Jewell: All Managers Need an Ollie-day
Jewell: All Managers Need an Ollie-day
Tuesday, 18th Jan 2011 15:13

New Town manager Paul Jewell says he agrees with Blackpool boss Ian Holloway that it's helpful taking time away from management to reflect on your previous roles. The former Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan and Derby manager had two years out of the spotlight after resigning as Derby boss in December 2008, while the man universally known as Ollie had a year without a job having left Leicester in May 2008.

Jewell said: “I heard Ollie talking about that and I think he’s right. Sometimes you can see things more objectively when you’re not right in the middle of it.

“What I’ve tried to do over the last two years is look at myself, what my strengths are, what my weaknesses are, where I can do better if I get another job and, hopefully, maybe instead of counting to 10, I can get to three now rather than flying off the handle.

“I think that’s what Ollie’s saying, but I’ve seen him on the touchline acting like a lunatic, so he soon forgot about that!

“I think that sometimes you have to be honest with yourself and say ‘I made a mistake there’ or ‘I probably could have done that better’. That’s experience and I think all the top managers who have been around a lot longer than I have are always looking to improve.”

Jewell admits he made errors in his last job: “I think I’ve got to forget about Derby, we’ve got to move forward. I certainly made mistakes at Derby, there’s no doubt about that. But the team had five points from 14 games when I went there.

“I’ll hold my hand up, I’m a big enough lad, you take praise and you take criticism. I think Derby’s a great football club but I just get the impression that it’s more stable here. One man calls the shots and that makes it easier rather than having too many people getting involved.”

I'm going to judge him on results and the quality of the football we get to see but i must admit i do like the cut of the mans jib. Quite refreshing.

A week in and already the press conference standard is dropping. This man is ruining our club. I bet we weren't even on SSN today.

Great news that Jewell has reflected and learnt from his mistakes at Derby. Must admit to being concerned by his record there.
