Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I have backed PJ for some time, but this is the day I turn on him, it's taken its time. But Ive had it. I can't watch my beloved Ipswich keep losing, it hurts too much!!
For so many years have we suffered from the lack of results, poor football and no f*cking atmosphere at Portman Road. Bringing in Harry will change that.
I wish you all the best in the future Paul, but it didn't work out for you here.
You are a funny man, and a nice bloke. But not the right football manager for Ipswich Town Football club

There is a difference between having patience and simply having enough as a fan, Jewell made mistakes last season, He's been given a chance to get players in and tinker with the team over pre season and he is still failing. It's not only the poor results, it's the manner of it, we have gone in at half time the last 2home games with the score being 0-0 and we've gone 2 behind in the second half of each game at home. Clearly the connection between Jewell and the players is poor because Stale Solbakken and Chris Powell didn't seem to have a problem gearing there players for the second half with the game being deadlock at half time. We're also seeing the downfall of having a young side, many of who haven't coped with this kind of pressure before. Do what is right for the present and future of our club and do not just stay for the sake of your own pride.

Oh dear oh dear. What a mess. The chances are that he won't be here for long but there will be no point celebrating. I cannot trust Marcus Evans to make the right appointment. He is not a football man and his advisors are old school footy folk. We will just get in another old school dinosaur who will bring in old premier league players on big wages who do not give a monkey's about our club.

If he quits, he gets no settlement. If he's sacked he does.
Can we possibly get rid of him but give him JET as his personal butler for a year to save the club some money?

I don't dislike PJ as a fella, seems honest enough, but I think his time is up. Harry to Ipswich, I wish, but can't see him wanting to come up here at his time of life.

Surely there cannot be any Jewellers left out there now?? HE HAS TO GO NOW!!! I think the current situation represents the biggest threat to Town's survival in the second tier of English football. I don't know what the stats are but is he now doing worse than Keane? Very, very dark days. Evans HAS to act NOW. I agree with Tractamatt, I think he knows it is a matter of time now. This business with JET and Chopra on Twitter shows how unhappy the dressing room is, just as the "don't panic Mr Mainwaring" utterings of Chambers is.

I think it's definitely time for Jewell to go. He seems lost, without a plan of how to get us out of this mess, most of which was his own doing. Sorry, you're a nice guy but not a particularly good football manager. We rescued him from the Sky Sports Soccer Saturday studio and I expect him to return there once he leaves the club.

The Redknapp speculation is worrying. I've never really rated him as a manager. He requires far too big a transfer budget to operate successfully and I feel he is tactically limited. He would do a better job than Jewell, but he's not the right fit for this club. At all.

Who played for Southampton under Redknapp? Danny Higginbottom. Coincidence?

I have heard that ME asked Redknapp's opinion on all summer signings which is why some happened and some didn't. That way, if PJ got sacked Redknapp would be happy with all the new signings so it wouldn't be wasted money. Loach - another player Redknapp tried to sign at Spurs... Just saying.

Harry Redknapp will not come to Ipswich - he commutes from Bournemouth. I have a feeling it will be Mick McCarthy and we will have another two years of mediocrity. Sorry, to be miserable but these are miserable times.

As Mick Mills pointed out PJ didn't do the right tinkering, He dismantled the left side partnership of Cresswell and Martin which was effective in an attempt to bring JET, who was ineffective, into the game.
We seem to lack real leadership on and off the park so if there is a better option there could well be a change.

Never mind Harry Redknapp, at the moment I'd take Harry Hill as our next manager.

The one thing we all have to agree on is that if Paul Jewell goes Marcus Evans will appoint who he wants, who he wants to afford and who his mates are we the fans will not have any say and I feel now the olympics are over that the club will be sold to the first half reasonable offer. Of pitch darker times ahead I'm afraid.COYB

what an earth PJ!? danny higginbottom arrived at the close to 2 in the morning.. why even was he in the squad in the first place them!? also, i'd like to ask the question that, WHY is luke hyam suddenly on the bench!? makes no sense to me, and it's beyond a joke. if we lose at barnsley, he HAS to go.

i'd love redknapp, but can i see it happening? i can't, no! but let's be optimistic, REDKNAPP IN!
