Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Thursday, 24th May 2012 07:48

Town are looking for ways of improving the Portman Road matchday experience ahead of next season and want to hear fans’ ideas.

What do you want to see before the game? What sights or sounds as the players take to the field? And what about at half-time entertainment?

What’s impressed you elsewhere at other clubs in the UK or abroad, or even at other sports? Add anything you’d like to see introduced at Portman Road below and we’ll pass them on. And yes, they know about winning more matches.

1, Cheaper tickets
2, Move away fans to other end of Cobbold Stand
3, Kid mini matches at half time
4, ITFC related music just prior to kick off such as "Hey Jude" "Edward Ebaneezer" and even "Ipswich get that goal".
5, Fans actually shouting and chanting!
Most of us seem to be mainly in agreement but I fear we shall be ignored.

The recurring theme seems tobe of lower ticket prices which makes sense if the ground is fuller there will be a better atmosphere
Really think the Club should pursue the My Way theme pre kick off - I think it was played for 1 or 2 games after the Newcastle game.
The Samba Band that has appeared a couple of times create a fantastic atmosphere.
Some get rid of the Dork with theloud haler outside the SBR
At Brighton all the bars stayed open after the match - showing the late match on TV or the international Rugby - great idea.
Big screen
Co-ordination for the production and display of flags and banners around the ground
Aspalls on draught
Allow Rob Chandler to whip up the crowd pre match - I thnink he has been instructed to tone down and not upset the away fans.
Get rid of Bluey who looks like My little Pony - unless fights with visitng mascot can be arranged
Bands in the park behind the SBR

oh and a winning team!

i have to say that for me it is the restrictions set upon fans that can sometimes defuse a good atmosphere. why not allow flags in to a certain area to create a bi of movement near the sir alf stand?
with regards to a song to sing edward ebeneezer comes to mind???
i definitely think the singing the blues song has had its day and we should stick to songs that can get people going... or maybe instead of a song someone on the tannoy could start a chant??? when we score why doesnt someone get on the tannoy and start a chant for the scoring player??

just a few thoughts ;-)

With regards ticket prices. I have friends and family who cannot attend enough matches to make a season ticket worthwhile. However, they feel matchday tickets are too expensive and so only attend 2 or 3 matches a season when they would like to attend 7 or 8. As we have the technology of season cards and suchlike, it's a shame you can't buy a 12-game mini-season ticket and select in advance the matches you would like it activated for. I guess the problem is that it may tempt full s/t holders to downgrade, but it seems a shame that there are people who want to attend more but aren't sufficiently encouraged to.

get the SUBS involved with the half time entertainment as well as supporters. crossbar challenge, penalty shootout, kicking a ball into a hole again something of competitive interest to everyone

a bigger scoreboard is a very decent shout as well! itfc will make their money back instantly from the better standard adverts they can put on there.

MAKE MORE NOISE EVERYONE. Millwall fans may have a fearsome reputation but hell they made some din last weekend, as have several other away fans. Lets shout the rafters down like the old days.

Anyone ever been to an American sports event in a stadium. If you want to learn anything look there.

But have we not been asked these things before, like what music do you want when we score. the result no music. What happens. Nothing, because the question was loaded.

Rather then ask how to make it better ask why people dont come. Then look to make it better for those that go. Look at your list of people who have bought tickets in the past and contact them as to why they have not bought tickets recently, you have a big database of info. Football is supposed to be entertaining, so entertain us.

Why do I need to arrive early, when my time is precious and all I want to do is watch a match and go home happy afterwards. Why do I need to see anything on the pitch when most people go to the bar or toilet at halftime. You have TV's scattered around the ground have 2 or 3 different feeds. Why sky sports, what is it to me. Old footage, interviews with current and ex players etc. Get BBC radio suffolk involved with half time announcements. and pre and post match. They have loads of stuff from covering games. even play some of your own DVD's.

If the reserves get proper football games soon, show highlights of these matches and youth etc. get kids involved from schools, local community such as the disabled kids at half time.

Mostly everything else already said. Bigger screens, cheaper ticket prices. get a retailer to run the food and bar, someone must be able to do a better job then however it is run at the moment.

think about what you are competing against for our time and money, and when we are there make it worthwhile to us so it feels like money well spent.

From season ticket holders find out what and why they do/ spend their money on before, during and after a game. How many season ticket holders buy a programme, beer, food at a game. How many say I have bought a ticket, and thats it. How many casual fans spend money once at the ground compared to season ticket holders?

Why pay your prices for food and drink when I can bring in my own much cheaper.

Even with all this input will you change anything?

The North Stand died with the redesign, it's history now. We need to move on

• Move the singing area to the South Upper (the largest single tier in the Stadium).
• Have a ticket for the area but not for specific seats.
• Encourage crowd participation in songs before the games like we used to do
• Setup a dedicated website for that area and market it as the dedicated singing area
• Flags and banners for big games

Get FPR rocking again!

The huge response to this topic shows how important this issue is to the overall well being of the club. Well done Phil for raising it, and hopefully the club will sit up and take notice. A lot of the proposals are quick wins requiring little or no investment, so there's no excuse for the club to not act other than apathy.

Definetly move the away fans to the oppisite end of the Cobbold stand . Bring the cheer leaders back, they were nice! Make the goal celebration better! Oh and cheaper tickets! But three out of four wouldn't be bad! Thankyou :) rant over!

I would like to see ticket prices drop considerably along with the price most food, Portman Pie is lovely but too much money!
Something has to be done about the ever-dropping attendance figures so special deals should be more frequent and should be taken off of the price of season tickets as season ticket holders do not get the cheaper prices when special offers are on! COYB!

Just an idea but how about strippers on the pitch before the game and at half time?

MrCool added 12:53 - Apr 27
It's what happens on the pitch that counts.

Improve that and the rest will follow.

NO GOAL MUSIC

BlueVelvet added 13:11 - Apr 27
what happended to the cheer leaders, how about changing the music selection each week, how about more goals for and less against, how about revealing who ME is, how about something for the kids, how about a bonus for season ticket holder attendance, a bit lke player appearance bonuses, same thing for day tickets - if you attend 10 times you get the next free etc, how about a big screen

26_Paz added 13:17 - Apr 27
Perhaps the strippers could do a brief routine when a goal goes in, perhaps season ticket holders could receive free private dances after games?

As usual the ' fans ' in the north stand thinking there the only true town supporters.
They are split down the middle when it comes to singing ie:- I'm not joining in if that half of the stand are singing - kids stuff.
If they also want to moan about the south stand not singing and wanting to be near to the away fans ,why don't they get a season ticket in the south stand and kill two birds with one stone. I sit in the Cobbold stand and can't see why we should up sticks and move, were not the ones moaning unlike the north stand.!!!!!!

1. Get a big screen - almost all away grounds I have been to in the past few years have had one - West Ham, Reading, Sunderland, Chelsea, Arsenal - could easily put it in place of that little scoreboard between Cobbold and SAR stand.
2. Have the PA guy reading out the lineups during the warmups etc but when it comes to 3pm have the mascots do it instead.
3. Allow the PA guy to be more biased towards Ipswich - its a HOME game - went to Reading v Ipswich on NYE and every opportunity (sub/goal/start of half) the guy would make the announcement (eg 10 Chopra on for 14 Scotland) followed by a loud "Come on you Rs!" - really got the crowd going - had a bloke with a drum too to hype the place up, same at Middlesbrough and Sunderland in previous trips there too.
4. Cheaper tickets - 17,000 attendances does nothing for the atmosphere. 17,000 people at £30 per ticket = £510,000 revenue, almost full at 27,000 at 'just' £22 per ticket = £594,000 - gives you more money from tickets (about 16% more just on that rough maths alone), more fans, more money on programmes and drinks too - interestingly an extra £84,000 per matchday x 23 games = £1.93m = extra transfer money, could buy Chopra and Cresswell for that...
5. Cheaper food and drink - bottle of diet coke is £2.40 - that's a joke - I've taken to stopping at the Copdock roundabout Tesco on the way to the game - 5 minutes extra time, only £1.10 tops - saves me £1.30 per game, about £30 over the season - so basically getting myself one free ITFC game per season off it - lost revenue for the club - £1.80 is plenty!!
6. Better music before the game - something more of an 'anthem' than just trotting out the current dross in the charts. Queen We Will Rock You or ACDC or something a bit more lively!
7. Half time - kids penalty shootouts at one end of the ground and crossbar challenge with one of the subs (as they do it anyway) at the other - keeps both ends of the ground interested at half time and encourages fans to get involved.

Just what I'd do - makes us money (which can be spent getting that big screen) and hopefully gets PR rocking like it did when we came 3rd in the days of Bent/Kuqi etc
