Town Closing in On Chopra Signing
Town Closing in On Chopra Signing
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 22:42

Town continue to close in on the signing of Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra. As revealed by TWTD this morning, the 27-year-old was at Portman Road today to talk terms and to undergo a medical.

As of this evening, we understand that the deal is not yet complete but it’s likely that the former Sunderland and Newcastle man will be a Town player before the weekend with negotiations set to resume on Friday when he seems set to put pen to paper.

Town and Cardiff have agreed a £1.5 million fee for the former England U21 international with his agent Kenny Moyes confirming earlier today that his player is “keen” to join the Blues.

Meanwhile, we understand that Town are also continuing to talk to a number of other players regarding moves to Portman Road in addition to Chopra and Ivar Ingimarsson, who was also at the club today. Both chief executive Simon Clegg and manager Paul Jewell have been away from Town this week - Clegg at the Football League AGM in Cyprus - but this hasn't prevented them from continuing discussions with several parties.

Jewell is probably looking to make up to eight signings over the summer as he tries to build a more competitive squad for the season ahead.

It would be nice to see some good players at the club. Would love to see Chopra here but hope it doesn't mean that Wickham is moving on (if Priskin leaves-fine...)
St Ledger would be a good addition to and an out-and-out quality rightback.
Interesting to know what PJ's budget is for players this year.
Could see us making a number of signings in a few days if we pull this off. These 2 players would make other players feel that our club is moving and they will want to join too....

If these two do sign, that really does send out a statement of intent to the rest of the championship, and especially to other players, who as yet are undicided about joining us !

Exciting times. Always had faith that work was going on behind the scenes. Fingers crossed that next time I manage to log on one or more of the deals are done.

It's the "terms" that worry me, if these are still under discussion and he is Cardiff's highest player then this won't be easy. Let's hope for some positive news though, and getting Ingimarsson too would be a big bonus. It's also sets out intent meaning that other players are more likely to sign for us if they see we are serious about being promotion challengers.

This is a copy and paste from Wikipedia taken on the morning of June 10th. There is no talk of him ACTUALLY having signed. Why do people make things up? I do not understand it!!

On 8 June 2011, Cardiff's Championship rivals Ipswich Town put a £1 million bid in for Chopra.[38] However, this bid was rebuffed and a couple of days later, Town increased their bid to £1.5 million, which was accepted and he was at the club on 9 June 2011, and is expected to sign a contract with the club on the 10th June 2011.

Let's not count our chickens.

If the club is intent on bringing in so many new faces won't the management require 'bedding in time' and therefore should we not be a little less expectant regarding the forthcoming season - at least for the first few months?

Anyway, despite no clarification that we have indeed signed anyone as yet, the whole thing feels much more optimistic than this time last season, just hope that leadbitter doesn't come back from his holiday.

Unless Leadbitter has been studying a few videos of Xavi, Silva, Iniesta, Cazorla, etc; a bit of poise and composure - that's where it's at.

You're right Brittaniaman, if Clegg and Jewell have been away this wee, who is going to be showing these guys around and "selling" the club to them?
I can understand the delay in any potential signings if he had Ingimarssen around too but surely we should be pushing the boat out to impress potential new players.
I hope there is a bigger picture to all this and Jewell is out wheeling and dealing. Got to admit being about the success of any deals after reading that.

Really hope these come off, don't know much about Ingimarssen myself but seems to be liked enough by the Reading fans. Nervous day by the computer awaits!

Sindre94 and Gary (posters on page 1) - yes, I am no fan of Clegg - I know it is not his money and that ultimately he is working to ME's instructions, and that I respect and don't hold it against him - but for a CEO I think he has a bl**dy awful public approach. Think on his comments regarding allowing any leeway on the season tickets offer!

But I promise you both this much, I WILL make a statement either way on these potential signings when they happen/don't happen!

OK, Chopra to lose 1.5 stone and Paul 3 stone
Put him on the greyhound track with a Bunny to chase, lock up his credit cards, give goal-scoring benefits (like a long distance view of betting shops and young ladies (say 3 miles))

Then we'll have 25 goals from him and 20 from Connor. That should do it.

I hope we go in for Daggers winger Danny Green too. Only 22-years-old and 13 goals/ 12 assists in League One last season. Yes please!
