Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Thursday, 24th May 2012 07:48

Town are looking for ways of improving the Portman Road matchday experience ahead of next season and want to hear fans’ ideas.

What do you want to see before the game? What sights or sounds as the players take to the field? And what about at half-time entertainment?

What’s impressed you elsewhere at other clubs in the UK or abroad, or even at other sports? Add anything you’d like to see introduced at Portman Road below and we’ll pass them on. And yes, they know about winning more matches.

I agree with most of the points on here, but just to confirm the following:

1) Cheaper Tickets - will fill the ground. That is when PR is at its best.
2) Cheaper Tickets
3) Free Kids Tickets
4) T-Shirt Gun - I saw it at The Oval last year and it was a really good crack
5) No Goal Music - is it me, or is this a bit embarassing?
6) Big Screen - show classic Town moments. 10 years ago today. 20 years ago today, 30 yars ago today etc could be a theme.
7) Sort the music out. Singin The Blues was OK ten years ago but that was the original version so go back to that or dont come up with some other crap just so we can be like everyone else.
8) Cheaper tickets
9) Kids plucked from the crowd at half time for penalties etc
10) Please dont get a drummer - I will punch them in the face (not really but you know what I mean)

Bee Gees - Night Fever - that was number 1 when we won the FA Cup. Just thought I would say that.

Will be interesting to see if anything changes.

1. Cheaper tickets (£10 for U16s)
2. Cut the showbiz, most of the time it's not great
3. Cut the prematch handshake, lineup, cuddle rubbish, just run out and form up and kick off. Plenty of handshaking and cuddle time after the match.

Club did have it better in the last year of Jim Magilton, many friends who attended matches enjoyed the combination of cheerleadeers with ramped up anthem music before players came out culminating in 'Right here right now' etc. the original singing the blues was sooo much better and hence the atmosphere. Appreciate their is a cost to it all but part of the day is the build up etc.
If the team performs i doubt there will be many empty seats, then we will have some noise and a better day out.

Some music with a beat, something that most know , that we can foot stomp and clap to. Something like "hi ho silver lining"
Away supporters closer to sir bobbies stand
More disadvantaged children's half time matches - the downs syndrome kids did themselves and everyone proud and the away supporters cheered as loud as the rest of us.

Unfortunately it will not change by adding a penalty shoot out, moving the away fans etc most people are turning away because of the manager the only way you will get people in next season is if you drop prices. Would agree with letting schools have cheap tickets we have done it before and hope the kids will sing

You won't fill PR with cheap tickets unless we start to look like we're a top 10 team.

Stop mentioning the Tractor Boys sh*t. We're not tractor boys and we never were.

Walberswick: Absolutely agree!

'Tractor Boys' was a term coined by Sky pundits so that they could have a demeaning but useful short-hand for our club.

It is, in my opinion, both appalling and embarrassing that we should swallow this corporate nonsence - swapping a once-proud heritage for a Sky tagline...

Sigh.

team coming out to own version of 'Traktor' by wretch 32.. and always decent to have a matchday announcer with a great sense of humour.. I'll do it if you like : )

The Tractor Boys nickname came from Town fans on the terraces (at a game against Birmingham circa 1999, then gained prominence when we beat Leeds in the Premier League in 2000), not from Sky.

1.Firstly the club need to reduce ticket prices, including season tickets. This will at least tempt more spectators to attend.

2.Next, the club need to overhaul the way they treat the fans. There needs to be cheaper food and drinks. Staff manning telephone ticket sales need to be more courtious to their customers who are parting with large sums of money when buying season tickets ( yep, not impressed with customer service )

3. Need dramatic upbeat music for when players come on to the pitch. Right here right now was good, but` My Way `a great idea, the whole ground was singing it for Sir Bobby at his memorial.

4.Why not have a kids match at half time? There are loads of local teams with kids from about 7yrs. The crowd would like it and the parents and families would probably buy match tickets. Was disappointed to read that the mascots have to buy their own kits -couldnt the club provide them? Peanuts to them.

5. Away fans closer to SB stand. The bored looking stewards may then have more to do - other than picking on the odd fan with their feet on the seat in front!

6. Keep the pre match huddle - looks like they mean business. Still like the Tractor tag personally, its unique to us.

7. Last but not least, some may remember the silk scarves of the 70`s! Thousands wore them at every game, tied round the wrist. Easy to wave and very effective en masse.

If the club would seriously take on board the ideas given on this site, I think they could regain some respect from the paying fans. For a few years now the club and supporters have been growing further and further apart.

I can't disagree with much on here. The ticket prices are a huge barrier, so much so that because of the price of fuel as well, I haven't been to FPR this season; opting for local away games instead.

The hated music really does detract from my enjoyment of a game. An atmosphere simply cannot build if the crowd are continually drowned out by the PA.

The club also need to take a long hard look at the SBR and find some solution to the awful acoustics. Improve that and much of the rest will follow.

As a Town fan living in Nottingham, the club could take a look at what both Notts teams do with regard to the kids and how they engage on a match day:

1) Notts County have a 'school of the week' who get free tickets to a selected game - not just the kids but parents and siblings too. My son's school added 600 to the gate which makes a big difference. They are also booked out for months with junior half-time matches.

2) Forest have their Super 7 scheme which gives every year 2 child at a school in the City a shirt, photo, trip to a presentation evening with first teamers, free tickets to a match and book of discount vouchers. They also have kids for a quid on a regular basis.

These clubs are building a fan base for their future, something Town seem to be struggling with.

The biggest improvement would be cheaper tickets, but the club could also provied better pre match music as the version of singing the blues we have now is awful. I do like the idea of of playing my way by Frank Sinatra before a match starts a nice thing to do in remembrance of sir bobby.

I'm all for getting more bums on seats at Portman Road however, I feel it may be difficult for the club to now sell match day tickets at a cheaper price due to the season ticket renewals already being underway.

Maybe the club could do some kind of incentive so that if a person comes to say 3 or 4 home games then their 4th or 5th home game is sold to them at a reduced price? Not sure exactly how it would work, whether they would need to keep their ticket stub or whether it would be easier for the details of games attended to be recorded by the ticket office etc but at least those fans who come to a few games a season would feel that the overall price of tickets for the 4 or 5 games has been reduced.

I also agree with the idea of getting school kids involved, give cheap tickets to local schools and maybe they can have a five aside game on the pitch at half time.

Cheaper match day tickets and nothing extra to pay for those turning up on the day. Result bigger crowds, louder noise resulting in more home wins.

Get the "Fatboy Three" to lose some weight.

Ban "Tractor Boys" we're not the Wurzels!

No to cheerleaders. I actually really liked the kids 5 aside football matches.

Play something a bit more uplifting immidately before kick-off. eg that classical one that sometimes gets played at the end of the season. And please stop playing singing the blues immediately before kickoff. It's naff and just stifles any atnmosphere from when the players come out.

Mr Wu (keepy uppy) was good fun at Reading one year

Half time should be a showcase for local talent . Singers, bands, dance groups, gymnasts, acrobats, display teams etc would surely give their eye teeth to have an audience that size to showcase their talents. I remember we had an opera singer a few years back who did nessun dorma and brought the house down by whipping out an ITFC scarf at the climax. Brilliant.
Please please can we have a big screen somewhere so we can see the game on TV and watch highlights at half time. So many other clubs have this. Between the Cobbold and Sir Alf stands seems the most obvious place.
And the cheerleaders back of course. The more the merrier. Maybe ones who can use both their arms and legs at the same time this time around
And get rid of Singing th Blues. Nobody does
And that stupid gladatorial music when the teams come on. Ugh.
And more efficient service at the bars at half time. It just takes ages and some of the staff are so slow it is painful. The club loses money because of this. Very often I just don't bother going

- Stop making it so 'nicey nicey' for away teams. We don't want them to look forward to playing here.

- The PA guy/announcer is awful. He doesn't fire the crowd up at all. When reading the teams out he sounds like he doesn't want to be there.

- Club anthem to whip crowd up. Maybe diff version of STB?

- More use of screens/scoreboards. Players faces on there when team read out.

- Throw free stuff into crowd at H/T

- Healthier food options at kiosks

- Replace old TV's in north stand. They must be 15 years old!!

They should do something in the framework of Sky Sports' 'Take it Like a Fan'.

Get a home fan and an away fan on the pitch for a quiz about both clubs, football in general and general knowledge. Winner each week gets to take a penalty against the sub keeper.

Or even better, get a home fan vs a player who's injured/not in the squad in a quiz.

Definitely got legs, this idea

I know we cannot live in the past but, in my younger days before all-seaters, we used to get there early for a prime spot and be packed in by about 2 o'clock and then exchange songs/banter/insults with adjacent away supporters. So, there was always a cracking atmosphere by kick off. Now, the ground is nearly deserted until 5 minutes before kick off, plus the music is unbearably loud, to drown out any chanting, so what chance creating an atmosphere? The ground evacuation voice is the most annoying ever, Singing the Blues is crass and, even if there was atmosphere, it is killed by the two teams walking out together to polite applause. I know it is not possible to change this but it was so much better when teams ran out in turn to cheers from their own supporters. So, I'm not sure if anything will improve things, given those circumstances - apart from being top of the table, having big crowds and having a great anticipation ahead of the game
