RIP Dickie Bird. on 12:51 - Sep 23 with 659 views | gainsboroughblue | I remember his last test match in 1996. Athers had arranged for him to have a guard of honour leading to much emotion, tears from Dickie etc. Two minutes later he gave Athers out lbw.

RIP Dickie Bird. on 13:22 - Sep 23 with 529 views | mellowblue | R.I.P Dickie, Barnsley boy and as Phil said, big Barnsley supporter. Did not breakthrough at Yorkshire C.C.C and took up umpiring. One of the best. Saw him at Headingly couple of months ago. Looked very chipper.

How are you Lad?
Very good Dickie
Are you still working?
A bit. I’ve written your obit for The Guardian.
Will I like it?
You’ll be dead won’t you? So you'll never know.
(To passing strangers, loudly )
I’ll have to trust him won’t I? I’ll have to trust him won’t I?” — David Hopps (@davidkhopps.bsky.social) 2025-09-23T13:33:40.408Z

RIP Dickie Bird. on 16:01 - Sep 23 with 292 views | Radlett_blue | Bird was usually a popular umpire as he was always friendly with the players & enjoyed a bit of banter, while he also had a reputation as a very fair umpire (unlike some English umpires, despite the "best in the world" stuff) so touring teams usually liked him. He was definitely an "outer" rather than a "not outer" though. I was at the Lords Centenary Test in 1980 on a rain interrupted Saturday & some frustrated MCC members manhandled Bird as they felt there should have been more play. A mate of mine was in the Lords Tavern after the game & Bird walked in, obviously fancying a pint. There was a bit of a deathly hush, rather like when the bad guy walks into a Western saloon & one man broke the silence & said "Come on Dickie - when was the pitch really fit for play?" Bird put down his pint, looked straight at the man & said "Far as I was concerned lad, t'pitch was never fit for play".
