Blues Linked With Move for Coventry Defender
Blues Linked With Move for Coventry Defender
Thursday, 10th May 2012 09:37

Town are reported to have made a bid for Coventry City central defender Richard Keogh. The 25-year-old was previously with the Blues as an Academy schoolboy when he was also a Portman Road ballboy.

The Harlow-born 6ft 2in tall defender won the Sky Blues’ 2011/12 Player of the Year - for the second season running - and Players’ Player of the Year awards but couldn’t prevent his side from being relegated to League One. He was also named the official Man of the Match when the Blues won 3-2 at the Ricoh Arena in February.

Several clubs are said to have shown an interest in January and Town may well face competition for the former Republic of Ireland U21 international’s signature. Coventry’s demotion is likely to mean his exit is all but certain.

Keogh, who is contracted until the summer of 2013, moved to Stoke — where he failed to make a senior appearance - after leaving Playford Road and then spent time with Icelandic side Víkingur (loan), Bristol City, Wycombe (loan), Huddersfield (loan), Carlisle (loan) and Cheltenham (loan).

In 2008 he moved to Carlisle on a permanent basis, before joining the Sky Blues for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2010.

Blues boss Paul Jewell has said he wants to add two central defenders to his squad over the summer with Tommy Smith and Damien Delaney currently the only two at the club, Ibrahima Sonko recently having joined Ívar Ingimarsson in being released.

When i saw the headline on sky sports http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7744135/ i thought it was andy from millwall. i thought he looked great against us as a striker/target man. Didnt make it in the PL for Wolves and I didnt think he was good, a bit lightweight, but he proved me wrong against us the other week . probably no chance of prizing him from Millwall now. Him and Trotter would be good !!

Would be a very good signing and fits bill of being able to cover RB too.

To those moaning about relegation, last defender we signed from a relegated club was McAuley

Walberswick - Gareth McAuley???? Wasn't he relegated with Leicester when we got him and now Premier League?

Sky reckons we've made a bid for him, if we have its bound to be a long drawn out saga with him eventually signing elsewhere! He'll either come back because he's got a point to prove or he'll snub us for not giving him a chance when he was a teenager.

Finally linked with a centre back! Wouldn't mind him to be honest!

Well, he was Cov's Player of the year last two seasons - gotta count for something. But all this speculation is only gonna get worse over the next few months, so nothing to get excited about until deals are actually done.

No, not for me. Here's a simple question. If keogh is commanding a fee and Luke Chambers is free...why would we go for keogh when chambers is the same age, forest's skipper and better!?

Doesn't make any logical sense!

We'll face competition from other clubs for any good player - I would be worried if we were the only club looking to sign a particular player. Hopefully Clegg & co can convince him we will be going in the right direction next season and his future would look bright in darker blue.

Two player of the year awards in a struggling side. Coventry's defensive record was still much better than ours despite relegation, plus I bet they spent a longer duration of games defending too. I like the suggestion of Luke Chambers too, at the end of the day we need 2 centre backs so why not go for both??? Unfancy no-nonsense, no big names, no egoes, just solid defenders like these please

There has to be a level that players will actually be pleased to sign for ITFC. PJ hasn't helped with last season.

The skill is picking the good ones out of the bargain bin. Good luck Jewelio.

Huge stack of "Player of the Year" awards (both fan's and player's) throughout his career. Used to be a ball-boy at PR. Scored against Norwich last season. Tall. Young. Plenty of Championship experience (91 consecutive games for Cov).

Sounds perfect.

The first story to get my hopes up. A decent player and a realistic chance of signing him. A bit early in the transfer season though ... if he has an agent keen on extracting the last penny then this could run all summer.

Do I sense a hint of negativity amongst fans on here, we won't get everyone we try for just 'Chill' guys we'll be OK!!

Sounds like exactly what we need from the attached, potential new captain as well if signed???

Everyone calling for Chambers, we have no chance as Premiership clubs are sniffing around him-shame but true!!

I haven't seen him play, but I like the sound of him. If we can get him for a good price then he could be one of the two defenders we need.

I'd probably have him to be honest, but that's more down to our total dirth of Centre Backs with any discernible amount of ability rather than the man's footballing attributes. Maybe being a bit harsh there Tommy Smith actually.

Ideally, i'd have Keogh and have him as a rotation option, whilst someone, perhaps Luke Chambers as Keaneish mentions, comes in and partners Smith, but i don't know if Clegg will be wanting to pay a fee for a player who would be regarded as a back-up.

I've seen him a few times...IMO best ballboy we have ever had at Ipswich...quick feet and always kept his focus and eye on the game!

I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago saying i'd like this lad to sign. Seems they've been reading my posts lol!

I remember people having a go at Hreidarsson for his relegation history when Town signed him. If just on that stat he was our worst ever defender...
