Former England boss Steve McClaren is claimed to be top of Town owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential successors to Mick McCarthy.

The current Blues boss is expected to leave at the end of the season with his contract up in the summer and, according to a report in The Sun on Sunday, Evans hopes to tempt McClaren, 56, to Portman Road.

The former Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle manager is without a job at present having ended a short spell as a coaching consultant with Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of last year.

McClaren’s name is unlikely to be the last speculatively linked with Town in the weeks to come with McCarthy’s summer departure now appearing inevitable.

As previously reported, Evans is believed to be keen on former skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, who he has twice come close to appointing Blues boss in the past, however, the 54-year-old is currently riding high in League One with Blackburn Rovers and might prove difficult to prise away from Ewood Park.

Ex-Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, 45, who was sacked by Reading earlier in the week, is also understood to be among those in Evans’s thoughts as he looks to appoint McCarthy’s replacement.

Mowbray didn't exactly set the world on fire at Coventry and Middlesbrough and while he is doing well with Blackburn even McClaren had a good stint at Middlesbrough before things went pear shaped for him.

The one sacked for failing at Forest, Derby (twice) and Newcastle? The main thing Evans' previous appointments - Keane, Jewell and Mick - have in common is a Championship promotion on their CV. He's never paid compensation to poach another club's manager and after the Keane fiasco, it would appear Evans now values Championship experience most of all. So in all likelihood in a classic case of 'Be careful what you wish for' those who have hounded Mick out of the club fantasising about a 'progressive young manager' will now be saddling us with a has been like McLaren, Pardew, Pearson, McDermott.

It's all academic for me though, I don't see any truth to this. Apparently, heard this from someone that was there in the directors box the last two games, Shefki appeared to be a very popular guest of Milne, it was almost flirtatious behaviour from the latter, so I'm told. I could see that happening at some point. Although I'm not convinced by the prospect of it.

Where is the knowledge about the contemporary football scene within the top echelons of the club? The evidence seems to suggest that it's younger coaches with imagination who have cut their teeth in the lower divisions who, when given the chance in the Championship or Division One, really grab it. We might also learn something from history. Where were Bobby Robson and George Burley managing before they came to Ipswich?
