Note to defending player : Please detach arm from socket and remove when ball comes toward you.

Exactly what I said on another post.

That's the test they apply i.e. is there enough to overturn the on field decision. In this case, they clearly felt there wasn't. Not sure where a defender is supposed to put their arm in that situation but it clearly hit it.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

So it should be IMO. It’s meant to be there to overturn clear & obvious errors, I wouldn’t say that was one.

Carragher and Neville are both saying penalty but I do side with Moyes and Tarkowski more

Yes it has come from a long way out but isn't his arm in exactly the possession the law deems to be natural?

I don't get the leaning down thing, if you're leaning down, you're surely not deliberately bending yourself down to block it with the arm?

Surely "natural position" only applies when the ball is fired at the hand/arm so close that cannot be removed in time (ball to hand), and not for shots where you have time to move your arm or body and not lean your arm into it (hand to ball).

He leant into the ball though not down. I thought it was a pen on 1st view as I thought his movement was to the ball on purpose to block it and regardless of the arm being natural he put his body/arm in the way on position and got it slightly wrong but its the risk you take when you make that movement. Another day hits harm above the sleeve line on the should maybe and its a good block.

Agreed it was a 'stay with the original decision' and glad they did as this is how they said they would use VAR.

I think ex players are pretty good judge of other players mindset and I think they called it Tarkowski 100% knew the risk and it was a pen despite whatever protests he was trying to fake on camera.

I thought it was a penalty. If his arm is in that position and he had stood still, then I would say no penalty. He leans into, making a move towards the ball - to me that has been a penalty since year dot.

Well, it's pretty clear this was a close call given the new handball interpretation & all it proves is that, even with VAR, there will still be highly debatable calls such as this one. If it had gone against Town, we'd be raging, but the other way around, we'd de celebrating. This is the type of decision that you understand VAR is going to look at, but it isn't a "clear & obvious error" so it shows that restricting VAR interventions to such errors isn't going to work. The bottom line is that VAR is always going to be controversial in football as so many key decisions, such as this one, require a huge amount of interpretation & opinion.

I think he does lean into the ball but he’s a defender and he’s trying to block a shot on goal. But at the same time he is trying to keep his arms as close to his torso as possible. For me it’s not a penalty.

Thought exactly the same at the time.

I don't think they wouldve called penalty if the ref didnt.

I suppose its fair enough in a way *as long as it goes for you

I thought that was a harsh penalty decision, but many others thought it was. It simply highlights regardless of what the rule is it is still very much left to interpretation.
