Town Targeting Former Newcastle Defender Taylor
Friday, 20th Jan 2017 10:39

TWTD understands that Town are targeting the signing of former Newcastle United central defender Steven Taylor, who is a free agent having left MLS side the Portland Timbers in December.

Taylor was born in London and raised in Newcastle and came through the ranks at St James’ Park. He went on to make 246 starts and 22 sub appearances for the Magpies, between 2002 and 2016, scoring 15 goals.

The 30-year-old joined Portland Timbers last summer and made nine MLS appearances, scoring once, and also featured for Portland Timbers 2 during his stint in the US.

Capped by England at U16, U17, U20, U21 and B levels, Taylor spent time on loan with Wycombe Wanderers early in his Newcastle career.

Town have so-far made two signings during the January transfer window, striker Kieffer Moore from Forest Green Rovers and free agent right-back Jordan Spence.

Good experience and could replace Berra who in my option needs time out off the team.

Am I right in thinking he's another one who spends more time on the treatment table than the pitch?

average player, good character - good cover at the back.

Can't be described as a journeyman - having played for Newcastle from 2003 to 2016? Mind you - you lot will find a negative in anything.

Lighting, I think it's Ryan Taylor you're thinking of. Steven Taylor is fine at this level. Would be happy to have him.

I'd like this to happen. Thought he was older than 30. If not for injuries early in his career he'd have had a hat full of England caps.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

....when you don't think it could get any worse ...we have smith coming back...Chambers who should be playing at CB and Berra ...so we draft in a player that played reasonably well at some point in his career but spent most of his time injured

UNBELIEVABLE ?....when this sorry saga is over they will be enough material for a play on a comedy of errors...and a TV show .."It shouldn't happen at a football club" ....and a best selling crime novel ..on...How to kill a club and get away with it....forward written by Marcus Evans .....

..at least we will get the club in the papers...in the obituary column

Journeyman? He's played for 2 clubs!

Might be a masterstroke this. Should be a solid championship defender

Nah,I know Ryan Taylor's always injured but i'm fairly certain this guy's spent a lot of time injured over the past few seasons.

Good player, and at 30 should be at his peak for a central defender.
If he is injury free and fit than he would be a great addition.

With Webster and Smith out injured, Chambers nearing the end of his contract and Berra likely on his way we need an experienced player like this.

Past his best and surprised he's only 30 (31 on Monday), probably ok as a squad player though. From Newcastle to Portland Timbers...that probably says a lot!

I think his injury record may not be the best, but he's got great experience and played the majority of those 200 odd games at Newcastle in the Premier League. 30 isn't old, he's clarly fit having played in the MLS and is obviously cover for Webster. Woudln't be surprised if it was a deal to the end of the season with an option for more.

If you need cover, get the best cover you can. Surely this guy has the experience and quality we should all be welcoming to the team?

Good player in his day, Charlie Woods knows him well. Good cover for Webster now and Berra in the summer.

Having lost Webster for the season and Berra being a bit shaky of late and Smith not ready to come back in yet, this would make sense to me to make us a bit more solid at the back.

As cleggo said above, that wont be enough reason to bring him in for loads on here, as I think if someone gave you a battery, there'd be plenty of people managing to find negative at both ends.

As soon as Webster's injury was confirmed, I thought we'd go for another defender.
Taylor's good but so injury prone. But he could be back-up to Berra and Chambers.
Problem is do you gamble on Smith. He'll be back soon but he won't be match fit for a time.
And if he breaks form again, you've only got Digby to cover the other two.
Clearly, though, we need reinforcements up front and in midfield.

DoobDude added 11:15 - Jan 20
Please don't sign him. Injuries have ended his career and he is now slow and immobile. Saw him play in the Premiership last season and it was embarrassing. Trust me this will be a terrible signing.

If we're going to play 3 centre backs then he will needed and a good addition to the squad, he's been in full England squads before, so if Mick can get him back to his best we'll have a very good player for this level

positivity added 11:16 - Jan 20
also if you're going to play 3 at the back more regularly, you need more than chambers, berra and digby (+ smith when fit)

hoppy added 11:19 - Jan 20
In some ways, this seems similar to me to when we brought Matt Elliott in on loan. A bit of experienced stability, probably on a relatively short term basis, and if he does well and if Berra is going to be off in the summer, he's of an age that could see him having another year or two after, a bit like Mowbray as well in that sense.
