It’s a nonsense. We’ve just lost one of our greatest ever managers, on the eve of a Premier League season, with a whole new squad to build. I don’t blame Ashton for McKenna leaving, but the myth of him claiming this word, as if us getting £8m when he rocks up at Palace in March will be any kind of “protection” when we’re 8 points off safety and set to lose £100m+.

Ashton could’ve literally written this himself, from The Athletic. What a weird way to open an article, as if that’s the most important thing.

If we get £8m out of this at any point, that will be a right result (given that we've very sadly lost him and that ship has sailed).
If he'd stayed, we'd have had his valuable services. If he'd been pinched, we'd have had £8m. As things stand, he's torn up his contract and we'll get nothing. The worst of all possible worlds. It's really really disappointing.
Assuming that the deal that's been done with Kieran means that we get /some/ form of compensation if he takes a new job within X months, the situation will either be:
(1) Kieran is an honest man, genuinely wants a break, but we end up with none of the £8m; or
(2) He's not been honest about his reasons for leaving, he pops up at a rival club, and we get some form of compensation (maybe £8m, maybe not).

The planet where I understand that he built a squad in 2024 that got us back up to the PL this season at first time of asking.
The planet where I also understand that if you go from the mid table in league 1 to the PL in 2.5 seasons, then your infrastructure on that side of things is always going to be playing catch up.
Like I said, a lot of people don't seem to understand this isn't FIFA and in the real world things don't just generally trend up in a nice linear smooth line.

Think it’s been widely reported that if he “pops up ata rival club” within the next year ITFC are due up to £7m from that rival club.
Think he may take a year out, rest up and then see what’s offered.
Worth remembering too that he had two years left on his contract and could have left for nothing at the end of it. And if the figures were true he’d have been paid up to £10m as part of that contract.
Whether that’s protected or not, or anyone thinks he’s an honest man or not is down to them. I know where my money would be |  |
