Smith Recalled From Chelmsford Loan and in Squad Travelling to Forest
Friday, 13th Apr 2018 13:01

Young central defender Chris Smith has been recalled from his loan with Vanarama National League South Chelmsford City and is in the Town squad travelling to the East Midlands for tomorrow’s game against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The 20-year-old academy product, who recently put pen to paper on a new contract which runs to the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further year, made his debut and so far only senior appearance for the Blues at Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup in August.

The former Kesgrave High School pupil returns as Town are short of central defensive options with skipper Luke Chambers out for the season, having dislocated his shoulder and fractured both a rib and his sternum at Brentford, and Adam Webster also sidelined at present due to a hamstring injury.

Smith made 28 appearances for the Clarets across two loan spells this season.

This is what we want to see: youngsters in the team, loan's sent packing as we prepare for a new dawn. Of course though, as Mr Hansen said, you can't win anything with kids. ;-)

I wonder if Klug will play him instead of Carter-Vickers. If there is no hope of C-V signing with us, it would make sense.

Klug has already said that most of the youngsters are not ready for the first team and that some he thinks have been put in too soon but were needed due to circumstances. He's also said we have the most first team minutes by U23s in the league this season. The idea MM doesn't play youngsters is sort of ridiculous. Downes and Nydam were very involved, Kenlock has played this season and last, Morris, Folami and Cotter have made debuts. Let's also not forget those who made senior debuts at Crystal Palace. On top of that the senior players are hardly a dads army.
I do think MM has also been very smart to use the non league system to get players games.
Having said that at 20 it's time to at least see where he is at this level.

No arc, Klug has said he will want to use youngsters but keep the side competitive. He isn't going to drop our only (and best) centre half for someone recalled from divison 6

To be fair to Alan Hansen his comment regarding kids would usually be right. It's just that at that moment Man U had an exceptional number of outstanding young players.

Be good to see how good Chris Smith is. I doubt if Klug would have recalled him if he did not rate him at all.

Smart move, will have a bigger role next year so makes sense while there's ‘nothing to play for', to make the most of the experience, good move from the club and Klug.

Good luck young man and enjoy being part of the 1st team squad even if you stay on the bench, yourself and others that Brian has given his attention and coaching to are the lifeblood of our club and will be given some experience even if on the sidelines but involved!!!!! and that is what this club has always been about(apart from recent times of course!!)

Also talking about the cloud lifted atmosphere around the club the article that Nash(re himself and Hogg on bbc sport football) had to say about the opportunity that they have been given to join in the think tank for our last 4 games(not been picked up by T.W.T.D though!!?? shame on you Mr Ham very slack lmao!!) was very positive.

We should immediately send all the loan players back to their own clubs and rely on our own. Some people might actually get a surprise about players like Kevin Bru who can actually play football not Muckball. Our youngsters are our future and they should also get game time ahead of other clubs players. Up the town.
