| Last days of the season memories 12:45 - May 1 with 1384 views | gainsboroughblue | Rather uniquely, the last three promotion seasons, we have been in pole position each time but it hasn't always been like that. I'm trying to recall previous years and how often we have jumped up and down positions as the game has progressed. 1998-99 We started the day a point behind Bradford and our goal differences were near identical. They go one down early on, we go 2 up early on and into second we go. All looking good, before Bradford storm into a 3-1 lead and it didn't matter that we were caning Sheff Utd at PR. Wolves pull a goal back v Bradford and then hit the crossbar late on. 1999-00 We started day in 3rd behind City. They went behind at half-time but we were still goalless v Walsall. David Johnson then scored early in the second half and I believe we leapfrogged them.....for about 5 minutes. They went on to cruise it 4-1. From memory, Blackburn hit the woodwork three times before that. 2003-04 Vague memory of this as was over indulging in hospitality area. But I believe we scraped into the top 6 v Cardiff on the last day with a draw so there must have been some choking further up. 2004-05 Level with Wigan going into it, 3rd on GD. They were at home (can't remember who against) and won comfortably, we drew at Brighton. Don't recall any chopping and changing. 2007-08 I was at work for this but seem to recall us having an outside shout for play-offs? We beat Hull and finished 8th but don't recall us sitting inside the top 6 at any stage. 2014-15 I believe we had a Derby collapse to thank for this as we dismally lost at Blackburn. Again, vague memory but assuming we began the day in 6th? Any others, or corrections to my memories? I do remember Brighton away in 1989 in peak transistor radio days, somebody shouting out that Swindon were losing, meaning that we were jumping into the play-off places, only to later learn that were actually winning 3-0. | |

A handful of punks/skinheads came on to the pitch from the lower Cobbold. And yes, sadly recall the “wrong score by radio” incident at Brighton!

| Last days of the season memories on 13:05 - May 1 with 1247 views | TractorJack | That's what was so good about the Huddersfield game. It was never really in doubt at at any point. Leeds went 1-0 down fairly early and even when they equalised we went 1-0 up just after. | | | |

I meant to do 86-87 but forgot. Yep, deffo drew v Reading. Wilson put us ahead. Palace and Plymouth were our only rivals that day and they both lost comfortably so there was no jeopardy at all. The only thing I can recall being worried about was maintaining our record of not conceding a goal at the North Stand end that season. I recall the pitch invasion for Wilson's goal. There seemed to be a tradition of certain faces going in the lower cobbold seats for the last game of the season. Same happened year before v Oxford. [Post edited 1 May 13:10]

A bit like Millwall beating Oxford is considered a given that game was the same. "Derby will beat Reading, no worries". Funny old game. [Post edited 1 May 13:11]

And bizarrely, Millwall were playing for the draw thinking that was all they needed. Leicester won at Watford which kept us out of the top 6. [Post edited 1 May 13:20]

was that just after the Brighton away game when they hadn't won for about 30 matches and of course took the lead. We eventually rescued it 2-1 (Brennan/D'Avray?) Good turn out all squashed up in a terrace corner around the floodlight pylon
| Last days of the season memories on 13:24 - May 1 with 1078 views | Trequartista | 1995-96 Millwall at home. We needed a win to make the play-offs (goals scored > goal difference in those days and we were top scorers of all 4 divisions). It was 0-0. Scowie hit the post and Millwall threw seats. 1998-99 The only way of following the Bradford score was trying to view footage of the game from the executive box tv screens. The Wolves goal was replayed several times resulting in false celebrations of them going 2 or 3 goals up. | |

| Last days of the season memories on 13:33 - May 1 with 1006 views | Steve_M | I think 07-08 we needed Watford (?) to drop points as well as a win. My memory of 03-04 was that a win would have guaranteed a play-off place but, instead, we made hard work of our match and had to rely on someone else slipping up. Not sure anything quite matches the first two on your list though, sat in a pub at uni watching Paul Simpson hit the bar so late in the match was so frustrating. Damn Rodney Jack a month earlier. After that, there was perhaps a bit less expectation in 2000 although the few minutes after Johno's first goal were fun. | |

Yes I recall that Millwall game - they also needed a win to stay up, so the draw suited neither team, and I certainly remember their fans ripping up the seats. That memory gives added desire to ensure that they don't get promoted this time around! Come on Oxford! Maybe a 0-0 with the Oxford fans taking home a few seats as souvenirs?

As ever, you have a much better memory than I! Love those extended highlights from Anglia TV of that Oxford game. Shame it was all for nothing.

My memory for things 20-30-40 years ago is unparalleled. Ask me something about anything from the last 10 seasons, I would just stare blankly. [Post edited 1 May 14:31]

Nope. I think that was the season before. D'Avray did score but it was 1-0.

I was living in Oz at the time, pre Internet I had to endure that via world service at 4am in the morning. Distinctly remember we fell into the bottom 3 for the first time all season in about the 89th minute (Hans Segers...hmm..) before Mark Stein bailed us out. Exhausting...

I don't want to get sued by Everton so I'll just say it was remarkably convenient for them how Segers had, erm, a bit of a nightmare that day. Must've been on the pop the night before or something.

Along with a handful of morons trying to climb out of the Cobbold to get into the North. The other end of season game I recall was the Sheffield Utd home game where we were 3 or 4 up at HT but needed a result at Wolves. Somebody (possibly Sedgley?) hit the post at Molyneux and the fans who were watching through the windows in the lower Cobbold all leapt in the air causing some very premature and curtailed celebrations!

Found a sports bar but they intended to show Barcelona GP on all screens, Alonso was expected to win. They agreed to show the Brighton game, but no sound. They had a table reserved for us , stuck in a corner, with an unwelcome surprise, the barman was a budgie and wearing a horrible yellow shirt.
