Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Thursday, 24th May 2012 07:48

Town are looking for ways of improving the Portman Road matchday experience ahead of next season and want to hear fans’ ideas.

What do you want to see before the game? What sights or sounds as the players take to the field? And what about at half-time entertainment?

What’s impressed you elsewhere at other clubs in the UK or abroad, or even at other sports? Add anything you’d like to see introduced at Portman Road below and we’ll pass them on. And yes, they know about winning more matches.

A great atmosphere only comes with the excitment of being in a good position to challenge for promotion. For far too long all we have had to play for is the avoidance of relegation, thankfully we have managed this, but it is not just bad luck that stops us from challenging for promotion and it certainly isn't the atmosphere, the club needs to put together a team that is capable and a group of players that want to play here past the completion of their contracts, if the players don't even want to be at Portman Road when they are paid well to be there, how could we be happy to pay a fortune to watch them under perform with absolutely no reward?

Its easy FILL THE BLOODY GROUND reduce the prices
There is nothing worse than empty stadiums how can you get generate an atmosphere when the nearest person is 4 rows away.
LOWER prices fill the ground and hear the noise increase!!!!!!

Just an idea, but at ice hockey games (ive been to a few) they have an organ that plays the melody for chants etc... it would be interesting to see what affect this could have on a football match. Could it get the crowd more involved? mor vocal? Who knows?

Cheer leaders, scrap the current"sing the blues" and how about a bit of live music at the start - say a marching military band or something else with atmosphere?

The old singing the blues song was the better than the crap new one they are playing now, going back to the old one would be a huge improvement

And screens for replays/leading chants. Move the away fans.
(a drummer/trumpeter could work as well as an organ)

Samba Bands, before game/half time, Penalty shoot outs at half time perhaps inviting Sunday football teams to provide players? Full screen showing first half action or at least up to date scores...just a few ideas off the top of the head...we need to add a bit more raz to the days entertainment...plus we need our own song, it used to be 'keep right on to the end of the road' in the 60's, when we were more famous than Birmingham, perhaps a bit dated now, but had real meaning...a permanent print of the lyrics in the programme would help younger fans to learn and love this...get a local Band to do it in Anthem form, not rock it up? Amen

Talent if not on the field then with some cheerleaders as at C.Pal, an atmosphere as when RK was here, pre-match entertainment-music, dance and waitresses coming through the stands with goodies to recoup any outlay in cost to the club !!!

Well, how about a decent beer and something for the girls to drink, the misses and me both sit in Britannia and the options for her are sh1t wine or nothing, two years ago she had a few girlie drinks but no nuffink!!!

Also while I'm on the soap box why does it take so long to get a flat beer...... Chelsea and Arsenal are grounds we have visited recently and no waiting.... Multiple pumps for pouring flat beer!!!!!

Come on Let's get in the real world......

Bet clegg doesn't wait for his tea and cakes at half time.......

Move the away fans to near the SBR stand. This is ESSENTIAL. The club needs to persuade the Police that all hell isn't going to break loose just because they have to walk another 100 yards further,(most of the people in the Cobbold stand are old anyway! & Town fans are really pretty good) Keep the away fans in for 10 mins after game to stop any potential problems. I have been to away matches and been kept in a few minutes after the game, so why don't we do this. This is the one thing GUARANTEED to improve atmosphere, and it won't cost a penny.

Tannoy in SBR lower cannot be heard. Do not switch the lights on until the ref has blown the half time/final whistle. Put new locks on the ladies loos, they are useless (and some more soap dispensers). Put old Town goals on the screens before the game and 2 big screens in the stadium showing great goals at half time would be good. No music after a goal.
Try 'We Win' by Duff McKagan's Loaded - a brilliant anthemic song to come out to, or if you want something slower 'I Love This Town' by Bon Jovi, and/or My Way

Sorry to comment again on this topic but I it seems there is a good number of us who would like us to have ''My Way'' as the song played before the players come out and over-time when people get used to it - it becoming an anthem that eventually the fans all sing. Like at Liverpool with YNWA the tannoy starts it off and then the fans keep it going. Print the words to '' My Way'' in the back of the programme after just a couple of games regular fans would pick it up easily.

Any Idea how we could submit this to the club? I feel like emailing them but know an email will do no good. Any suggestions ?

cheaper tickets....and young ladies with pom poms and short skirts at half time and Delia Smith's recipe for pies stolen so we can have em, whilst she is tied to an archery board and fans get to shoot at her (footballs) for further halftime entertainment.

and please NO music when we score a goal

I remember in the Royle(?) era that there was a brass band sitting in the corner of the cobbold by the SBR stand. Whether it was the football or the band the atmosphere was better. Bring it back and it could improve the atmosphere as well as making this chant better;

Another thing could be just a drummer. At Reading whenever they get a corner someone bangs the drum and a chant goes up.

Finally get the samba band back from the Norwich game

Some good ideas...particularly;
1) Cash ticket turnstiles, without the price hike
2) U13's free
3) Move away fans to other end of Cobbold
4) If there's going to be music or a club song before kick-off, pick something fans can join in with. My favourite proposal "My Way" in honour of SBR
5) Cross bar challenge half time for a free season ticket, or full refund if you already have one
6) Bigger scoreboard showing highlights.

First thing i would do is move the away supporters nearer the Sir Bobby Robson stand. Really pump the music up with about 20 mins to kick off to get the crowd going and singing so the players can here it in the changing rooms. The half time entertainment has been rubbish for years so i would scrap it. Cheaper tickets is a must with more deals where season ticket holders can buy extra tickets cheap. I went to selhurst park and they had a family day and laid on entertainment outside the ground for the kids. We just need to get that buzz around portman road again.

How about to get the crowd up before each game Chopin's 'Funeral March'?

I have been impressed by the reports of the new Brighton Ground. The whole area around the ground could be better with some cafe type places (why has the old shop lain empty for so long?) Inside as well the eating and drinking experience could be a whole lot better - not everyone wants 3000 calories of pie and chips, there is masses of space on the Britannia side of the ground to do something with.

on a seriouse note though rosseden wrote why not have some sort of on pitch open training for 15 mins, just something simple..... i think it has numerous benefits....
Fans get to see the youngsters and see how they look
Youngsters get to go on pitch infront of 16 to 20k people, they might be a bit more commited to success with us if they feel that buzz?

Now that is a good idea give the lads a real heart racer playing infront of a home crowed!!!

Move away fans nearer north stand Definatly No1 in my book good bit of banter most if not all away fans are up for a chant or two and behave very well on the whole and would bring the noise level higher...no not thumping music but real chants failing that why not have canned chants played through the peakers get people going ....hmmmm might be a bit false though bring back the drummer and trumpet player...

Good song for the crowed to get onto dont mind my way very emotional and rousing but Simon Clegg has to sing it in the middle of the pitch before the kick off... either way something we can all sing to didnt really like "singing the Blues" a bit tamefor me. something along the line of fire starter would be good

And this is a must invest in a screen so we can see the replay of the goals we score most clubs have them and it allows us to cheer twice as long!!!

other than that I think cheaper tickets might work but need to see the boys getting the ball in the onion bag and winning is always a sure fire way to get the crowd back on there feet and the numbers begin to swell...
Love the current music when we score...Mexican wave used to be fun..

speed up the service at the bar really anoying not being able to get a drink at half time sometimes....
