Playoff Final against QPR 10:38 - May 1 with 1510 viewsportmanking

We've got to treat tomorrow almost like our very own Playoff Final. In August, if we'd been offered a winner-takes-all game at home to an out-of-form 14th place team we'd have jumped at the chance.

I think we've got to go out there and try to stamp our authority on from the off. That means picking a team that allows us to properly play through the lines and control the ball. For me, that means playing Nunez deeper alongside Azor. Nunez looks way more effective with the game in front of him rather than having to press hard and play with the game going on in and around him.

My team:

Walton
Furlong
Dara
Greaves
Davis
Matusiwa
Nunez
Jaden
Mehmeti
Burns
Azon

If the players and squad treat it like how they approached and played the Southampton game then we should be fine. They’ll be fully aware of how important it is and they won’t need anymore reminding.

If we get an early goal I doubt whether we will seat back. And if we concede early, there’s no need to panic.

We’re have the better team and that should see us through the day.

We can't sit back if we go ahead early. We need to keep our foot on the throttle. Bust your balls for 96 mins and there'll be no need for the *actual* playoffs!

One of the main reasons I am excited for promotion is so we can revamp that midfield room.

Needs some serious work.

I see the logic but think maybe we need Taylor's legs in there if fit – if Madsen starts for them he's combative but not 100% fit so might be ideal to wear them down before picking them off. Would definitely start Mehmeti, yes.

Biggest thing for me is that nobody gets too angsty if we concede first, which has a significantly higher chance of happening than it did vs Exeter or Hudds. Plug in as we did on Tuesday and it'd take a freak afternoon for us not to be ok.

I don't think now is the time for experimentation. Nunez clearly isn't a 10 and I agree with your point, but I can't see McKenna changing anything at this stage. Plenty of food for thought over the summer though, whichever division we're in.

Walton

Furlong
O'Shea
Greaves
Davis

Matusiwa
Taylor (if fit)

McAteer
Mehmeti
Clarke

Hirst or Azon

Burns, Nunez, Philogene, Hirst / Azon off the bench.

Is Nunez in the pivot an 'experimentation'? Most assumed that's where he was destined to play when he signed for us. It just so happened he was more effective in the first half of the season in the 10 as teams gave him too much space to dictate.

The lad came over from Chile to play in the Premier League (and Champions League!) He's one game away from realising that dream. He's going to run through brick walls tomorrow as much as anyone else, surely?

That team is spot on for me.

There are valid concerns about Nunez' 'big game' temperament, given how he was at Nodge and in other big moments since. Don't want to see him red carded after 35 mins.

i think that was a one-off, he won't have 20k people on his back, and every opposition player tag-fouling him.

that said, i'd still start with mehmeti's fresh legs

It would be in the sense he's barely played that role for us at all since he joined.

I don't really care at this stage what he came to us for, every player has their own motivation. Nunez hasn't been good enough in recent weeks, he showed a real lack of maturity at Norwich and he's been poor since IMO. TBH I'm a bit annoyed at him wanting to take the limelight like at Charlton after the game giving it fist pumps, i'd be keeping my head down after that. He needs to concentrate on his game, he can do the panto nonsense when he's earned it.

There's a player in there but we've not seen it for a while now.

Personally I'd play Taylor if fit and Nunez in the 10 as I think he's a better option than Mehmeti.

If Taylor doesn't make it, I'd start Neill

There is also a strong argument not to do that. Don’t get caught up in the tension, try not to feel the pressure that the enormity of the situation brings. When we are on our game, we have enough to beat any team in this league. Having said that we have produced some of our best performances in “big” games, so who knows. I think KM will be doing the opposite of “treat this like a final” approach. He’ll want the same process as normal.

It's an interesting debate because KM spoke about hyping up the derby Vs treating as normal the first time round and we got a big performance and result doing the former.

He's horribly out of form and hasn't looked very good when playing deeper for us, imo. Even when on song he has a tendency to give possession away cheaply at times and that's a lot less dangerous to us when he's high up the pitch than it is when he's sat in alongside Azor.

I think Norwich away was a bit of an (understandable) outlier.

I had similar concerns for the derby at home back in October, and he seemed absolutely fine in that one.

Stick him in front of a passionate home crowd, without 25,000 fans and eleven players doing their best to wind him up and get him sent off, and he'll be fine.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.
