Celtic and Derby Leading Hooper Chase
Celtic and Derby Leading Hooper Chase
Wednesday, 12th May 2010 09:21

Celtic and Derby County are leading the chase for Scunthorpe striker Gary Hooper, according to reports this morning. The Blues, Wigan, Wolves and Coventry are also understood to have been keeping tabs on the £2 million-rated 22-year-old this season.

Bhoys boss Neil Lennon is said to have been to watch the former Grays Athletic man in recent weeks.

At least one striker is very much on Town boss Roy Keane’s summer wish-list with the Blues underperforming in front of goal this season and with the likes of Jon Stead and Pablo Couñago likely to be on their way out of Portman Road over the summer.

Meanwhile, midfielder Carlos Edwards is back in the Caribbean and was at a training session of the Trinidad and Tobago national side in Port of Spain yesterday, although only as an observer.

Would be amazed if Celtic were blowing £2m of their player budget on a player, without even having appointed a new manager for next season.

Problem with Gio is he is on loan at Galatasary and view to permanent deal!
plus could we even afford his wages!
Lambert or Beckford however

As much as i would LOVE to have Gio at the club, we all need to be realistic here and get out of our heads that its never going to happen. He is playing at Galatasary, he is most probably going to go to the world cup and as sad as itis to say, there are plenty of clubs out there who can realistically afford his wages and he would rather go to.

I agree that we def need to get someone with pace upfront. It was a shame that we missed out on Maynard a while ago. I dont think Beckford would be good for us purely because of what he is like! Alot of other clubs wud of gone for him by now but his attitude etc plays a massive part inw hy he is still at leeds.

There are some very fine players in Scandinavia and Holland. They adapt much better - as a rule- than players from other countries. We have reasonable ties with both areas and if we could get someone from FC Twente or Feyenoord or one of the big Stockholm clubs we could be laughing. I plan to meet Fabian in Rotterdam next week, I will certainly ask him about a talented player called Kermit Erasmus ( thin k spelling is correct) he was mooted as a possible Dutch World Cup squad member so must be talented. Feyenoord have first shout as he is currently working with Fab at Excelsior - sometime feeder club to the sleeping giants from the port city.
Hooper IMHO would be terrific.
Nice article in the Guardian today Louise Taylor says Keane is a fine communicator who needs to work on his connection with the players. Also picks Connor W as a star of the future , but we know that don't we.?
Town forever.
PS I will be at the World Cup any other blues based in Jo'burg or Durban? Be great to meet up. Ta Charlie

Celtic also can not afford a stamp to post an offer let alone buy a player just like Rangers so if we want him im pretty sure he would be ours

Agree with utrechtblue, there are certainly some quality players here in Holland that could do a very good job for us. Maybe it's time to revive the old Ipswich/Clogland connection.

Think Hooper would do well at FPR from what I've seen of him this year. Hopefully RK will have a few quality players to talk to in the near future, heaven knows we need quality after some of the performances last season!

Dunno why we don't have a look at one or both of the lads at Swindon. Austin & Paynter. There record speaks for itself. I know a few people might harp on about a certain other old duffer we bought from them but there is no point in living in the past. You don't always get your fingers burnt buying from lower leagues (Jon Walters)

"why not have a look at DJ Cambell"

Apart from the fact he might be in prison soon, you mean?

utrechtblue: I'd have Kermit Erasmus in the side just on his name alone! You're right about Dutch & Scandinavian players. Many young Swedish players on their way out to the big wide world go to a decent Dutch club first, so you may know about some of these too. I'm all for renewing the Dutch connection - after all, that's where it all started: do I really need to spell out the names Muhren & Thyssen on this site? Oh, and say hello to Fab. form ITFC Sweden when you see him. Top man! ITFC legend.

Hooper needed one more goal to be joint leading scorer in the Championship. He has pace and it only 22-years-old. Since signing for Scunthorpe in 2008, he has scored 43 goals in 79 games. Hooper scored more than Chopra this season, and Chopra changed hands for £4M last summer. Hooper has to be worth £2M then surely?!

I agree about Dutch and Scandinavian players. We need to get that scouting network working again, rather than relying on players Keane knows personally.

With all the talk throughout the season about needing to buy a 20-goals-a-season striker, it is interesting to see that only 2 players achieved that mark in the Championship this season: Maynard at Bristol City and Whittingham at Cardiff (both finished with exactly 20 league goals). Hooper was next best on 19, followed by Carroll and Nolan who fired Newcastle to the Premier League with 17 goals apiece.

One player who I'd like to see back at PR is Darren Ambrose. Yes, I know he was less than impressive when he came back on loan last season, but form is temporary and class is permanent. He bagged 15 goals from midfield for an average Palace side this season, who let's not forget are still in administration.

Gio has done very little at Galatasary, so it's not completely beyond the realms of possibility that they will decide against signing him. If he ends up back at Spurs anything could happen and theres nothing wrong with us dreaming. After all, his time here was very positive so he might be happy to come back and try and recapture that form. You never know!

I think £2M is a lot for Hooper. For this amount we can have two quality strikers from League 1.. Let's not forget that we will need 2 strikers if we are to sell Stead, Priskin, Lisbie and Counago. Connor is still too young to be a regular starter. I like the idea of getting trwo of the top scorers in L1 and some more experienced players for the midfield and defence areas. This next season would be a great opportunity to go up - look what we have: coming from Premiership two almost dead financially clubs (Portsmouth and Hull) that need to sell most of their good players to survive and one (Burnley) that was simply not good enough to be promoted in the first place. Comparing with the likes of Newcastle, WBA and Boro last year now is just perfect. Combined with not so strong clubs that are in our league we MUST grab that chance we have!!!
Come on Town!!!

Hooper is great player for his age, and imo at £2, its agreat investment.

Maynard is at the top of my list though, wish we signed him from crewe before he went to BC.

Fair enough Souper Jim, as we are dreaming Ewbanks-Blake, J Scotland both struggled in prem, A Mclean . would have thought 2 mill was too much for Celtic at this time.

At £2m Hooper will be cheap.OK, his contract will be up after next season so after already losing Hayes Williams Scunthorpe will try to get best they can get NOWto start building a new team.

He HAS pace, he scored 19 goals(2 penalties) from 31 Championship starts this season (was injured February-April). He's a new Kevin Phillips in the making.

TEAM Competition GS SB G A SH SG FC FS YC RC
Scunthorpe United 31 4 19 5 49 29 47 32 1 0
Date of birth 26 January 1988 (1988-01-26) (age 22)
Place of birth Loughton, England

You can easily understand why Nigel Glough is after him from this:
Player to watch: Gary HooperThe pacy front man netted twice against The Rams at the start of the season and has provided many defences with problems this season. Read more: http://www.derby.vitalfootball.co.uk/matchprere.asp?a=183930#ixzz0njmXGxC8

£2M seems a lot - but he scores goals. If Celtic are interested then I doubt Derby and Ipswich will struggle to compete.
