McGoldrick Out for a Month Following Horror Challenge
Thursday, 23rd Nov 2017 17:01

Striker David McGoldrick will be out of action for around a month having undergone surgery today on the four-inch gash to his groin he suffered in last night’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

McGoldrick, a former Wednesday loanee, was caught by a high, studs-up boot by Owls skipper Glenn Loovens in the fourth minute of the match with the 34-year-old Dutchman very fortunate not to be shown a card of either colour by referee Keith Stroud.

Ireland striker McGoldrick, 29, had treatment at the time of the tackle but carried on until half-time when he was replaced and made his way to hospital.

"“Didz has had surgery in London this afternoon,” Town physio Matt Byard confirmed to the club site.

""“The wound was cleaned and closed. There is some damage to the abdominal wall and muscle but fortunately it appears to be minimal.

""“There is heavy bruising in the area though and we are looking at a return in around four weeks."

Normally I would say this is a disaster, but not anymore. Dids has been our flair player for a few years now, but with Garner, Waghorn & Celina we now have ample cover for him. So a speedy recovery is in order, but we're far from Doooooooomed!!

It's almost incomprehensible that a referee and assistants can claim not to have had a view between the 4 of them ,of an incident so serious .This official would probably be regarded by many as usually pickilly officious ,and it seems the Referees panel AND those who look back at serious fouls of this nature ' missed ' or unpunished MUST take some action .
The referee and assistants( including the 4 th official ) ought to be called to account for their joint 'gross errors ' ,and both they and Loovens disciplined accordingly. Probably the referee should bo stood down at least ; for if he saw 'nought ' what and why did he see fit to speak with Louvens .
This officiating team are either not up to the job, or did they somehow jointly have a very poor night ?
We like our players , on both sides,to start any game on top form ; it seems the officials didn't !
Both a real shame ,and an error of very real consequence !

I feel sorry for him, and it's amazing he played out the rest of the first half with that injury!

The ref certainly didn't do us any favours by not giving a card for this, not sending the player off near the end when he deserved a second yellow, giving them a penalty and adding on 5 minutes.

Although we only have ourselves to blame for the equaliser, after spurning two chances to keep the ball in the corner, we should have been playing 10 men and 9 at the end.

Suffolkboy. Tbf to the ref he was unsighted. Certainly either the assistant on that side or the 4th official should have seen it. As for the assistant at the other end (and other side of pitch), he could not realistically give a decision.

Jesus, that challenge...

It's exactly why video replay is required in the game, these days. It works wonders for hockey and american football. A minor delay to review during the next stoppage of play is enough (and can be brought up by assistant refs or managers).

Only a month out ........ that could be 8 games and against some very good sides, maybe a chance again for Tydam and Downes to take up Diaz role

didn't cost us the game.. You don't rely on an opponent getting sent off to hang on to a lead

The officials were on a different planet to miss such a heinous challenge.

Bad, Bad news, still our best player by far but also he is quite unique, we dont have anyone else in the squad who does what he does. He is the glue that makes us tick.

Ref was shocking last night if only for awarding 5 minutes of extra time!!

The challenge was awful no two ways about it and despite what some have said, Didzy will be missed!

But there probably isn't one of you who'd be complaining about it if had been one of our players on a Wednesday player and you'd be happy the Ref (as poor as he was) missed it and didn't send our player off!!

Keep it in perspective guys!!

running out "didn't cost us the game. You don't rely on an opponent getting sent off to hang on to a lead".

Which game were you watching? McGoldrick was assaulted in the fourth minute. Not only was Loovens not dismissed but McGoldrick could not play second half...and will probably miss next 8 games.

Loovens should have been sent off. I have seen players marched for much less than that. Hopefully he can be cited and disciplined albeit later. I would have no hesitation in saying the same thing if it was one of our players doing it. Thugs always target the most skillful players, the ones who the public pay good money to see so they are also offending against spectators. I hope Loovens gets several weeks suspension and if possible a heavy fine, part of which should go to Didz. No place in the game for thuggish behaviour of this type.

Who has to ask for this attack to be looked at again? Who initiates this? Surely the club needs to do this. We will now be without our 'talisman' player for a month while Loovens gets away scot free. Rediculous.

5 match ban should be the punishment

Football needs a review panel like we have here in NZ for rugby so truly nasty things like this don't go unpunished. For nasty sort of thing like this a player would get a few weeks sitting on the bench here.
