Town Again Linked With West Brom Striker Cox
Town Again Linked With West Brom Striker Cox
Wednesday, 18th Apr 2012 00:52

Town, Cardiff and Derby are reported to have made enquiries to West Brom regarding striker Simon Cox in recent weeks, according to a tabloid report. The 24-year-old Irish international, who was targeted by the Blues soon after Paul Jewell took over as manager, is understood to want to leave the Hawthorns in the summer.

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson is believed to be willing to sell the former Swindon man but chairman Jeremy Peace is said to have put a £3 million price tag on his head, the sort of valuation which will almost certainly put off the Blues and most other Championship clubs.

Another striker is likely to be on Town’s summer wish list with a number of potential signings already mentioned with this season still having two games remaining.

Former loanee Ricardo Fuller was linked by one of yesterday’s tabloids, while Sheffield Wednesday’s 6ft 3in-tall 21-year-old ex-Carlisle United frontman Gary Madine was mentioned as a possible Blues target in one of Sunday’s papers.

Meanwhile, another one of today's tabloids claims the Blues and Leeds have shown interest in Millwall midfielder Josh Wright, 22, who is said to be holding talks about signing a new three-year deal with the Lions next week.

No need. A Sunderland reserved we actually want this time I believe will be available. Get him.

Youre thinking of Westwood, and I agree

Wickham won't be coming back anytime soon.

I think Cox is a decent player & would be happy with him in the squad in general, but I don't think he's the type of striker we need for next season. With Chopra, probably Scotland and Murray as our strikers and JET & Martin (& hopefully Murphy) as atfacking midfielders come strikers in the squad, what we need is a centre forward type player. Madine would be a great shout in that respect & I am very pleased to see him linked above. The others mentioned just look like lazy journalists digging up old stories. Madine has impressive me in any footage I've seen; strong, skillful, direct & a finisher. If Sheffield Wednesday don't get up - go for it PJ.

Cox scored 43 goals in 81 games at Swindon before moving to West Brom where he got 10 goals in 62 games, so looks a decent striker.

How come Cox is valued at £3M when Le Fondre (54 goals in 96 games for Rotherham) sold for just £350K? We need to find bargains like the latter rather than pay out big fees to Premier League clubs.

Cox is a very good player. Iv seen him play for Ireland a few times I was always very impressed with his ability and work rate.

He has good feet, strong and is a good finisher. Plus he is not afraid to throw his head in where it hurts. He has a tendancy to drop a bit deep at times but thats a tactical issue. Im sure he would do an excellent job for us.
£3mil is very expensive though. £1.5 - 2.0 would be realistic and fair.
He has premier league exp and International experience. He will definitely be going to Euro 2012 so you will all get a chance to see what he can do!!!

C'mon Ireland!!! C'mon Cox (thats diddnt sound too good)

I think Cox is a good player also, but i dont believe this would be a good signing for town. It will another player dropping down from the premiership on high wages and an ego to go with it. I would much rather see a striker come from the lower leagues or maybe even Ireland (between 19-23) given a chance. There are some jems out there that we just havent found yet. MUST LOOK HARDER.

If he does feature in the Euro's and plays half decent then they will want £3 mill for him.
At the right price a decent signing, however, I really want to see some pace added as well!

@Garv Why would we want Wickham back? Best bit of business I think we could have done was selling him for £8m, personally never really thought he was all that and isn't exactly prolific is he? Not the sort of striker we need, we need someone to put the ball in the net as Scotland isn't going to 'guarantee' you goals and Chopra goes on these dips in form where he makes hitting a barn door look difficult whilst at other times he's a regular on the score sheet, so I don't think he's consistent enough to be our main target man.
Simon Cox, again not sure he's prolific enough so I would love to see Gary Madine (let's hope Sheff Wed don't get promotion which would make signing him a bit easier.) as he certainly fits the bill of a goalscorer, which last night yet again proves is the area of the team we are lacking in the most.

Billy Sharpe will be another Kevin Phillips.

A player who scores goals for many seasons to come that we will say wish the club had managed to sign him.

Don't get me wrong I rate Chopra and think he has had a decent season considering his personal issues. But I feel we need a David Johnson or Marcus Stewart type player who lifts the crowd.

It really has become boring to be a Town fan. Expectations for the first time in a long while are low fore next year, mainly in the hope it will bring unexpected success!

Give Wickham a whole season in championship without injuries (not guaranteed) I think he'll score a decent number. Chopra is again likely to get close to 15 as he has this season even without looking much good, and with Scotland chipping in with another 8 or so, Martin will get a few and JET who I'm confident will get around 12 if not more that would be one hell of a strike-force.

Wickham did score 9 in half a season remember last year and having spent a year in the premier league I think if available we should definitely make a loan bid.

3M is well out of our reach so this is another one we can forget

My girlfriend and all her family are Sheffield Wednesday fans so I have seen a fair bit of Madine. I really rate him, and have said on more than one occasion that he would be a good fit at Ipswich.

Other half's Dad, a ST holder there, isn't as impressed and thinks he will turn into a journey man kicking about the lower leagues.

Garv, I see where you're going with the Wickham thing, although I guess my shout for Madine is equally risky as he's not proven in the Championship, Wickham may have been on his way to proving himself, but think he's a little way to go yet. When I said best piece of business we did, I meant to take £8m for potential was much better than rejecting the bid, he has a poor season then falls off big clubs scouts radar and we get no money at all. Maybe the best thing for him would have been a loan back to us, if only for six months, but in my mind we should move on from him now.

I would like to see Wickham back here, but I thought that the general view was that we should have no more loanees?
I'd have thought that JET provides an example of a better route; that is to say to look at the reserve teams of top Premiership clubs and see if we can sign talented players who can't get in due to foreign signings, etc.

Cox is pointless for us at present, high fee, high wages, when the money is drastically needed in other areas

Over-priced, but the right age and with a decent goalscoring record. Would certainly be a good signing. The better Championship teams have 4 decent strikers to choose from - we have Chopra and Scotland. Whether Scotland leaves or not, I think we need a couple of strikers if we want to challenge for promotion. The trouble is we are lumbered with the likes of Bullard and Ellington for a further season - which will massively restrict our wage budget.

Cox would get a good signing, but at £3 million very inflated price.

Madine would be even better i think, been to a few Wednesday games and Gary Madine 'Goal Machine', as the locals fondly call him, always looks dangerous and knows where the goal is.

YES Gary Madine a great player, I saw him play against Colchester last sat.
He looks a hand full & a decent player. Only 21 a great age!!
I hope he gets Wednesday up 1st then we can sign him!! haha!!

Think Cox is a good player but wouldn't spend £3m on him, we're high up in the league for goals scored so i think if we're going to throw £3m i'd rather it be on a couple of good centre backs and a keeper.
