Blues Linked With Ebanks-Blake Move
Wednesday, 25th Sep 2013 10:38

Town are set to offer a short-term deal to former Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, according to reports this morning. The 27-year-old, constantly linked with the Blues since his former boss Mick McCarthy took over at Portman Road, is a free agent having left Wolves at the end of last season.

The former Manchester United and Plymouth frontman is close to a return to fitness having suffered a broken leg and ankle ligament damage during Wolves’ 3-2 victory at Birmingham in April.

Town are said to be ready to offer the Cambridge-born striker a contract until January, presumably to give him time to prove his fitness.

Speaking about Ebanks-Blake in June, McCarthy said he expected him to join a Premier League club: “Sylvan I bought from Plymouth and he was fantastic, but I think he might have offers from the Premier League on a free transfer. He ought to have, to be honest.”

Ebanks-Blake’s former Plymouth manager Ian Holloway is believed to have been interested in taking him to Crystal Palace, but with Premier League clubs having recently named their 25-man squads for the first half of the season, the striker would now not be able to play for a top flight side until January.

The 5ft 8in tall former England U21 international was Wolves’ top scorer with 15 goals last season and in total netted 64 goals in 133 starts and 60 sub appearances while at Molineux — top scoring in the Championship twice - having been signed from the Pilgrims for £1.5 million in January 2008.

What a beast! Would totally rip apart defences - come on Mick sign him up!

While I've never been 100% convinced, positive factors around this:

- He knows McCarthy, and McCarthy knows him.
- Proven Championship goalscorer.
- Free transfer (something Evans will LOVE).
- Point to prove, having been released by Wolves.
-Big and strong: would suit McCarthy's style (like it or not!)

= we might as well go for it!

That would be perfect! Only negative points would be is he still good after that injury? (I hope so!), and that it would move Taylor and Marriott down another spot in the pecking order (unless Taylor is considered to be a right mid). This would be good and bad.

SEB Isn't the biggest but he is a natural poacher and that is what we are definately lacking. I would have him instead of Murphy every day of the week. The only concern will be fitness but to come on as an impact Sub for the first few games will be a big plus until he finally works his way to the starting 11.

What a waste of space! Constantly injured (will he even be able to cope at League 2 level after coming back from a sprained ankle/broken leg?) and he only scored 15 goals last season.

He's just a poorer version of Jason Scotland - we could easily get him back on a loan with a view to a permanent!

Worth a try I guess. Could go two ways, the worst case scenario is he becomes the Nathan Ellington for the 2013/14 season.

All those hacks just knew that if they kept linking us with SEB they'd be right in the end.

Ebanks-Blake and Mcgoldrick upfront would do damage.

Not quite sure how he would fit in, presuming McGoldrick is a certain starter. With Ebanks-Blake & McGoldrick up front, there wouldn't be much height, so no point in sending crosses into the box to be gobbled up by 6'2" defenders

Ebanks-Blake never cut it at Prem level with Wolves. Loan move to gain fitness until a (hoped for) big move in January? Sounds like another Reo-Coker

Get him in, low risk, low cost, works for both parties, no brainer

I don't think having 2 short-ish strikers up front would be a problem..Murphy's tall but isn't exactly doing the business in front of goal.

SEB is worth a punt..we desperately need a greedy bugger up front.

sorry, not loan move - but feels like it

In response to that Joker further up this thread, SEB Scored 15 goals in a struggling Wolves side before his injury and scored 25 in the Wolves side that got promoted in 08/09. He wasn't a regular starter in the Prem but he weighed in with goals in the Prem as well. To compare him to Ellington and Scotland is just laughable!

I can't understand any negativity towards this! How many times recently have I read on here recently that we need a 20 goal a season striker? He scored 15 last season with a side that got relegated, that says to me he's more than capable of getting 20 goals a season. Surely he's got be worth a go, he's on a free what's the worst that could happen?

If this is correct and until January its a win win.
A proven scorer at this level and a poacher in the DJ Campbell mould, look how prolific he was for us.
Get him in.

Never in doubt was it only naming 4 recognised strikers and a small squad at the start of the season?
Would welcome this move all day long...

Cannot belive people on here questioning this - get him in !!!
He is a quality player , only 27 years old , be a great asset for us
Localish lad and knows MM well - this is all round good news
Comparing him to Reo Coker and Scotland is ridiculous
Go get him - knows where the net is and is a finisher
