McCarthy: We Were Ruthless at Both Ends
Saturday, 28th Nov 2015 15:40

Town boss Mick McCarthy praised his side’s ruthlessness at both ends of the field after they defeated Charlton 3-0 at The Valley. Daryl Murphy scored twice and Freddie Sears once as the Blues won their fourth successive game on Addicks’ turf.

“I think the difference between the two sides was that we were ruthless in front our goal.” he said.

“We were actually ruthless in front of our own defending it as well because when they did breach it I thought the back four were great today.

“And we had Gerks who made three magnificent saves. I just said to him, ‘Man of the match and we won 3-0’.”

Charlton manager Karel Fraeye said after the match that he didn’t think the scoreline told the whole story of the game with his side ahead in most of the stats, and McCarthy could see where he was coming from.

“I’ve been there myself, I think we should win games and we haven’t,” he said. “I think they’re a difficult outfit to play against.

“They played a diamond, they played it well. The two young lads, Ademola Lookman and Tareiq Holmes-Dennis, the full-back, I thought they were excellent in the game, as was Jordan Cousins. I thought there were some good performances from them, to be honest with you.

“I’d agree with him, I don’t think it does, but then, as I said, the difference was that we were ruthless.

“We’ve got a goalscorer who hadn’t scored for 13 games and he’s now scored six in three. There lies the difference, we’ve put to bed the chances that we’ve created and we did defend well today, I thought we defended really well.”

McCarthy says it was no surprise that eyebrows were being raised after Murphy’s slow start to the season.

“With good reason. When you score 27 last season and then don’t score for 13 games. He came back late from pre-season, he played in the summer with Ireland.

“There was a different challenge when he got back with Freddie Sears, who had been brilliant, and Brett Pitman, who has been excellent.

“I think Brett Pitman has been a big part of him getting back to form because when I put him in I thought he would put a bit of weight off him and maybe he’d get on a couple of flick-ons and the fact that Brett holds it up and sticks it.

“We’ve played slightly different and Murph’s benefited from all those things. What he has also benefited from is our belief in him, our consistency and just keeping him going.”

The Town boss also had praise for Sears: “Their shape, the diamond, if you go chasing it can be difficult to play against and Freddie was just his usual diligent self, staying with the full-back because Holmes-Dennis at left-back is a handful, a good player, I like him. Freddie stuck with him, he just tracked him back.

“And then he caused them all sorts of problems when he was chasing balls down the other end.

“He’s been selfless, he’s been a proper pro. I’m more relieved than he is that he scored his goal because I keep saying ‘Well done Freddie, you’re brilliant, I love what you’re doing’, but he actually wants to score and I’m glad he did. It was a deflection, I think, but it was down to him, it was going in the net.”

McCarthy confirmed that Christophe Berra lost a tooth when caught by a Simon Makienok arm in the second half: “I’ve just heard him in the dressing room on about it, so I think he did. It won’t hurt his looks, it’s all right.”

The Town manager hopes to have Kevin Bru and Larsen Touré available again next week: “Kevin had a tight hamstring and Larsen had a sore groin yesterday. Neither of them were any good today but hopefully will be all right for next week.”

Charlton manager Fraeye felt his side’s performance deserved better and believed there was a foul in the lengthy goalmouth scramble which led to Murphy’s opening goal.

“We started the game today to get three points, I think that was very clear,” he said. “We started very aggressively and tried to get the goal.

“I think today all the statistics are in our favour, except one, and it’s unbelievable that we didn’t score and that they scored three in the game.

“The first goal was very important and I think that the first goal should never have been allowed because there was a clear foul, and then it’s very difficult to defend and I think that was decisive for the game.

“For the second goal and the third goal we don’t look too good ourselves and it was one of those games where things were against us. First, the injury of Johnnie Jackson, who really was the heart of the team last week and losing him was a blow, although I think the team reacted very well.

“And the first goal and then the timing of the second goal was very bad. You can’t get a worse time than just before entering the dressing room.

“And the third goal, there’s no good time for the opposition to get a third goal but I think in the second half we tried to put on some pressure and make some chances but once they got the third it was very, very hard to get a result.”

Not quite sure what the managers saw! Thought we were good and they were poor. No threat until we were 3-0 up and never in any real danger of losing

I feel Gerkin was our MOM today , purely becuase his 3 outstanding saves prevented Charlton getting a foot hold in the game . Had any if their shots gone in, we would have been on the back foot and quite likely have given up a lead yet again.

Thought we controlled the game and they never had much of a threat, apart from the young lad Lookman who impressed me.
Gerks made 3 good saves in the second half and Berra was back to his best. For such a tall physical guy their centre-forward was totally ineffective and looked out of his depth.
Our midfield played well and Douglas is a different player now the shackles are off and he can get forward.
Up front Murph is back to his best and playing more instinctively whereas early season when down on confidence he kept needing an extra touch. Freddie and Pitts did a lot of good things and the third goal was very classy. Nice to win on Sky for a change and lets hope we can continue the good work on friday in front of the cameras again.

Middlesborough, Derby and Brighton all coming up in December so some sterner tests now ahead after a run of weaker sides.

Well I enjoyed my visit to the valley and the beers I am having overnight before going home with a thick head but happy in the morning!! while a 3-0 away win is most welcome I find the comments from Mick about the defence being ruthless alarming as we were ripped apart on several occasions and if not for Gerken( who I have slammed on a regular basis for his indecision which is slowly getting better) pulling off 4 top class saves we would have lost, so for the 1st time ever I give him a well deserved M.O.M.

Great result however I still don't understand the ethos of sitting back and letting a team attack us when we are leading, at 3-0 we should have been dictating the play not them, this is why we surrender leads.Still it's good that we are now beating the poorer sides which we should be. Bring on the Boro.

Pretty much sums this website up in a nutshell this article.

This went live over 2 hours ago, 6 comments before this. We won. No +28 Mick rants.

If we lose, meltdown on here every single time.

One of the funniest website I've ever used.

Comfortable win in the end. They rarely threatened apart from the 2 Vaz Te chances in the last 10 minutes where Gerken made great saves.

Great to see Murphy back in the goals, fantastic third goal, Pitman and Douglas were brilliant in that move. And good to see Sears get a goal again. All in all a very satisfying 3 points, onto next Friday!

Not quite understanding the Charlton managers comments. Agree they started better, but thought we bossed it. We had more shots. We were more ruthless and deserved to win the game. End of really.

Reason for fewer comments is sometimes that people comment more on chat and stay around longer. I personally love this site as I get all the info on my beloved town. I support my team, win lose or draw, and sometimes I am a little frusterated by results and yes, it ruins an evening for me and the other half, but it also feels great when it comes good and we give another team a good kicking!! Obviously I would like it to happen every week, but i want to win the lottery every week too. Sometimes we just have a rant, but still, life goes on.

Currie10, wihlst I share your frustrations, this isn't a twtd, ITFC, footbal or even a sport specific issue. That people respond stronger to losses than defeats is well established and Daniel Kahneman's work on this won him a Nobel Prize in economics.

ps, while frustrating, in the grand scheme of things a multitude of ranting posters isn't so bad. A well respected study in the US by Gordon Dahl found a ten percent increase in domestic violence following "unexpected" losses of (american) football teams

@currie10 sorry but you've not said anything about the match yourself and nor did any of those who agreed with you. Might just be that rolling over a very poor Chalton side in a decent display just isn't worth a whole load of comment. Gerken was excellent and so we're both Murphy and Sears. The 3rd goal was as good as we have scored all season. Happy days but we might back in meltdown next week if we put in an under performance at home again.

No doubt about it things went our way today. Goal 1. Ref failed to spot Tommy pushing one of their blokes in the face as he headed back across the goal. Goal 2. Deflection. Keeper had the ball covered until a defender got his foot in the way. Second half all Charlton and we seemed incapable of keeping the ball and had it not have been for 3 top class saves from Gerks we could well have lost. Never mind 3 points is 3 points.

That's very true commuter - likewise for reviewing establishments people will give bad reviews more than good ones.

Perhaps people could be a little bit more rational in defeat - I was at Forest, got back from the game around 20,00 and the absolute rubbish from people on here was obsurd.

People wanted an attacking side, got it, no credit for that and literally meltdown re the last min goal.

Is Mick going to get much credit today ? No. Many would hate him even if he got us up.

All you can do is beat the team in front of you. We did that with flying colours, Charlton were very poor. They did have a couple of shots in the last 10 mind which gerken did well to save. A clearer indication of our ability will be our performance on Friday

Today I was glad I got sky sky sports half price for the north's!!!

I'll give Mick and TC LOTS of credit today.... Good 11 put out with good shape and far too much for a poor Charlton side ... Whatever the stats say I know what I saw. They didn't want to know for almost an hour and the Gerks and the back 4 all earned their money.

4 excellent stops, but from the off be bossed his area like I've NEVER seen him do before... No discredit to Daryl but Gerks was EASILY MOM today.

Friday night be tougher.....

Not sure what match Fraeye was watching, but Charlton were rubbish. We did what we had to do without ever hitting the heights. Boro will be a different proposition, but we should be up for it.

Nice to see Gerkin pull off a few saves and a good win, don't know what game the charlton boss was watching as apart from the last 10 mins they were poor. A repeat of last years game against boro would be nice.

Love the positivity lol. Let's BE positive, last 4 games, 10 points goals for 12 against 4. Sure there are many teams who would've liked that return from their last 4.

Its usually our players being pulled, tugged. Thought that Smith was simply attempting to get the ball. Praise for Gerken, its lucky that Charlton didn't put him under pressure from crosses
