West Ham in Portman Road Friendly Talks

TWTD understands the Blues are in talks with Premier League West Ham United regarding the Portman Road pre-season friendly on Saturday 28th July.

Town recently announced that there will be a home friendly taking place on that date after a two-year hiatus but the opponents are yet to be confirmed.

The match will be new manager Paul Hurst's first in charge of the Blues at Portman Road.

Town and the Hammers most recently met in pre-season in 2014, also in Suffolk, when the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Town have already confirmed first-team friendlies away against Braintree, Crawley (at East Grinstead), Barnet and the MK Dons with further details on TWTD’s pre-season fixture list.

The Blues are also sending young XIs to Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday 14th July and Grays Athletic on Wednesday 1st August, a game arranged as part of the deal which saw Kai Brown join the academy in January.

A Town XI will also travel to the Melbourne Community Stadium to take on Chelmsford City on Wednesday 25th July.

Coggeshall Town have also confirmed that Town's U23s will play their now annual fixture at West Street on Saturday 28th July, kick-off 3pm.

Yet another step in the right direction,as there are a lot of Hammers fans all over Essex including the North East,which is only 25/30 miles from Portman Rd.This will help swell the coffers which have been somewhat depleted recently.If not possible then how about Steijn's Dutch side?

Like most am looking forward to this season more than I have in almost a decade.I am one of those who renews regardless,and although I am sure this appointment will sell a few more season tickets;it would sell many more if the early bird deadline had been extended like it was last year.

Will be surprised if the Irish jaunt is repeated next year

I really can't believe some of the negative comments on here. OK it's only a friendly, but it's against Premier opposition, it will be a good test for our youngsters and will give Paul Hurst a taste of high level football. I personally think that is a positive step and will be much better preparation than playing the other teams mentioned above. Hope it comes off and we show what we can do.

Backwards step......when is a ‘prestige' friendly not a ‘prestige' friendly? When it's against a the most deluded ‘never was' team, who are so important that they narrowly avoided relegation last season. That's when.

Here we are tugging our forlock to a club that we should be capable of standing toe to toe with. Pathetic. On principe alone we should not be entertaining this nonsense.

A proper prestige friendly to whet the appetite please. Not a nothing club.

GerkensBeard added 21:49 - May 30 Last time we played I watched Teddy Bishop dominate West Ham's midfield which featured Mark Noble pretty much all game. Would love to see him rediscover that kind of form. It was also our playoff season so hopefully a good omen

Seasider: As someone with roots in N.E. Essex, I'd just like to point out that although we've become somewhat of a dormitory region for Londoners, some of us still cling to the idea that N.E. Essex (Harwich, Clacton, even Colchester once) is traditional ITFC territory. You're right: you see a lot of Wet Spam shirts, as well as Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. But every time I see a young kid with an ITFC shirt there, I give them the thumbs up and count it as a sign that the resistance is not dead.

Throughout my years supporting Ipswich, living in north essex, I have been surrounded by friends that support West Ham.
We always jointly considered our clubs to be on an equal par regarding honours, stadiums, support, although I always had champions of England as the ace up my sleeve!
Unfortunately for us, since their victory over us in the play offs and their stay in the top flight, the gulf between the two clubs is huge. As much as it pains me to say, this is the reality.
Let's hope this fixture goes ahead.
It will give the new manager his first experience against premier league opposition and a yardstick to the task ahead.
Plus it will give me a chance to listen to stories of the icf, how they all go to watch Leyton orient when west ham are away and how they and everyone else with a slight essex accent were in the blind beggar the night Reggie shot George Cornell.
Must have been the busiest pub in London on a Tuesday night.
I bloody hate west ham fans

The games give the youngsters a chance to show off their capabilities , they would be pleased to play.Yet idiots who have probably not kicked a ball since they were at junior school think its clever to make stupid and at times offensive comments.

They have just got promoted and would bring loads of fans over for a proper trouble free party---why cant our blinkered leaders see this? We do not seem to offer the same courtesy that Dusseldorf gave us--very sad.
