Yep, absolutely gutted. The best we’ve had for a VERY long time. He can’t be replaced. Great respect from the club though, letting him go for free, fair play.

Sam Morsy gone on 18:49 - Jul 24 with 1381 views | HighgateBlue | Really disappointing. The stats say that he was our best midfielder last season, despite Cajuste getting so very much praise from fans. I appreciate our midfield was not up to it in the Premier League, but I'm convinced he's still up to it in the Championship. Ashley Young is a unique specimen, but Morsy is fully 6 years younger. It's disappointing to lose a legend, it's disappointing not to get a fee for him, when there's no suggestion that Kuwait SC is impoverished, and it's a little confusing when Kieran's last statement on the matter was that he wanted to keep him. We've torn up the last year of his contract without even the usual "we couldn't guarantee him first team football" type reasoning. I find it all very odd - maybe there were more machinations or fallings out behind the scenes, maybe not. Either way, I suppose we have to just move on and remember the truly great times and performances that he gave us. Let's find us a new king but remember the old one.

Reading between the lines with Morsy's statement, he wanted a contract extension and we were not willing to offer it and he was not happy with that. I do not think we should be offering 34 year olds two year contracts. The club probably said lets wait and see how things go and he wanted more security. All in all unfortunately the club's interests and Sam's interests didn't line up so we have a parting of the ways.

From a footballing perspective I'm OK with it. There was always going to come a time when Morsy would transition from the side, I didn't expect it to be now or quite so abrupt, but it was coming. I thought a natural end might be for him to play a role this season while seeing his contract out, hopefully get us back up and say his goodbyes. These things don't always work out like that though. There's no doubt it leaves a big hole off the pitch in terms of the respect he had earned, his leadership and drive, but its an opportunity now for others to step up and write a new chapter. I don't quite share the sentiment on Morsy's performances last season but that's probably not a debate for now. Good luck to him and thanks for the memories Sam. A great captain, great leader and made an incredible contribution on and off the pitch in his 4 years with us.

I think it’s a really nice touch to let him go on a free, shows a lot of respect.

Sam Morsy gone on 19:27 - Jul 24 with 1099 views | BlueOura | I'm really gutted but at the same time so grateful to Sam for everything he did for us. A fantastic leader and captain and also a wonderful footballer, there were times in the Championship promotion season where he was absolutely unplayable and just dominated the midfield. In fact it was most weeks to be honest. I don't want to put too much pressure on Matusiwa but he has very big shoes to fill in that role, the club too really need to pull some big signings out of the bag in the midfield area if they are prepared to let Sam go in this critical season. We need some big players and some big characters in there if we are going to challenge for the top 2 again.

I struggle with the contradictions in player statements like this. I don’t mean this to be critical of Sam, but rather of the accepted norms. He acknowledges he wasn’t expecting to leave, acknowledges that the club turned around his career, his life and mental health even. And then gave him the best experiences of his career… But then his agent and club can’t reach a financial deal for the next stage. He won’t be able to buy what he experienced here. What’s more important: one’s happiness and sense of worth and achievement or an extra 0 on the end of your bank balance? But yes, the reality of life, one big final pay day, etc. I understand that. I just question whether we sometimes lose sight of the wood for the value we attribute to the trees. I hope he has a successful and transformative time in Kuwait and that he doesn’t regret not having another year and potentially another promotion here. Most of us have been around long enough to know there’s no value you can put on promotions at a club like ours. As I say, I don’t mean this to be disrespectful. He left for financial reasons and I just don’t think they’re the meaningful reasons. But he very much goes with my best wishes and I respect and understand his decision. An overly used word, but he is a club legend.

A fantastic captain no doubt about it. I think we were all shocked when we managed to steal him from boro. Two thoughts here first of all is he the only player on town history to start every game as captain? And secondly spare a thought for Paul Cook. He said this signing will change the team, and boy was he right!
Sam Morsy gone on 19:45 - Jul 24 with 983 views | PioneerBlue | Today is Sam Morsy’s and what a leader he was. My POTY in each of his seasons except the last one. However the game moves and we have already replaced him on the pitch (Azor) and presumably his dedication and focus of the pitch (Young).

Agree completely. He could’ve seen it out here for another year IMO. But he wanted that little bit of security I suppose, could’ve had a career ending injury this season and would’ve been left out in the cold come this time next year - can understand both sides and selfishly we would’ve all wanted him to stay. As he said, ‘that’s football’.

He’s effectively taken early retirement from a playing point of view. Absolutely his prerogative, good on him, but while we’re talking of contradictions there’s definitely one of a player who clearly sets high standards of himself and those around him, wants to be the best he can be, but also walked away from a chance of another successful championship season at a club where he’s adored in favour of a dog sh1t league to play in front of an average attendance of 533. Maybe he feels like he’s been there and done it here now, maybe there are more important things in his life, got to respect it. If that’s the conclusion he’s come to then it’s probably right for all parties.

Yep, could have easily done another year. But if we go up, that would have been it. So I do understand where he’s coming from. He’s very much a family man, and that extra cash provides security for a lot more than just him. Yet, you don’t get many opportunities to create memories that last a lifetime. Anyway, best of luck to him.
