McCarthy in No Rush to Splash the Cash
Tuesday, 14th Jul 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s not in any rush to spend the £8 million fee AFC Bournemouth paid for left-back Tyrone Mings last month.

McCarthy says owner Marcus Evans will back him in the transfer market but stresses that there’ll be no devil-may-care spending spree.

“If I’ve got the right players that we need [identified] and I can get them, then yes, [Marcus will give me a few quid to spend],” he said. “But he’s not just going to say ‘Here’s eight million quid, let’s go and spend it’.

“Let me tell you, strangely enough, as soon as you do sell somebody for £8 million everybody thinks you’ve got a few quid and every player’s value doubles. We’re not going to be doing that.”

But, having been largely limited to Bosman free transfers and loans since he came to the club as the Blues have sought to comply with the Championship’s Financial Fair Play rules, McCarthy admits it’s nice to have greater latitude as he goes about adding to his squad this summer.

“Yes [it is], but only for the right ones because you can go out and spend a few quid and end up not getting anyone better than you’ve already got that you got for nothing. So we’ll not be rushing out to do it, that’s for sure.”

The Blues boss was at last Tuesday’s Europa League second qualifying round tie between Shamrock Rovers and Progrès Niederkorn from Luxembourg, which the Irish side won 3-0, but says he was there just to watch the game rather than to look at a specific player.

Meanwhile, strikers Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick and centre-half Christophe Berra were back at Playford Road yesterday having been given an additional two weeks off following their international involvement with the Republic of Ireland and Scotland respectively last month.

Town's U18s are in action against Arsenal in a behind-closed-doors friendly this afternoon.

Elsewhere, former midfielder Andy Drury, 31, has joined Vanarama National League Eastleigh having left Luton Town by mutual consent.

Another ex-Blues midfielder, Owen Garvan, 27, is on trial with Championship new boys the MK Dons having been released Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

Sounds sensible, considering we reached the play offs last season only spending £140,000!

A couple of more players won't go amiss tho MM?

Still need a Right Back and Goal Keeper

Still think we could do with four players: a goal keeper, right back, defensive cover and most importantly that attack minded, goal scoring midfielder.

However, I don't think MM will sign a keeper, whilst suspect he will use youth and inexperience as defensive cover. But hopefully he will sign a couple more on fees.

The IpswichStar keep reporting we have a seven figure bid in for an attacking midfielder, anything on this? My trail of thought is that if we are going into the millions it's gotta be someone tried and tested, i can only arrive at Jonny Williams, but that's purely a guess.

Garvan is still only 27!?

We may well already have attack minded midfield players , who is to say that Bishop ,Henshall , the Arsenal lad ,Frazer can't add a new dynamic. We do though need a balance at right back otherwise it will negate who ever we have playing right mid , i.e. they spend more time in their own half due to chambers inability to cross the half way line. Jonny Williams is an injury nightmare and his career has been blighted. One thing is for sure Derby have spent over 10 million in transfer fees and signing on fees. Looks like they are the team to win the league if it all comes together. Bent will score 20 plus ,Ince will get 15 plus a load of assists ,the list goes on for them. Our squad needs to be bigger ,we will suffer right now with injuries to skuske , berra , parr , to name but 3.

Totally agree with jas regarding the positions where we need to make additions. I'm not 100% convinced by either keeper to be honest.

Before the Mings money came in I thought that Greg Halford or Paul McShane would be good freebies as they can play RB and CB, both are better on the ball/going forward than Chambers too so would suit RB, allowing the latter to partner Berra. Brad Smith from Liverpool sounds promising at left back and could allow Parr to play RB. I expect Mick to still be looking for a bargain.

It says alot about the way Mick handles his business that we are unlikely to hear who the 7 figure midfielder is until they have signed. Willliams is a good bet and if injury free would be a perfect addition. His ability to run at people would give us the initiative in games and drive the team forward; he also ticks the work rate box for Mick.

I keep reading promising things about Fraser, Henshall and Maitland-Niles. It would be a real breath of fresh air to have flying wingers with pace and trickery taking on their full back and delivering crosses for our strike force (please put in a shift though lads or Mick won't play you, which is fair enough imo). And IF we keep our 4 strikers then few teams will have better options up top. Between them last season they scored around 70 goals. Murph and Didz would be favourites to start if we play 2 but what a luxury to have Pitman and Sears coming on in the second half.

Can't wait for the new season to start :)

I hope Derby do walk the league - that would squash up 2nd to about 10th probably and give us a far greater chance of finishing runners up and promoted.

Sensible to keep a lid on transferdealings until they are done. And can't help but thinking what a great piece of business the club has made in getting 8 million pound for Mings looking at a few of the other transfers this summer.

Manchester United got 4.5 for Robin van Persie, paid 14.4 for a worldchampion like Bastian Schweinsteiger and got nothing for Tom Cleverly. Aston Villa agreed to sell Dutch captain Fabian Delph for 8 million until the player himself rejected the move. Urugay international Sebastian Coates cost Sunderland 2 million...

8 million is great money for a player who has never even played in the Premier League.

As for big name signings, seem to remember Derby last season. They went second after winning 1-0 against us at Portman Road in January. Then they brought in Bent and Ince and everything collapsed for them.

Money doesn't always buy success and even if I agree that they may look red hot favourites on paper to win the league, I am far from sure they will cruise home with the title or even get promoted.

It only needs pre or early-season injuries to those named, and Derby are back to square one again.

I still say that selling Mings was a step backwards. He didn't need to be sold, and once in the Premier League, players like him are/were our future.
Of course, the money will help with the wage bill, in the short-term. Keeping him in the short-term would also have been helpful, allowing Parr to play RB and the CBs rotated.

itfcserbia added 08:17 - Jul 14
Ryan Taylor would be awesome fullback pair with Parr on the other side. I know he's been hit with injuries last few years, but would be worth a punt as a free agent as I think he would do great at this level.

Seems sensible on the most part, but it's still almost as if he's adopting the free/loans route and as we found out last season, this will only get you so far. The Mings money should now allow Mick scope to sign players that cost a fee. Doesn't mean to say we have to get on a spending spree, because as we found out with Keane and Jewell, spending money doesn't grantee success. It is also a great shame that until Mings was sold our love affair with FFP deemed any sort of fee out of reach for us. Whilst admirable that we have followed it so strictly, seems others haven't and there have been no significant punishments for teams who have flaunted it. Transfer embargoes where teams can still sign players on loan is a joke, for example. Following it so strictly and holding the high moral ground won't win prizes or get us promoted

Everyone bangs on about Derby signing Ince and Bent but they were part of the side that slipped out of the play-offs last season.
Yes, they have made a statement and are rightly one of the favourites for promotion.
But we don't know how Clement will perform as a manager - and big-money signings don't always guarantee promotion.
You can bet everyone will gun for them next season.

Money has not brought either MM or Ipswich major success in the past. I appreciate its exciting to speculate on million pound plus arrivals however I am happy that MM just keeps on working his magic with the cut price market.

After all, we just keep improving!

I do completely agree with DanLyles though. We need the attacking players to earn their place or MM will revert to the workhorses very quickly.

We can't go down the route of bemoaning FFP and the fact that we are following it. The fines can be massive and that money would never be invested into the club. On top of this how do we feel about the clubs that have flounted the rules? I also think it's laughable that we owe the owner 80 million and when he recieves 8 million for a good bit of businesss we all say that's our 8 million to spend as we see fit. MM has some cash and will keep his cards close to his chest and the first thing we will hear about a signing is when he's doing a madical at the earliest. He's dealing with it well, like an old pro, I agree that right back is the main issue, possibly midfield cover or competition for places. Don't agree about goalkeeping moans, I think we have as good as anyone in the league in our 1st and 2nd choices.

Just as well QPR are getting a kickback from Sterling.

They're gonna need all of that 9m to fight the legal case alone....

Agree we have to be careful who we spend money on, but at the same time we do need 3 more players, a goalkeeper. Right back and central mid

Still think Mick is happy with Chambers at right back unfortunately..maybe with a decent right sided midfielder like Fraser ahead of him next season it won't be so obvious that Chambers offers very little going forward.

I'd rather put some of the money available towards keeping Murphy alongside Sears & Pitman..as far as McGoldrick is concerned I don't think he's the player he was 18 months ago (physically or mentally) so would cash in if we could get around 2 - 3 million now rather than lose him for nothing next summer, then bring in an up and coming striker to compliment the other 3.

Would still like to see us bring in the best young players from the Championship & leagues 1/2 on permanent deals rather than premiership loanees.

Dont need a keeper imo, Bart is a good keeper. Creative midfield and rb are priority. JW would be great but I have reservations as he tends to get battered in the championship and is injury prone - not a great combination.

rickw added 11:42 - Jul 14
I agree, Williams is a big gamble to spend money on him with his injury record.
We have several promising young wingers, however we might continue to play 433 now we've added Pitman to compete with the others.

For me I still think we need a right back - Ryan Taylor on a free could be worth a go, his set piece qualities would be a good addition too.

McCarthy has spoken highly of our young full backs Emmanuel and Kenlock, only really the staff at ITFC know how good they are - maybe they're better than Mings and Cresswell and we really don't need to buy another full back!!
