Marriott Hits Hat-Trick And Signs New Deal
Saturday, 7th Dec 2013 22:28

On-loan Town striker Jack Marriott hit a hat-trick for Woking as the Cards beat Halifax Town 4-3 in the Skrill Premier. Marriott, whose spell at the Kingfield Stadium has been extended until January 2nd, has now scored seven goals in five games.

Marriott, who netted in the ninth, 13th and 73rd minutes, tweeted after the game: “Great result at a difficult place to come, always nice to get a hat-trick as well!

Asked about the 19-year-old’s hat-trick after Town’s victory over Huddersfield, boss Mick McCarthy said: “Great. A young kid said to me today when I was signing his autograph ‘When are you going to play Jack Marriott?’. I said when I pick him. I’m delighted, he’s doing well.”

The former academy striker, who you can hear talking about his hat-trick in more depth here, was recently offered new terms with his current deal up at the end of the season and in his post-match Radio Suffolk interview McCarthy confirmed that he had put pen to paper: “He’s signed his new contract.”

The Blues boss, who insisted on including a 24-hour recall when the loan was extended earlier in the week, will catch Marriott in action on Tuesday when the Cards face Kidderminster at home.

Elsewhere, David October played the full 90 minutes for his loan club Histon as they lost 4-1 at home to Stalybridge Celtic in the Skrill North.

Academy second-year scholar Rory Thompson was in action for his loan club Haverhill Rovers as they beat FC Clacton 4-0 at home in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

He'll score in the championship this season I'm sure.

I know everyone doesnt agree but i think it was a great decision to send him out to Woking and as long as we now have the 24hours recall clause i can only see it as a win win situation.

The sooner we tie him down to a long term contract the better. He's a proper goalscorer and could become a vital squad member as he develops. Can't wait to see him in an Ipswich shirt but think sending him out on loan to gain experience makes sense.

Great decision to send him out on loan. Goals will give him confidence and although the level of opposition is poor, it is competitive football!

Doctor_bunsen - did he say how long the contract was?

A word of caution - he is playing three leagues below ours. Aged 19, you would expect him to be playing and scoring at a much higher level if he was going to go on and be a success at this level. Bent, Wickham and Rhodes were already established first team players by the age of 19.

How I see this working out. Recall him in January, give him a chance in a couple of games, if he does well - keep him, if it's clear he needs more game time then loan him out to a league 1/2 team.

@Doctor_Bunsen

Really? How come there's no mention on here? Pretty big news if he has. Did they say how long the contract was or anything??

That's good news if he has signed a contract - he certainly looks too good for that league, you can tell by watching him he has a predatory instinct for goal.

X-ray.... Rhodes never established himself in the ITFC first team.

Mullet - yes, to be fair you are right. He did though play and score for the first team by age 18/19 iirc. My point is that I have watched Town yoofs since the 70s and history says that those who go on to make it at first team level tend to break into the team while they are teenagers. There will be exceptions, but as a truism it holds.

JM is 19 and playing at level 5. While I would love him to be the next big thing for Town, history says it is unlikely.

X-ray..... Times change, only the truly exceptional players seem to make their mark in their teens these days, don't write him off.

You would have written Rhodes off on the same basis.

Marriott in only just 19', plenty of time to make his mark.

The 70 / 80 / 90's are pretty irrelevant, there were far less imports and prem loans around at that time taking up first team opportunities.

Mullet - you make good points.

I liked Rhodes and was disappointed when he was sold. It did create a space for Wickham though, would he have done as well if he was behind Jordan in the pecking order? Not sure. A bad decision by RK to let Rhodes go nonetheless.

Not convinced that we have that many imports in the Champ. Who do Town have?

We also do not have many Prem loanees - Tunnicliffe and now Graham. I suspect the former is on his way out of Man U as he is not good enough. Too early to tell about Graham.

I still hold the view that very few younger players will make it into the first team once they are 19 or older. And even those who do make it, Richards, Bowditch and Westlake are not guaranteed to make a career at this level.

No one expects him to be a world beater, but he will go on to be a useful first team player at the very least. That's all we ask.

Re loanees, las season we had Murphy, McGoldrick and DJ on loan due to the relegation scrap, and they made it more difficult for a teenager to break through.

X-ray.... Just lol at the Rhodes / Wickham comment. I never got the either / or argument, they would have been a fantastic pairing.

Mullet - fair enough

I hope Jack comes good for us. I would though manage fans expectations, there is a big difference between level 5 and level 2.

Take care

He's got great potential and although it's a worry that a lot of pressure could be put on him by people labeling him as the next great academy product, he does look the part when you see his performances for Woking. I know he's in the 5th tier but to be honest I can't remember us sending out a loanee and him having that sort of impact before (even Rhodes contained himself to a goal every other game in the 4th tier!).

Must be doing his confidence the world of good though and toughening him up too. He may have a bit less time and space in the Championship but he'll also get a bit more protection from the refs and better service!

Appreciate sentiments about difference in class between the leagues, but the goals are the same size are they not? Being facetious of course but if he gets chances he will score goals regardless.

I remember similar things being said when Rhodes was scoring hundreds at youth levels, yet the second he got a decent chance, against Cardiff, he took it with aplomb, natural goalscorers will bear fruit given the chance.

such good news for us, remember Rhodes' loan spells never really racked up many goals and look at him now. This can only be good for marriott, great win today!!
