Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Saturday, 13th Aug 2011 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed with Town’s 1-0 home defeat to Hull City but just as he wasn’t getting carried away after last week’s 3-0 win at Bristol City, he wasn’t too downcast.

Jewell said: “There weren’t that many chances in the game. They’ve come away from home and done a job on us really.

“They changed their formation and stifled us. We’ve had maybe a chance with Lee Martin, but at home you expect more than just two or three chances.

“It’s disappointing from my point of view, but we weren’t getting carried away last week and we’re not too disappointed this week.”

The Town manager was particularly unhappy with the way his defence was caught out for the goal: “We’ve got the ball on the edge of their box and one ball later it’s in the back of our net. It’s hugely disappointing.

“I said at half-time we’ve got to get used to getting draws. I know that sounds stupid but it’s always win or lose with us, we don’t get enough draws.

“If we don’t win games we’ve got to make sure we’re dogged. We could have been sitting here with four points. We wouldn’t have been happy but at least we would have got something out of the game.

“It was just the type of counter-attacking goal we were talking about last season. Very disappointing.”

Moving on to his continuing attempts to add to his squad, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on whether his central defensive target was Stoke’s Ryan Shotton and revealed the Blues are also awaiting the outcome of a second bid: “As I’ve said before, there are lots of clubs in for the same players. We’ve got two bids in actually and I’m surprised they haven’t come out.

“Premier League teams are waiting to see what they can get in before. It’s a frustrating time and I can’t tell you any more than I told you on Thursday.

“I’ve spoken to lots of managers about players and I wouldn’t like anyone commenting on my players, so I have to respect them.”

The Blues boss confirmed that Liverpool's Daniel Ayala was a target: “We were in for Ayala, he’s obviously going to Norwich, to a Premier League team, so that’s what you’re up against.

"The type of player we’re looking for, all the Championship teams and even some Premier League teams are looking at as well.”

Jewell played down reports that Leeds want to take Tamás Priskin on loan and Ibrahima Sonko’s comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” in a recent tweet: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Hull boss Nigel Pearson said finally winning after two successive home defeats came as a relief: “Absolutely. Before we took the field today, I know we’re only two games in, but there was big pressure

"I was really pleased, not just with the result but how we played was really positive.”

It was Hull's first win at Portman Road in 21 years, and only their second ever.

More creativity needed in the midfield

not enough support for chopra .............give him chances and he will score , playing negative at home doesn't work and 2 left sided defenders is asking for trouble

It was very defensive tactically and while that worked okay in the first half, I would have hoped we would have brought on a second striker earlier in the second half. Why didn't we? Perhaps Jewell didn't have much confidence in the defence with accident-prone Smith and a groggy Delaney at centre back so wanted to protect them? Maybe we don't have a decent second striker, as Ellington didn't look up to much when he came on. Several disappointing performances, notably JET and Martin who created little. Poor Chopra was too isolated. We have to be more positive at home.

Quote" I said at half-time we've got to get used to getting draws"

Wonderful motivation - "You can't win this boys so make sure you don't lose" - no wonder we were luck lustre in the second half"

5 in midfield certainly didnt work this week and whilst it was fairly balanced in the 1st half, their midfield won the contest in the 2nd half.

Cresswell was the standout player for me and as above Chops is only gonna be effective with support. Without, we night as well stuck with Scotland!

Poor Second half performance led to the result.
Kennedy and Smith were VERY poor in the second half. Poor Old Chopra looked like Billy No-Mates at the front.
Well done Hull on a dominant second-half.....

Proof if anymore proof were needed that we need to tighten up in defence. One, or preferably two centre backs and a right back needed. Reckon we could also do with a creative midfielder a la Bullard.

JET being played out of the right rather than behind Chopra may account for his ineffectiveness. Granted players need to be adaptable but we should try to play to their strengths whenever possible.

Anyway, lets not all get too downcast after two league results. As PJ said the side is still a work in progress with more faces likely to be added over the coming days and weeks.

Great (in the Hull FC stand!).

In all seriousness though - thought it was reasonably ok today esp given our 2nd half performance!

Atmosphere was good in the 1st half. Gradually died down as we lost the 2nd.
JET and Kennedy were AWOL, Smith made mistake after mistake. Delaney- good going forward,- terrible defending. Someone else here said Bambi on Ice- that was our central defence today.
As the game came to a close Hull pushed and pushed for a 2nd goal to make the result certain. Feel we got lucky with just 1-0.

Priskin + Chopra is the answer!

Enjoyable first half with some nice football but surely with nine corners somebody should score. We don't seem to have defenders who dominate in the air on corners and set pieces.Carlos Edwards and Cresswell both sound but the two centre backs not good enough I'm afraid. Both left sided.
Midfield woefully short of creativity and energy. Kennedy had a good first half.
Both Martin and JET well off the pace. Chopra is a class act and will scfore goals if given chances which he wasn't. He worked tirelessly ploughing a lone furrow. My concern is Chopra will lose confidence if this continues. Midfielders and centre backs a must i'm afraid. Carson deserves a pat on the back for at least making things happen when he arrived. Second half we didn't turn up and we'll need to be alot better against the saints. Hull good footballing side and that young winger is a star at 19. Could have edged a draw based on first half performance.

50-50 first half, Hull tore us apart in the second.
JET= disappointing. Smith and Delaney were awesomely terrible.

Re. the Priskin comments, how can a striker who has scored just 5 goals in 2 years at Ipswich be the answer? He isn't good in the air, he doesn't have a lot of pace and most of the time he looks fairly disinterested. Not the solution!!

This is going to be one tight league this year, jewell is correct, draws are important in games like this. It isnt being negative, just pragmatic. However saying that, we do need to be a little more aggressive in home games at times. But we are a work in progress i guess and 3 points from first two games keeps us level with leicester and west ham.

“If we don't win games we've got to make sure we're dogged. We could have been sitting here with four points. We wouldn't have been happy but at least we would have got something out of the game."

So, our new aspiration (at the very beginning of a new season) is to be looking for more draws (and even AT HOME!)

Sigh.

And so another season already peters out into mediocrity...

Yawn...

Delaney is awful. Ok, so he might have been less than 100% fit, but he was failing to connect 5 yard passes. He needs to improve fast, because at the moment he looks like a League 1 defender. Smith... well, he's young and under pressure, but he didn't do well at Col U last season, so maybe that tells its own story.

As for JET - he's a striker. Play him up front with Chopra. End of. Really the solution is to sign a right back, freeing up Edwards to play further forward and allowing JET to be played in his natural position.

Still need another 2/3 players and a lot of improvement.

Didn't go to the match but it sounds like it was more of the same. I guess the missing 10k fans are thinking the same as me.
I hear PJ has put a bid in for two more players, can he put in a bid for a new Chief Exec as well. Clegg's performance has been abysmal from start to finish.
Not signing Paul Lambert and getting Keane instead and letting MacAuley go out of contract are his two most egregious errors. I can't see us succeeding with him in charge at PR.

Well Paul if your not dissapointed there is something well and truely wrong AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL we get 8.1 millon for Wickham and end up with a striker coming on who couldnt trap a bag of cement yes i know he was on a free soooo .I thought only 3 players came out with any credit Stockdale,Cresswell and Chopra tried but the service was rubbish as for JET he looked like he had spend the week in Enfield and had got no energy left.

This squad is weaker than we finished with last season! Hull must have been lauughing on the way home to see an away team facing them when they were away!! No height, few tall players cannot head the ball especially Smith, midfield players passing to defenders and putting them under pressure so hoof it goes to little Chopra 2 feet over his head!
This manager is not the answer for us, too negative, he should have been fuming at the error that lead to the soft but well taken goal, and why did we go 26 minutes in second half without an attempt on goal?
Oh dear

Oh and as for Bullard did you hear the Hull fans singing one greedy b8stard there is only one...., if he had played we would have lost by more.
