:50 - Jan 14 with 1872 views | HighgateBlue | Yes, on paper they appear to be getting a better deal with Malen than we are with Philogene. Especially given that we had agreed £18m for him, and he's been disappointing since then. However, it's worth bearing in mind that Philogene is a little over 3 years younger and hence you would think has a potential higher ceiling and potential higher resale value. I appreciate the word is 'potential' though. Bird in the hand and all that...
Crazy! on 15:50 - Jan 14 with 1878 views | Mckenna1263 | I couldn't agree more. Didn't get a look in at Villa either. Seems like a big gamble and Villa appear to be getting more value for their money. We don't seem to have the ability to look at anyone outside of English leagues.

Yes just one loan player from abroad, if we don't stay up we'll have a team of players familiar with the Championship.

Also Malen is only contracted until 2026 compared to Philogene being contacted until 2029. That will be a massive reason why their fees are similar. To those that are comparing these transfers and wondering why were after Philogene and not Malen, you are comparing apples and oranges. We wouldn't have a hope in hells chance of signing Malen. He currently plays for a club in the Champions League and is mulling over a move to another in the Champions League, he will also demand wages way out of our league. Our realistic pool of players are young rough diamonds, overlooked gems in their prime (these are rare as rocking horse poop, see vardy), or players over their peak looking for for more gametime. We are mainly sticking to the former as if it works the pay-off is a good chance of survival and huge transfer fees returned on sale. We have no chance of players in the same pool of Malen this season. Stay up for 2-3 seasons and that will change.

Bottom line is our investors have put a lot of money over the last few years and will be looking for a return on that investment which could be selling the club for a profit but more likely from trading players.

Exactly. Will be on £100,000 + a week at Villa. No way we can compete with them at the moment. Patience is the key regarding our signings. Hopefully the likes of Clarke, Broadhead etc pay off in the coming seasons. Play the long game.

Where have you seen his contract is only until 26? BBC says it hasn't been released, paying 20m on an a 1.5 season contract seems mad!

Whilst I can certainly see some players being sold at vast profits it certainly won't keep us in the Premier league. There comes a time when even the best or one of the best teams of management like Town get a player who is brought in to replace one sold and he doesn't come up to scratch. To continually do that would be a miracle especially in today's market where clubs will be tracking the same players. I think Gamechanger 20's idea would be to establish Town as a Premier League club. Make the stadium 40,000 seater and eventually sell the whole package in 5-10 years time.

Not sure if I'll be due a woosh, but this is contract length at previous club, not the new contract length at new club.

Yep that’s a really helpful explaination. I wasn’t really sayin* that we’re making a mistake or anything like that - but just the fact that we’re still a long way from sitting at the top table with the other prem teams. We’re 8n the prem, but the difference between what we can do and other teams can do i , well, crazy!
