McCarthy Set for Town Coaching Role
McCarthy Set for Town Coaching Role
Thursday, 13th Jan 2011 12:50

Paul Jewell is set to appoint his former Bradford City strike partner Sean McCarthy to his Town coaching staff. New manager Jewell takes over at Portman Road today and is meeting his squad this morning.

McCarthy played alongside Jewell at Valley Parade for four seasons in the early nineties, most successfully in 1992/93 when Jewell netted 16 league goals and McCarthy 17.

The 43-year-old Welshman started his career with local club Bridgend Town before joining Swansea City in 1995, where he spent three years before joining Plymouth Argyle for £50,000.

In 1990 McCarthy met up with Jewell when Bradford paid the Pilgrims a fee of £250,000. After top scoring for the Bantams in all four of his seasons at Valley Parade, ex-Town boss Joe Royle was persuaded to take him to then-Premier League Oldham for £500,000 in December 1993.

The six-foot tall frontman and occasional defender spent five years at Boundary Park, during which time he had a short spell on loan at Bristol City, before ending his career with another three-year stint at Plymouth and two years with Exeter. Over his career, McCarthy scored 220 goals in 568 senior starts and 81 sub appearances.

McCarthy’s coaching career has been somewhat low profile up to now, starting with Manstow in Ivybridge, Devon where he worked with their U18s.

A spell on Portsmouth’s staff followed before he became boss at Zamaretto League Premier Division side Truro Town in May 2008, leaving the role in December 2009.

Since then McCarthy had been coaching at schools in the South-West, until the call came from his former team-mate and close friend Jewell earlier this week.

Jewell’s former Bradford, Wigan and Derby assistant Chris Hutchings has also been tipped for a role on the new boss’s Town staff, while newspaper reports at the weekend linked West Ham coach Wally Downes.

Roy Keane’s coaches Tony Loughlan and Ian ‘Charlie’ McParland are expected to be on their way out of the club, while reserves coach Chris Kiwomya, goalkeeping coach Jim Hollman and fitness coaches Antonio Gomez and Simon Thadani could hear whether they are to remain at Town today.

Meanwhile, Manchester United chief executive David Gill was spotted sitting next to his Town counterpart Simon Clegg during last night’s 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final first leg victory over Arsenal at Portman Road.

For a second I thought it meant Mick McCarthy! That would have been a little bit harsh on Roy...

Just says part of coaching staff. Could be the youth team for all we know. Seems a strange one if he's involved in the first team.

We'll see!

Anyone who can handle the cauldron that is Truro Town is welcome in my book.

This David Gill business. What is the significance of that then? Trying to get some of the Martin money back? Are we to become a feeder club? Clegg getting Chief Exec tips... 'Of course, my preferred office chair is a Parker Knoll....'

Let's hope it gets some of our boys anywhere near that standard! Welcome

Good to see we are getting someone who has experience of coaching at a lower level and with young players. We need to get back to improving our own players.

Thats the forwards coach in now get Wally Downes for the defence and keep Kiwomya and fitness coach Gomez. Whatever else we think this is the fittest ITFC have been for a long time and you can hardly blame Gomez for training incident injuries.

I REALLY hope that they keep Antonio Gomez. He has had alot of positive comments made about his work in the past. Very good fitness coach. He wouldnt of worked at the likes of Liverpool and Sunderland if he wasnt good. The players clearly like him.

I like the calm efficiant way that Paul Jewell has come into the club. No promises, no hype, no big names, if he can go about his business quietly and professionally and get the job done we will all be happy. Also hats off to him for not getting involved in last nights game, it allowed Charlie his last hurrah, and mean't that PJ can now come in concertrating fully on the league.
As for Mcarthy a fairly average striker, also seems to be quietly going about his work building up experiance and knowledge, now hopefully ready to make a step up. Rather this than some marquee coach coming in just to let us all down.

Truro City think highly of him but it doesn't say why he left?

Along with the many new players, came a new manager. Sean McCarthy was unveiled as the club's new manager in May of 2008. McCarthy brought with him a wealth of professional experience, as well as his coaching credentials.

In the 2008/09 season, McCarthy made an instant impact, when he led the side to another promotion. This one was not without a fight, and City were pushed all the way to the end by AFC Totton. Finishing top of the table was no easy feat, and the hard work of the players and management made sure City were sitting proudly at the top of the table come the end of the season.

The start of the 2009/10 season is now here. Sitting 2nd in the Southern Premier Division, 2 promotions away from the Conference.

Can the promotions continue? Lets hope so, and with the success on the pitch, the success off the pitch should also continue. With Tiger Commercial (Truro) Ltd taking over commercial matters, the club as a whole will benefit.

I still think PJ should bring in Royle as part of the coaching staff.

@daniel9624 average striker? You couldn't of been around back then. I remember seeing him play and he was very much above average and I think his strike record speaks for itself!.....

you said what i was thinking Wicked, havent seen him play but looking at the stats he is a good goal scorer so hopefully will help to build an attacking team and to work on the confidence of Prisken who could so easily of had more last night....

As a Bradford City fan of many years, including many many unfruitful trips to Portman Road, I can safely say that today I am jealous of of ITFC.

Jewell was a true hero at City, in playing and managerial days and Sean McCarthy was probably one of the best stikers we've ever had - based on the standard of the time (3rd Division) - his effort commitment and finishing ability where second to none at the time - oh and he could handle himself - scored two and got sent off on his City Debut!

Frickin Love these two - and if Chris Hutchings joins as AM also, you'll be well set.

Jewell has been a success whereever he has been setup for success - I think Ipswich is one of those success stories waiting to happen.
