Chambers Returns to Nottingham
Chambers Returns to Nottingham
Wednesday, 4th Jul 2012 08:20

Town target Luke Chambers is understood to have returned home to Nottingham last night having spent much of yesterday at Portman Road with his move to the Blues believed to be close to breaking down. The 26-year-old is thought to be weighing up various alternative options with Leeds and a number of other clubs also said to be interested.

Chambers underwent a medical and took a tour of the ground and training facilities yesterday but talks which continued well into the evening were unable to be concluded.

Blues boss Paul Jewell has Chambers well up his list of summer targets and it would be a huge blow to see the former Northampton man, a free agent since his Forest contract expired at the weekend, move elsewhere.

In addition to weekend links with Leeds, whose takeover is on the verge of being agreed, Chambers has previously been mentioned in connection with West Brom, Wigan and Leicester City.

The last thing we want is to over pay for players wages. I take some people on here would like to see us go down the route of Portsmouth. The deal is still on read this article

For all the get out Clegg n get out Jewell posts which is getting really boring, L.Chambers was offered a 3 year contact £15,000 per week sounds a pretty good deal why should we pay over the odds for any player?

Thanks PaulForest. Good luck for the season.

I remember hearing tell of the sensible and far-sighted ownership of the Cobbolds and feel that Championship football is at a precipice. With FFP and academy systems coming in to stave off financial implosion at many clubs, it would appear that the sensible approach that Clegg has is setting a tone that we're likely to benefit from.

Yes we've failed to sign players over the last couple of seasons, Chambers will also know that. Agents everywhere will, too. Ipswich is not a club that over-pays. That is not through a lack of ambition, but reflects the difference between ITFC's business ambition from those that run the finances and put money in, and the ambition of the fans, whose only responsibility is to buy the odd shirt and watch the odd game- or buy all the shirts and watch all the games.

That difference in ambition is: The club want to stay afloat and competitive in one of the biggest eras of change since Jimmy Hill started the snowball of player power. The fans want to see Man City's international premiership superstars come and beat their plucky boys at PR next year.

For my part, i don't care who knows that we won't gamble too much and pay over the odds as both of those things failed to get the fans what they wanted before. I'd be happy if we stay in the championship for several more years and watch how the FFP plays out. It will hurt many clubs, including ours, but with a 30K seater stadium and a fairly good fanbase, we should be a profitable business that plays football in the way we know and love. We'll do well to have a ten year strategy that sees us in the bottom ten of the Prem and the top ten of the Champ on a regular basis.

What right do we have to demand more?

What we can demand is that the traditions of the club are upheld in terms of playing style and sensible ownership. The playing style under Jewell is showing signs of going in the right direction, and the ownership has also improved, as apparent in these 'failures' to sign players- which should be correctly understood as failures to bow to unrealistic fan/agent pressure.

I'm optimistic that we can stay in the Championship this season and next- we'll see how things change and find our level and continue towards a better (more in keeping with our traditions) playing and ownership style.

The club is a safe bet for good professionals and an exciting prospect for youngsters at the moment.

Imagine if we hadn't had Mr Evans through the crazy years of financial lunacy? He's a saviour of the club we love and is now grounding us with the help and advice of Clegg with a firm base for the impending changes.

I see no reason to panic or throw toys. Relax and enjoy the speculation.

Hello forum, kinda dissapointed by the lack of signings but things will happen.

I dont have any doubts about if he was asking for big money, its not like we cant pay them, ie bowyer, bullard and chops.
There wasnt any news that he even passed the medical either.

Sit tight people the signings will come.

Totalblue, whilst I agree with you on the subject it appears from our reports that the deal is breaking down. I hope we've got it wrong and that report from Nottingham is correct, although it kind of contradicts itself anyway.
I would not want to see us going down the rout of portsmouth, although we nearly did 10 years ago. If the player can't accept a doubling of wages then he's being unreasonable over the deal (or greedy agents more like) but the bigger problem is another player for another critical position lost if he doesn't sign, that's what's upsetting us all!

Why does everyone have an over the top opinion until we know the facts ?
Yesterday it was well done to all at ITFC when the deal looked to be done and today all at ITFC are idiots and what has happened to our club !!!
Wait until he either signs for us or someone else then have a view ,otherwise a lot of posters will end up looking stupid again

I think our inability to sign a goalkeeper has a lot to do with this.

Would you want to come to a team who had:

2 loan keepers and 2 second rate keepers for the whole of last season - yet there still is no replacement lined up
a defence which got ripped apart with ease on several occassions
experienced players leaving the club each year when out of contract

Until the club sorts out the nucleus of the team, we are going to battle to attract anyone here.

Sad days.

According too the local press in nottingham Chambers is still signing with us: he is on a 8 k contract at Notts Forest n we have offered £15-16,000 the deal hasn't collapsed he is most probably gone back up too forest too say goodbyes n tie up any loose ends: I think Ipswich have offered him a brilliant contract doubled his wages tell me how many other championship clubs will b doing that this summer especially with FFP rules: Hopefully he will join even if he doesn't Evans Clegg n Jewell couldn't have done more in my opinion they don't deserve all this criticism this summer n last without anyone nothing the real truth behind whether a player signs or not: if he doesn't sign then move onto another target Ipswich will not be another Leeds Portsmouth or Rangers who pay ridiculous wages they can't afford the club have a wage budget in line with there income if a player doesn't come within that we don't sign them:

I got a friend who is linked to one of the physios and they have said that he didn't pass his medical and Ipswich are stalling because they feel they only want to offer him 2 years rather than three because of his injury.

Ipwich have already signed a player with an injury, they don't want to do the same again.

Could explain why he lost form last season with Forest

If he has been offered £15-16k that is ABSOLUTE MADNESS!!

Probably just a rumour put around by his agent.

buryblue77 yes I can see why people are getting upset as I am too I have supported town for 40 years and we have never had problems getting high class players. I think it is more at the fault of agents than any club or player they have to push the price up and up to make sure they get a good cut.

I can really see in a few years though that town once again being the club to sign for as we will be one of the few clubs not getting penalised for bad financial management. Sadly in the meantime that could mean we lose out which changes if from financial fair play to financial un-fair play. Why bring in a new rule then turn round and say you wont be punished for 3 years it is disgraceful maybe its time for Evans and Clegg to stand up and make a stand I bet if they did many clubs would agree and follow

Forest fan still in peace,

Thread from my fave Forest forum, give you an idea of what we think. To be fair, the comments sticking up for him are from the more reasoned posters on there. (PS Please excuse any 'we're rich' talk, some of our fans are v excitable lol)

Were we expecting Chambers to stay at the local Travelodge to mull things over or go home - some of you really! Its a big decision for a young lad who at the end of the day holds all the aces as a free agent. And if he has failed the medical and/or if he wants more than we are offering (which sounds far too much imo) then well done Town, lucky escape and lets move on to someone else. Personally I rate Keogh more highly and don't want us getting into bidding wars with moneybags clubs over average players.

I genuinely think we are going to see some serious movement from ITFC in the transfer window over the next two weeks and fingers crossed we will bring in some good ambitious players on reasonable contracts. I also think we will be suprised by some of the signings. If not, then I'll rejoin the PJ / Clegg out brigade but I just have a feeling we are doing it the right way for once.

Brockley, if that is true and he didn't pass his medical it would make sense that we are stalling. Presumably in that case there will be a lot of humble pie eaten around Ipswich in the next few days by most of the above posters.
If it's not and we have doubled his wages then if he wants to go elsewhere good luck to the fella but we shouldn't break the bank.

Not concerned about the Forest fans views, look at the stick Norris, Leadbitter and Walters all got but in reality they were good servants to the club (well 2 of them).

Totalblue, I personally think FFP is the biggest load of elitist nonsense ever. It will only serve to benefit the rich clubs and not allow (probably discourage) rich investors to take over smaller ones. Sure, have a penalty system in place, severe penalties for clubs who get themselves into unrealistic debts but to penalise us all is unfair.
Now is the time to be investing before FFP fully kicks in, by taking our current strategy it's very risky, puts us in danger of falling behind other clubs of a similar size if we don't attract the class of player we need in the short term. Relegation could follow, with FFP in place how would we recover?
