Town Offer Pompey Duo
Town Offer Pompey Duo

TWTD understands that Town skipper Grant Leadbitter and defender Damien Delaney have been offered to Portsmouth during the ongoing negotiations for targeted trio Jason Pearce, Joel Ward and Stephen Henderson. The Blues are continuing to speak to Pompey regarding the three players with Tuesday’s deadline swiftly approaching.

In August, back in Steve Cotterill's time as Portsmouth boss, we revealed that Leadbitter, out of contract in the summer and so far refusing to sign new terms, had been targeted by Pompey but with the Fratton Park club failing to offer an acceptable fee.

Now, with time running out on the 26-year-old’s deal, Ryan Stevenson added to the squad over the weekend and Andy Drury and Luke Hyam making an impression on the first team, Town may well be willing to take a more significant hit on the £2.65 million they paid Sunderland in the summer of 2009.

Delaney, who is also believed to be interesting Crystal Palace, would appear to be unlikely to play regular football if the Blues are successful in landing Pearce.

However, whereas Pearce, Ward and Henderson may ultimately decide that a move to a club more stable than Portsmouth might be best for their careers, the opposite could be the case for Leadbitter and Delaney, particularly if there are other serious options on the table, either now or in the summer.

Town boss Paul Jewell was spotted running the rule over his three targets as Pompey beat Peterborough 3-0 at London Road on Saturday, Pearce netting one of the goals.

Speaking after the game, Pearce said he's not sure what will happen: "It is all out of my hands, all I can do is give 100 per cent for the club. I want to stay but who knows what will happen.

"It is nice to be talked about and wanted but I have to just get on with my job. I'm a Portsmouth player and that is all that matters."

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Danny Collins is reportedly set to join Southampton on loan from Stoke with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

surely not a particularly appealing choice for Leadbitter and Delaney?

Don't forget even with administration, all players get their wages in full. So not a huge risk for them.

We are just making this so much more complicated for ourselves, we are talking about 4 players being involved in one deal, I'm worried we are going to run out of time and will end up with nobody, then we really are in the sh1t.

Collins to Southampton??? I thought that he wanted to be close to the Midlands? I wonder the real reason why he didn't sign for us permanently?

There is no way that Leadboots and Delaney will go to Portsmouth in the state that there in. I certainly wouldn't go.

Big surprise this, we rarely do deals like this!

Always wondered how offering players in exchange to another club works. Does Jewell pull them in at the end of training and say "right lads, you're not good enough so in trying to get new players in from Portsmouth, I'm going to see if they'll take you in exchange", or what?

Cannot for the life of me understand why Delaney or Leadbitter would want to go there. Leadbitter only has 6 months left so even if he doesn't get much game time he hasn't got much time until he can walk away.

Delaney maybe more likely to go but even if we got Pearce he would still be in with a shout of competing for a game, with Sonko out of sorts, and Smith improving but as we saw at Leeds still prone to mistakes.

To be honest this sounds to me that we're not prepared to offer any more cash, so we're offering a couple of our poorer players in, I wouldn't say desperation, but...

As much as i want to happen, i can't see it happening. Hopefully when i get up tomorrow, these 3 would of signed. Fingers crossed!

Can't see Leadbitter agreeing to this. He will be free in the summer and have other options. Delaney has a decent contract at Ipswich that Pompey are unlikely to want to match. Might need to stump up cash to get our targets. Portsmouth will be looking at loan replacements with parent clubs paying a good proportion of the wages rather than expensive cast-offs.

Don't think this will change anything. Portsmouth are apparently not in a position to offer either of them more money than they are on now so no real incentive for either of them to go. (That said, having no money didn't stop Portsmouth spending in the summer...)

Hopefully the cash on offer will be enough to persuade Portsmouth to sell up.

Is this a dream? There were a lot of fans, myself included toying with the idea of shipping Leadbitter to Pompey as part of a deal, rather tongue in cheek, didn't really see this coming!

The opportunity for Grant to partner Norris in the middle of the park could persuade him?

Huh? What? How does this make any sense? Surely Leadbitter and Delaney between them are on higher wages than the three Pompey lads (who are younger and–unlike Leadbitter–didn't come from the PL). Pompey can't increase their wage bill right now. And the switch could hardly be considered a footballing plus for them. I expect this story is absolute nonsense.

will be great news if we can ship off deadbetter as he should not have a future at ITFC contract or no contract.

Garv spot on.
Offering players for players.? Albeit theirs are better! And why would ours go.?
As much as i hate to say it Leadbitter is obviously looking for a lucrative summer move and that is unlikely to be Portsmouth.
Does this show that ME has closed the purse strings on PJ after all we were the 2nd largest spending in the summer and look us at us now.
If ME is refusing to spend and also backing PJ draw your won conclusions.

Garv added 00:12 - Jan 30
Second largest spending club in the summer, really?

bluelady added 00:13 - Jan 30
Maybe its loaning them not giving as they are so short of players? Leadboots would get to play, put himself in shop window for summer and I suspect we pay a proportion of wages? Just an idea?
