George Hirst > Stoke ๐Ÿ”œ 08:08 - Aug 19 with 2008 viewsdanchances22

@johnpercy
Stoke have agreed a fee of around ยฃ6m with Ipswich for striker George Hirst. Scotland international to undergo medical later on Wednesday. Price will increase on various contingencies #scfc #itfc

A good deal for us.

ยฃ6m seems low for a good championship striker. I would of thought ยฃ10m+ add ons tbh

โ€ฆ.to me.

The original fee quoted looked a bit excessive.

We get a decent fee, they get a decent striker.

George gets to go to Stoke.

Keaton, Kint, McManus, Fenster and Hockney.

I'd agree - a tad low but not insultingly so.

More a need to move some players on from our perspective.

Under priced. 27 year old Centre Forward for a promotion to the Premier League team x2? ยฃ10m of anyoneโ€™s money. I hope the sell ons and add ons are significant because Stoke have a bargain.

Still, a profit is a profit on top of the brilliant contribution heโ€™s made to us in the last few years. Good player who I wish well. I hope he is appreciated for what he did here in years to come.

Its probably because Stoke are going to have to increase his wages to his PL Town contract and to fund that we have to take a hit.
Stoke have probably used our (desperate) need to get some players off the books to get Town to basically fund a portion of the deal.

Maybe just me but i don't think this is a low deal at all.

That's 6M without add on's. Could easily be 8/10 after he scores a few goals/ plays a few games.

If you swapped the clubs around and we were paying this for a Stoke player with his record, I don't think any of us would be calling it close to a low fee.

Ben Johnson off to Stoke on loan as well. Presume we couldnโ€™t shift him permanently due to the big wages.

I would say that's spot on.

Hirst was rumoured to have not been keen on a permanent and I'd expect that to be fully as a result of promotion clauses putting him on a higher wage.

We've been loyal to Burns, Chaplin, Morsy etc, Hirst was due the same and I suspect we've taken the hit to allow Stoke to make the wages work.

Purely speculation of course, but I hope that's been the case.

Hirst was a great servant to this club, some great goals, some hugely important ones.

This team, containing most of the L1 promotion winners and who got us to the PL first time round will forever be etched in my memory!

Just Leif left now, with JT arriving that season.

Centre Forward for a promotion winning team x2 age 27 in this day and age? His goalscoring is about 1 in 3/4 and he brings people into the game. A real team player who is a better than most of what else is out there in the Championship. Iโ€™d say theyโ€™ve got a bargain in this day and age of transfer fee inflation.

Notwithstanding the fact we need to shift bodies out, one would hope that if Hirst and Johnson are being allowed to go, we're close on Embolo and another full-back. BJ may not be PL quality, but he's versatile, and that leaves us with only Furlong, Ouattara, Davis, and O'Shea playing full-back.

Good luck to Hirsty, overall a core part of the promo group, could be frustrating at times but equally delivered when it mattered last season Scum and QPR and a decent bloke who clearly would have loved to stay.

Doubt we'll ever get the add ons as don't see Stoke going up or Hirst scoring 15+ but hey ho.

Poll: How many team changes tonight?

Ok lets say it's 6M rising to 10M with add ons (As Ben Jacobs has reported).

Compare that with the the other big deals in market ...

Will Lankshear was 10M + add ons .. he's 21 and scored the same amount of goals as Hirst last year

Joel Piroe to WHU will be 8M with add ons and loan fee rising to 12M ... he's 27 and two years ago scored 19 in a Championship season.

So all in all, he's gone for a similar amount to Piroe?

Can we really argue with that?

I agree, especially given what we paid for him, and the fact that he was not at the peak of his powers last year.

I think the main factor is just that any team in our position needs to overhaul the squad to such an extent that everyone knows we're desperate sellers. We have to sell, and that's always going to depress the price. We were forced into buying Akpom. Therefore to upgrade our squad it was pretty inevitable that Hirst would be leaving. Every Champ club could just have offered to take him on a loan, and we would have had to take it. So to get a multiple of what we paid for him, and a material amount of money in absolute terms (a decent chunk of the Maeda fee) I think is perfectly decent business.

There don't appear to be too many Champ sides who are going to be splashing ยฃ10m+ on players, especially when they're not doing the whole "resale value" model (Hirst's value is not going to go up like a 21 year old's might).

Yeah, that's about right. I always assumed the ยฃ10m reported was a total package sort of fee and the upfront would be smaller.

Given we're going to paying the difference in PL wages and that is reflected in the price - all good.

He's going to be 28 this coming season, probably the only better deal we would have got is if Wrexham overpaid.
