Edwards Would Love to Extend Stay
Friday, 10th Jan 2014 11:05

Skipper Carlos Edwards says he’d love to extend his time at Town beyond the end of his current contract in the summer.

The 35-year-old’s opportunities have been limited this season and he made only his eighth start of the campaign in last week’s 1-1 FA Cup draw with Preston.

Speaking in an interview in Saturday’s match programme, Edwards said: “My contract is up at the end of the season and at the moment, I don’t know what will happen for next year.

“I haven’t spoken to the gaffer about it yet. The most important thing is that we carry on picking up points and stay in the play-off places.

“I’m sure he will talk to me when he feels the time is right. It’s his decision but of course, I’d love to stay here. If I was offered the chance to stay another year here, I’d love it.

“I’ve really enjoyed my career at Ipswich. It’s a great club with a lot of good people here. I feel fit and my legs don’t feel any different to previous years so I certainly want to play on for at least another year, maybe longer.”

Edwards joined the club in the summer of 2009 when the Blues, then managed by his former Sunderland boss Roy Keane, paid the Wearsiders a fee of £1.35 million.

Year extension as a right back.

6 years younger than Ryan Giggs, he could play for at least another couple of years

Would be happy with either a year extension, or a role as player-coach like Lee, but be on the bench more. Need his kind of leadership here!

Keane made plenty of poor signings, but credit where it's due, Edwards has been fantastic for us. A terrific professional and I'm not convinced there is a better right winger at the club. I don't rate him as a right back however, his spell there certainly improved the defensive side of his game and has made him a more rounded player, but his positional sense is awful. I don't think Mick would play him there unless things were really desperate.

Just to add that Edwards and Mings were a terrific partnership against Preston, they work really well together. Mings likes to get forward and Edwards covered him when he was out of position, as well as generally helping the lad out defensively (he's young and has lots still to learn, is going to make errors etc).

I'd like to see them play together again on our right side as I think they showed real promise.

Wouldn't begrudge a year extension. Could be a useful player filling in here and there. Not a starter but a good presence around the place and can still contribute on the pitch too.

Keep him! He's really not that bad I mean compared to Anderson he's like Messi. Well I'm like Messi compared to Anderson!

Would not mind him staying either, he's likely to be needed just for cover tho'

Not sure he will get another contract, but he's been a good servant of the club. Could still do a job on the right wing, as SouperJím says above.

Don't get me wrong he's been great servant to the Club but he's well past his best so I wouldn't want him here any longer. In fact I feel he ought to go out on loan where he could get regular games and then allow MM to get fresh legs in for the future

We need him badly. Great ambassador, pride in the shirt and all round top man. Another year without a doubt !

A great servant to the club, our little group consider he is better than Anderson, and hasn't really had a good run in the side this season unlike Nouble.Still one of the best footballers we have;but Mick seems reluctant to play this type of player regularly.

We also cant understand why Hunty and Taylor have not been given more game time especially at home.We realise that they havn't always been available;but they have been fit some of the time, and are now.

Not sure he will get a new deal but still puts in a good shift. Has great games then awful ones and the great ones are now becoming much less frequent. Seems like a top bloke though!

How anyone can say hes past is best is beyond me.
He was our 3rd best player last season behind Smith and Cressy, got off to a slow start this year but he didnt have a pre season cus of international duty.
Still the best right winger at the club, against Blackburn with him and Hunt on the wings we were more balanced and attack minded than we have been for years and then they got dropped. Baffling how Anderson gets picked ahead of him when we play 4-4-2. Not even in his league

He has been a superb servant of the club, but I think it's time he moved on. At right-back we have Chambers, Hewitt and Veseli. I don't think he really has the pace for wide midfield anymore. In central midfield we have Hyam, Skuse and Tunnicliffe. I would rather see his wages spent elsewhere.

...... anyone who cannot see another useful year in him are not appreciating his usefulness to the squad - which is pretty thread bare anyway, lets face it.
