Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26
Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.
Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.
“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”
The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.
“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.
“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”
Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.
“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.
“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”
Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.
“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

There is a player Captaining England in the World Student Games and they have just beaten Brazil today. He plays for Newport County and his dream is to play League Football. Gary Warren would put all our sh*te defenders to shame. We obviously can't attract any decent defenders from a higher league so why don't we start looking for hungry potential in lower leagues. 100k price tag on his head from Newport, sign him up Jewell he has to be better than anything we've got!!!

this is totally unacceptabe, 12 goals concede in 2 games both of which against promoted sides. If the players are not feeling ashamed then they should be sacked. They should all have their wages stopped this week as punishment. Now lets put a line underneath this and move and make sure it does not happen again.

Keane would never have let his team lose like that, they would have been to scared to go into dressing room at half time! We are weaker than last year and the two best players are on loan. Can you make a loanee club captain? The rest of East Anglia seem to have us beat - Cambridge Utd could have, Northampton show up squad limitations (look where they are in league!!), and then Peterborough who sold their best player for gods sake and still got 7. Dont wish for relegation by the way as look what happened to Plymouth, who may leave the league this year and go the way of Rusgden, Chester etc!

As much as I wanted to turn the TV over, I watched the whole game. Embarrassing was not the word for it. We have all been saying for some time now that we need to get defenders in. Yes there was offside goals but we would still have lost the game even taking those away. Four league games in and we have 3 points and are conceding too many goals. We have no defence and do not use the strikers. OK, it's still early days, but I hope we get this sorted out sooner rather than later or we will be fighting at the wrong end of the table again. Please play better and get 3 points next week, I want my 240 mile round trip for the home game to be worth it. When we play at home like we did today it makes it a very long and totally miserable day. Sort it out PJ

Can't believe what I saw tonight, I play once a week with some lads from work and these lads can defend alot better than what I saw tonight, we need two defenders a cb and rb, o'connor was good at lb last season he is quick which is what we lack defensively, delaney was a good defender last season but 1 man is not enough on his own it takes a team not an individual, maybe a midfielder ( bullard ) as if. This is my opinion anyway.

Glad i was there rather than watching the autopsy on TV and in the end it was gallows humour on the terraces. Simply can't believe how many goals we are leaking including the end of last season. Football really isn't that difficult, just make what you have got function as a unit. I'm going to get slated but at the moment we look relegation fodder, more so than under Keane. Wonder what the season ticket prices will be in Div 3 Can't see us getting anything against Leeds or Blackpool but a win against Coventry at home will be vital.

Before the game most people would think, central defence has no confidence ( or ability) so stick a player just infront to help them out so why was Kennedy on the bench? Did we not win at Bristol when we played that way? 4-1 down at half time so what does PJ do. Bring on Smith who has no confidence what so ever for the 2nd half felt sorry for him. We are desperate for a experienced centre half and a big mother F##ker kick ass one to play along side him, until that happens cannot see us getting many points home or away. You also need fullbacks who can stop crosses coming in and when to tuck in behind to help the centre halfs out. You attack as a team and defend as a team two of our best defenders in the past were Bent and Shefki Kuqi they never let the opp have time on the ball If you play one up front. the wingers and midfield players have to get up and support him and you have to play the ball on the ground.

Can't say i've got any sympathy for Smith Michaeldownunder, his positioning was pi** poor which led to his sending off. I thought Jewell made the right switch bringing him on. Ainsley was having a stinker at Centre back as was Edwards at full back so to bring Smith in, push Ainsley to full back and Edwards into right midfield added up. In hindsight....maybe we should have started this way!

Some of the players aren't fit to wear the shirts. Delaney, Leadbitter, Edwards, Smith are hopeless and I really dont want them to play for ITFC again. Changes are needed immediately. Todays result and performance must never happen again. I feel sorry for Stockdale, Chopra and Jewell today but especially for the fans who spent time and money to watch an overpaid spineless bunch of idiots damage the name and reputation of this club. Some sort of recompense is in order but I'm sure that wont happen. Disgraceful

I do believe we are in trouble! I've got faith that mr pork chops can turn it round but how are we going to attract quality players to ITFC when we perform like that on national television! Time to scour the lower leagues for unknown gems who want to prove theirselves on a bigger stage. Tonight smacks of man u 9-0 yet they were from league 1 last season.....and were relegated the season before ...but now are back..... And thrashed us.....which sucks.

I have seen many inept performances in over 30 years of supporting Ipswich but this was the worst. Ipswich made Peterborough look like Barcelona. Hammerings and displays over the years by Oldham, Port Vale, Man Utd, Chelsea and Norwich to name a few look almost respectable in comparison. I thought David Stockdale was excellent in keeping the score down to less than 10. I still have a good amount faith in PJ but he's had seven months to improve the defence but it now has its softest underbelly in the club's history. Over the last two years its only been blind devotion that keeps me supporting the club.

Mick Mills TAsh - Even Indias cricket team could beat us at football Others talk of the lack of youth coming through. I can tell you, and have done so before. ME is not intersted in the reserve or youth he wants sucecss for 1st team only Why are we not bringing in any quality from Europe? because we have no scouting system.

Tbh, the 3 players PJ has paid money for are ok. Chops and JET 4 goals between them and Cresswell looks very good prospect. The freebies are all flops IMO, Bowyer's legs have gone, ellington not good enough and ingi (good as he is) is finished. loanees look pretty good. other than that we're struggling. I think the rot goes much further than playing personnel though, having an anonymous owner doesn't give the club a public face, for all his faults it was obvious sheepy loved the club and this was translated to the people he employed. You just don't know ME's thoughts on the club and the long term plans he has for sustainable growth. ( its no good and far too simplistic to just say we want to be in the prem). Sheepy lost the plot when his 5 year plan expired. any business needs long term strategies and a realisable business plan, does anyone know what ours is? We seem to be stumbling from one season to the next and eventually it may well implode, if it hasn't already. I think at the last count there are 12 players out of contract next summer.

Maybe we need to go down. We don't play as a team, our owner is a faceless corporate investor and 90% of our fans are spoilt whingers. We're a joke and have been for several years. That said, the officials tonight take incompetence to a new level. Presumably they work in the public sector during the daytime.
