Town Linked With King
Town Linked With King
Thursday, 10th Mar 2011 07:14

Town are reported to be keeping an eye on Coventry City striker Marlon King’s contract situation. The controversial 30-year-old’s deal is up in the summer with talks regarding new terms at the Ricoh Arena said to have stalled.

King, who was sent off in the 1-1 draw between the Sky Blues and Town in Roy Keane’s final Blues away game in January, joined Coventry in September, two months after being released from prison where he had been serving 18 months for sexual assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Prior to his conviction, King had been with Wigan Athletic, who sacked him, having joined them Latics in January 2008, after Paul Jewell had left the Lancastrians.

The Dulwich-born Jamaica international started his career with Barnet, moving on to Gillingham in 2000, during which time he spent another spell in prison, this time for receiving stolen goods.

In December 2003 he joined Nottingham Forest for £950,000, subsequently going on loan to Leeds and Watford. His switch to the Hornets was made permanent for £500,000 in December 2005.

Having come close to joining Fulham, King signed for Wigan for £5 million in January 2008, spending time on loan with Hull and Middlesbrough while with the Latics. Over his career, King has scored 128 goals in 318 starts and 88 sub appearances.

Oh for God's sake, no. I'm all for rehabilitation of offenders but this guy is simply beyond the pail. Don't rate him as a striker, either, and surely we want to be looking at up and coming players rather than aging rejects like him. Sounds more like a Keane type of signing. Is anyone keeping tabs on Craig McKail-Smith?

Linked by who? Some lazy journo seeing the wigan jewell link??? Ok good goal scoring record but dirty on and off the pitch, gets sent off far too often and certainly not one to bring the dressing room together, I for one would re consider my season ticket. I believe too in giving people a chance but this guy has had too many in my opinion!! Still as I say likely to one of a number of lazy links over coming months.

Or Adam Le Fondre?

Just mentioned King to my 12 year old son: "We don't want him Dad, he's a thug".

Please nooooo.
Cant see it happening, jewell has been looking at early to mid 20's so i dont think he will be looking at a 30 year old with a dodgy past. Young and hungry is the way to go.

We all know he's a thug, but he's a damn good player, look at his record at watford. His goalscoring record in the championship is second to none. Question is, do we want someone who could cause trouble?

No chance, won't happen. Although we definitely need to sign strikers in the summer regardless, I would have given Ronan Murray a run in the team as there appears to be little to play for. Shame he's gone to Torquay on loan as I think that promising him a run of four of five games would have enabled Jewell to gauge his ability.

Just what the club doesn't need, an ageing jailbird, if he joins we could lose our large female following in protest

Rayman, King's goal scoring record is not second to none. He has an okay goal scoring record, I can name a LOT of players with a better one than him. He's not that good and I don't want somebody like that representing my football team. I don't think he should be allowed to play football to be honest. I'm also all for giving people who have served their time an opporunity to have a job, but there are millions of people in the country who would die to have the gift that he has as a footaller, and he abuses it. Despite what people say, being a footballer isn't just a job, you are a role model aswell. How the F.A can let somebody like that be play football and have kids see him as a role model is beyond me.

I'm sure he would be a good addition to our attack, but this man is not an "Ipswich" player. We are never so desperate that we need to employ a convicted nasty piece of work.

If he signs and scores a load of goals and takes us to the next level then I wonder how many of you will be moaning then. He has served his time. He is allowed to play football again you know. Half of you were never going to a game again whilst Sheepshanks was in charge, then with BFJ was manager and again when we had Keane in charge. How many of you actually didn't go anymore than went most weeks just because of one of those 3 (change in personal circumstances doesn't count)

Saying all that I don't think he will sign as I think PJ likes to have a good team ethic and I am not sure he fits into that, but he is a good player.

Some of you are so righteous.

rayman: yes, thugs can be good players, but it depends on your values. For me his behaviour on and off the field renders him an unsuitable player for our club, and as Bluelady says he's been given loads of chances. I felt the same when we signed Ben Thatcher (not that he was a particularly good player) - is this the kind of person we want representing our club? I know it's rare to find many footballers with flawless characters, but for me there has to be some sort of judgement about a person's suitability in non-footballing terms. Like you say, what sort of trouble and damage to the club's reputation could he cause off the pitch? Also, we've just had a manager who was a great player but also a thug - and where did that get us?
