Smith Signs New Deal Thursday, 28th Jul 2016 14:53
Centre-half Tommy Smith has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract with an option for a further season.
New Zealand international Smith, 26, has been with the Blues since joining the academy as a scholar in the summer of 2006 and broke into the first team two years later.
Great to see loyalty both from the player and the ITFC.
This is a really goods news for our most consistant defender. He may not measure up to our best defenders of the 70s and mid 80's but he is Town through and through and at 26 years of age still has plenty of time to improve as a defender.
I'm sure most Town fans will see this a big positive.
YES!!!!!!! Tommy is our best defender in my opinion and loyalty in modern football is hard to come by. Some of the best news all summer here hopefully this'll scare off anyone trying to get him!
Would like to see Tommy and Webster along side each other that could be the creative, solid cb partnership we've been looking for
Solid....good result. Was ME held upside down to get at his wallet? Whilst you got him there, get some more money to sign further players. Swear there is swarm of moths at IP1 this PM.
Hmmm... Have to say I am under whelmed Tommy Smith isn't a top drawer player and isn't anywhere near a once half fit Kevin Beattie. For those who say Tommy Smith aka Best defender??? You are really having a Giraffe. And are unlikely to ever seen real talented players in the flesh.
What is it with McCarthy He seems obsessed with getting in defenders and dull midfield players
For all the delusioned fans out there will see it as progress But for the ones who actually want us to succeed as a team, it doesn't alter anything one iota...
The only way for us to ever succeed (suck seed) is to ask a Budgerigar
Cats whiskers...what are you wittering on about? Who said he was better than Beattie? And what's all this aka best defender nonsense? People are happy because, out of the current crop of defenders we have or could likely afford, he is the best option.. I'm happy we've got McGoldrick & Bishop. Doesn't mean I think they're better than Mariner & Muhren. Get a grip.
Marking me down doesn't bother me one little bit, I am not one to patronize just to get up marks on here. You are actually just highlighting your own shortcomings with regards to your limited football knowledge
I think you need to remember all of last season It was Two goal Tommy and rarer Berra and the amount of goals this Ipswich side conceded
@cats_whiskers - please give it a rest - if you were that knowledgeable about football you'd be in Mick's seat.
Tommy is our best defender until we see what Webster is made of - fact! More consistent than the others - last season saw the decline of Berra - he is only going to get worse with his age. Chambers is out of position and Knudsen is adjusting!
The majority are happy, he is solid, does a job and has good rapport with the crows. Now, if you knew anything about football, you'd see those things!
Comparing him to Beattie is ridiculous - no he isn't half the player - but then our team isn't half what it was then - TOP 3 of the TOP League year on year and European winners attracting the best players!
@cats-whiskers - you do realise Tommy was our most consistent defender last year whilst playing on his wrong side? I think this is great news - him and Webster will hopefully make a great pairing. And I suspect MM knows more about what makes a good central defender than some Internet troll!
Happy days! Was worried we might lose TS. Like all players, he ideally needs to be played in his best position to bring out the best of him. If we now go and sign the Belgium winger and he manages to reproduce some of this sort of form (see vid below) then things will be looking more rosy than they did a few days ago. Let's hope for 3 points against Barnsley to kick start the campaign, as that will go some way to help lift the mood for some of us doubters! Although promotions are not won or lost on the first day of the season, just ask MK Dons who were top of the league after their first game last season!
