Jewell Set to Include Schoolboy in Northampton Squad
Jewell Set to Include Schoolboy in Northampton Squad
Monday, 8th Aug 2011 22:19

Town boss Paul Jewell is set to include academy schoolboy Byron Lawrence in his squad for Tuesday’s Carling Cup first round tie at home to Northampton. The 15-year-old midfielder or striker, who was recruited from non-league Histon's youth set-up, was a regular in the U18s last season.

Lawrence, who was with the Blues U15s at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland a fortnight ago, would become Town's youngest ever first team player if he is involved — which would almost certainly be from the bench - against the Cobblers, beating Connor Wickham, who made his senior bow at 16 years and 11 days.

Town manager Paul Jewell has promised to make changes for the League Two side’s visit but Lawrence’s elevation to the first team squad comes as a surprise.

The Blues boss has already confirmed that academy second-year scholar Cody Cropper will be on the bench, while his Playford Road colleagues Joe Whight and Cormac Burke could also be in the 18.

Meanwhile, Real Zaragoza sources say they're yet to hear anything from Town or anyone else regarding defender Víctor Laguardia, who the Blues have been watching during the Spanish side's UK tour: "We have not received any bid for the player."

If Peters and O'Connor don't get on the bench ahead of a 15 year-old do you think they'll get the message?

Without wishing to sound cynical, such acts seem to add to a players future value.

Hey Byron, the first time you get the ball play it short and safe and the second time you get the ball nutmeg the stupid defender and bend it in the top burner.

Good to hear a story about a 15 year old that does not include the word "Riot".
But more seriously, this is good for the lad good and the club. PJ is a good judge of a player and this tells us and the other youngsters that if the player is good enough then PJ will play him. Can't say fairer than that.

Obviously done something to catch PJ's eye. Happy to have him in the squad and hope he enjoys the match day experience. With luck, we'll see him playing regularly in a Town shirt in the next couple of years.

PJ has to make changes as he's lost so many to call-ups, cup tie etc. He might as well rest the older players ready for Hull on Saturday and go with a second eleven and if that can include some young talent so much the better.

I do agree with others though if he doesn't start with players such as Peters and Hyam etc. they will have serious doubts about their furture with Town.

Good luck to the lad but I do feel sorry for the other reserve team players like Tiofack & Murray if Byron gets on ahead of them. I would also like to see Lavery & Burke get some game time. Whight should get a start at RB, will be good to see him in action.

Ellington is sure to start with either Scotland/Priskin likely to start too.

What type/style of player is Byron?
