Harry Clarke would have been a better option at right wing back 09:33 - Jan 31 with 1606 viewsPacittiJohn

than the fit options we currently have. Although I wasn’t a fan of Harry defensively, he had energy and passion driving forward and an impressive range of passing. Can’t see Godfrey or Johnson filling that role. Still think we should play 3-5-2 with Hirst and Delap as centre forwards playing close together. Concerned that it’s taking so long to get another No 9. Surely a back up No 9 can’t be that hard to get even if it’s a journeyman. We seem to have a surfeit of players for the 3 positions behind Delap, but apart from Broadhead and Chaplin, I’m not sure there up to the required standard yet?

We all love Harry but he isn’t a PL quality fullback.

Neither is Ben Johnson and yet he plays most weeks. HC seems to be a bit of a scapegoat whenever he plays, but offers a lot more when he does than Johnson.

I can't agree. Far too easily pulled inside or left stranded up the pitch. Maybe it's that he's a little too enthusiastic, which results in him leaving his post when he shouldn't.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I doubt we will be playing a wingback system much more this season. I think it was an attempt to shore things up over a difficult period following the Newcastle defeat.

Moving forward, we need points and we will be more attack minded with three attacking players behind Delap.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Not yet he's only 23 and getting games playing for a team at the top of the championship will do him the world of good. He is still developing

I don't rate Clarke, Johnson or Godfrey as full backs all better in a 5.
We are vulnerable to good wide players and at present I don't see much changing.

Agree. I love his energy, strength and guts, but he needs to develop his awareness and judgement. Hopefully he's in the right place to do that now, he gets the game time, and he comes back to us next season ready for PL season 2.

defensively his positioning is all over the place

I agree it is a shame because he is useful going forward, I think we have lost something by not having that overlapping option at times

Being able to adapt is crucial. We have two guys who give defences a right headache, why not use them together. We need goals & wins. Also agree about Harry Clarke going forward. Don't know why we don't try 442, it would help us in midfield as currently we are overrun there whoever plays.

If we’re trying to avoid getting overrun in midfield then I’m not sure that switching from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 makes a right lot of difference. If anything it makes it worse because the 10 plays further forward. A more logical move (assuming stiffening the midfield is the goal) would be to go 4-3-3. But of course you then lose something in attack.
