Baseball one is 'step up to the plate'.

US horse racing one is 'this will go down to the wire'.

Every pundit seems to ssy these and i dont really think they know where they come from. Its bizarre.

I don't get the wire one. Why is it a wire? Shirley they don't have a wire for a finishing line, that would make a bit of a mess of the horses, wooden tit?

The plate thing I guess is because Americans are all so fat!
