What have we done to football?! 18:22 - Sep 13 with 2299 viewsjasondozzell

Remember how it used to be before all this?

Now watching a game on TV involves repeated recitations of the rules, lengthy VAR checks, commentators talking more excitedly about 'whether there was contact' than actual play, refs with cameras on their head, endless sideways passing as teams try to wear the other down, impressive physicality but without football ability, endless conversations about refs and decisions in place of actual play, quiet crowds muttering.

Agreed.

And to think some pundits want VAR in the EFL.

It’s not just VAR though. It’s the constant tinkering with rules that seem to be getting increasingly convoluted and subjective. Blatter let the cat out of the bag when he said they wanted the controversy of decisions to provide talking points. It’s all to create talking points to drive (online) audience viewing figures and participation for £$¥€.

In terms of VAR, well fans, players, pundits and journalists are responsible for it. If everyone could simply accept that human error happens then VAR would not be a thing. But most couldn’t and then question a refs integrity and then verbally abuse them throughout the match.

I know it’s fashionable to criticise how modern football is played on the pitch but when one of those Match of the 70s is one, the ball spends most time on the air with players keeping lumps out of one another.

Stadiums are far too quiet and to a certain extent that’s down to ticket prices being far too expensive. But if fans could have behaved themselves during the 70s and 80s then possibly fan culture would not be so sterile.

If I hadn’t been so emotionally attached to the Towen, I couldn’t see myself going to games anymore but the blue and white runs too deep to stop.
My dad stopped going regularly with me when Trevor Francis became the first million pound player. Said money was going to ruin football and I guess he was right in many respects. I bet he wouldn’t have five minutes for modern football if he was still around.
Agree with your post 100%

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

The ball in play rules they’ve introduced this year have been a rare breath of fresh air. There’s much less time wasting now by keepers and at throw ins. The only oddity is for some reason refs are treat throw ins level with the box as corners and giving teams as long as they want to get set. That needs to stop.

On fans behaving themselves, there was loads of trouble. Yet it was tragic events like Hillsborough and Bradford that lead to sterile grounds through no fault of the fans. It’s much better going to a game not having to worry if you’re going to get a kicking though. I don’t think I’d swap that part back.

I most certainly do, going back to the early to mid 60's, though memories of then are a bit hazier than more recent times! I also remember the times when players weren't " coached " to within an inch of their lives. I'd be interested to know how the likes of George Best and others would have got on today. I shudder to think!

I’m sure someone will correct me but I’m pretty sure that the laws being quoted on Sky are unchanged for over 20 years and were introduced in 2003.

If a young George Best had the same or similar lifestyle today (to what he had in the 60s) there’s no way he would be playing in the PL - probably wouldn’t even make it as a professional.

I do agree that players do seem to be over-coached but the levels of personal discipline needed today far outweigh what previous generations of youngest needed to succeed.

Have you tried watching replays of “The Big Match” on ITV4? Was also sh11t but for almost all the opposite reasons you have outlined.

I remember seeing crumbling stadia, awful football played on dreadful pitches and blatant racism although the commentary was usually so banal it could be ignored.

A bit like music and films and other stuff, people tend to think that the football of their youth was far better than what it is nowadays.

Fine but we had the better stadia and pitches from the 90s and football wasn't ruined like this then.

Quite!

Great point re over coaching.

'And a lovely goal from Best! Hang on... They are checking if there was any contact in the build up....VAR have indicated an infringement...'

That’s the point, it all comes back to PL money. In the 35 years prior to 1992 there were maybe 5 new football grounds built, in the 34 years since PL inception there have been approx 45.

Italia 90 made football socially acceptable again, but PL money made the clubs financially viable again and it went from there. A lot of people considered the game ruined with the introduction of Super Sunday and Monday Night football etc, then the CL came along with more money but more TV.

The demand has come from the public, remember that global tv coverage ratio to those who attend matches is likely in the 100s:1 maybe often 1000s:1 and a significant percentage of those will never have attended a live game or watched coverage prior to 2000. To them, this is football, most of us on here are probably in the minority.

Well theres many angles to this. Firstly, the odd modern wasteland of the top 6 teams with their sterile fan experience and money driven world.
Then theres the VAR and rule tinkering which are both seem to have ramped up post about 2018. Players get away with less s*** housery but some are still managing to get away with sly abuse.
Then theres where we fit in, which is maybe not part of the OP direction, sure he has been watching the Manchester derby. We have managed to maintain an upward trajectory, with all the financial bonus from being part of the globally No.1 sport, the Premiership. We have the most talented squad I ever saw at our club. Most of the signings had to wait until after the World Cup because they were at the World Cup! Enciso, Palacios, Diop, Lukic, Maeda. We are now fully committed members, but we are still a community based club. So we will see where the journey takes us, hoping we always maintain our spirit and togetherness.

Maybe in that specific case, but the FA’s annual updates of the laws seem to have been causing chaos for several years. We’ve had changes, u-turns and more changes around handball, challenges at corners, time wasting. And then you get rules only selectively applied and then not applied despite the rules not changing. Remember we had the crackdown on pulling at corners 4 or 5 years ago? I don’t think that lasted beyond the end of September even though the actual laws hadn’t changed. Just arbitrary application because managers complained. It seems a bit of a mess to me.

It's quite simple.

There used to be a referee with the assistance of two linesmen. They made mistakes just like players do and some were better than others.

TV pundits and commentators obsessed in their analysis over whether they got it right or wrong and made a big deal over how costly the errors were. The big mistake they made was to make it seem like there was always a clear right outcome every time. This despite the fact they would often fail to agree what that outcome was.

To get back to it, we would need to remove VAR and trust the on field officials and accept they will sometimes make mistakes. That has to be preferable to what we have now. Goal line technology is the only part that seems to have made any improvement. It is completely black and white and virtually instant with its outcome.

That's because you're watching a reality TV programme, with very bad acting. Keep paying the inflated subscriptions, and you'll get even more of it
