| Wes Burns to Leicester - make it make sense 16:26 - Aug 29 with 1984 views | ThisIsMyUsername | Just looking at how Leicester did today and I can't help but wonder why Wes would have chosen his three-year deal at a side in League One rather than stay here for a year? If I understood it correctly at the time, he was very much wanted here this season. Doesn't hugely make obvious sense from a financial side either. Would he earn massively more there in three years than he'd have earnt here in one? Perhaps he wanted some longer term stability but why not take one more year first of being in a Premier League squad? He isn't going to get that chance at Leicester. Feels a bit like a repeat of the Hladky situation in some ways (except Burns is actually playing games). | |

Just feels like such a step down for a longer contract, especially given the journey he was still a part of here. I'd maybe get it if we hadn't been promoted and he still only had a one year offer.

If that's indeed correct then it makes sense obviously. Could see it being so given the level of recruitment being done now, plus his injury history. [Post edited 29 Aug 16:33]

Having missed such a long spell with injury he might have been reluctant to be a bit part player limited to minutes off the bench here. If that is the case, fair play to him - he goes up in my estimation. In comparison, remember how Richard Wright earned millions... sitting on a bench. What a waste of a career.

And that is no disrespect to either of them who were both brilliant servants to the club. The only strange part about Wes is we actually gave him a new deal in the first place.

I admit that I might be naively assuming he genuinely would have had a role here this season.

I half understand that view, but Burns is a better right winger than McAteer. He's just not worth as much.

Mind you, I doubt that was the reason they chose Leicester, it will have been for money and a long contract. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I reckon he (GON) said nice things to Wes but also that he couldn't guarantee him games (knowing underneath he really wouldn't get any or many minutes if all goes to plan). I reckon Wes knew it as well. Most footballers want to play - not many are happy to be perpetual bench warmers with no games.

Obviously not true. We only have a 25 places in the squad, we wouldn't offer him a new deal if he wasn't going to be part of that. We wouldn't offer him a new deal full stop tbh.

I don't think so - all things equal if both were for I'd rather still have Burns than McAteer, who is still somewhat inexperienced at this level. Burns has much better positioning and I daresay, finishing when it comes to shots at goal

Youre entitled to your view I disagree We made money on him. He was useful during pre season. Imo never a chance he was gonna be part of the 25 man squad. Wish people would view players for their actual talent levels rather than what they once did 3 years ago.

Who is to say McAteer will still be here come the end of the transfer window anyway? In reailtu it would be nice to have an upgrade on him too.

I would have agreed with you before we started making the caliber of signings we have made, he would have no chance unfortunately.
