Evans Outlines Vision for New Era Under Hurst
Wednesday, 6th Jun 2018 17:23

Town owner Marcus Evans says the club will be aiming to introduce a universal playing style at both academy and first-team levels and increase the Blues’ sports science expertise under new manager Paul Hurst.

“It’s a new era and a key part of my vision for the club moving forwards is to create an innovative and modern culture in the way we operate at the training ground in the development of players and coaching staff,” Evans told the club site, outlining his blueprint going forward in addition to the fundamentals previously set out in his Five-Point Plan.""

“We already have a good foundation in place and now we want to take the best of what we have and enhance it.

""“As we have always done in the past, the manager will have full authority in the running of the football side of the club and he will be ably supported by Chris Doig and existing staff covering coaching, sports science, medical, fitness and recruitment.

""“A key responsibility of Paul’s will be to oversee our evolving strategy to develop a playing style as well as a fitness and mental attitude ethos throughout all aspects of the club, and to work with [academy head of coaching and player development] Bryan Klug and the club’s coaches who will translate these goals as appropriate through all age groups. "

“To further assist the transition of players from one squad to the next there will be greater involvement of coaches across the board, so our U23 coaches will be part of the first-team set-up, while Paul and Chris will have an active role within the U23s and U18s where possible.

""“Sports science is becoming an increasingly important area of the weaponry at clubs and we are making great strides forward in this area and that will continue.

""“[Academy manager] Lee O’Neill will head up this department and will be supported by a soon-to-be-appointed first-team sports scientist and fitness coach, ensuring we transfer best practice in fitness and medical across all squads with a goal to significantly increase availability for minutes on the pitch for all players.”

The likes of Andre Dozzell, David McGoldrick, Tom Adeyemi, Emyr Huws and Teddy Bishop missed much of 2017/18 due to injury and Town hope an expanding partnership with Dr Gavin Devereux and the University of Suffolk will help reduce the casualty list going forward.

""“We will be monitoring players closely through training and games using GPS techniques,” explained O’Neill, who was the academy’s head of sports science prior to his current role, having gained a degree in that field from Loughborough University. "

“We will also be in a position to step up our observation of players’ well-being, looking for signs of fatigue, nutritional needs, making sure their sleep patterns are right. We will be doing saliva, hormone and cortisol tests.

""“There will be a constant screening of players’ physical needs using the most advanced equipment in bio-mechanics to aid strength and conditioning.""

“It is all designed to give players from first-team to academy the best possible chance of reaching their maximum potential physically and of course, reduce the risk of injury.""

“This area of the game is only part of the evolving jigsaw puzzle that makes up a football team and it’s there for the manager to take what he wants from it, but it’s important we provide the best support service we can to the players and coaching staff.”

New boss Hurst was a firm believer in sports science while at Shrewsbury, where his comparatively small squad was among the fittest teams.

He says he wants his Blues side to play on the front foot but will also expect them to put in the hard yards.

"“I won’t be reinventing the game. The requirements of hard work and commitment will be there,” the new manager, who officially takes charge on June 18th, added. "

“I will be looking for the players to give their all. That should be a minimum requirement in any team but it doesn’t always work out like that. "

“From that base, I want us to play on the front foot though. I want to have energy and intensity in our performance and, above all, I will be encouraging the players to go out and play and enjoy their job.

""“I have always tried to do that wherever I have been as a manager. To get players to enjoy the way they play on a football pitch.”

Interesting read... I wonder how many of our players have a front foot to play with. Sounds exciting anyway!

Good to hear from high authority close season. Might not be earthshaking statements but it builds that connection between fans and club. Good touch from ITFC.

The very fact that ME has verbally announced this is promising. Just need to match with more funds, not 10's of millions but enough to be competitive.

I think it's common sense and not that different to MMs attitude of squeezing everything out of a player, but with perhaps a more scientifc approach across the club. It also makes sense to have all age groups playing the same style. It all seems positive but ultimately it's about results

I believe this was long overdue, you must look after your assets and the assets must look after themselves,if we survive the first year,it will be very interesting the following,we all know now we have some real talent coming through, let's hope that hursty gets them playing football.now if we could just sign Sergio Ramos

For the first time in years! We have a plan & Direction to Where Evans Hurst & all the coaches all working together to achieve the same result: a team that from junior ranks to the first time all set up to model each other making the transition easily as you go up the ages groups eventually into the first team: I personally believe we have the Best collection of young players in my life time & watching Ipswich during a 23 year period: everything continues to be positive: whether we can do this & be a success only time will tell: by nice in a era of £££ we can show with the right coaches excellent facilities & sports science & recovery you can be a success & it's not all about spending millions of pounds: I still think we need a CB 2 wingers & another option up Top, hopefully Hurst can identify & Bring in these players to add to a squad without too many injures, we have a decent squad: we just need more depth of quality whether that's permanent or quality loan signings: I'm certainly feeling a lot more positive than I was last summer at this point: COYB

Seamless transition from junior levels right through to Senior squad : just how it should sk and have been but was not possible whilst the First team played a McCarthy brand of football and the rest of the Club played ..... well, football!
Reading between the lines I would also suggest that question marks have been asked about the Clubs training , and fitness regimes in the light of catastrophic injury list last season and the non too impressive injury list the season before. It's about time we had this joined up thinking and Cotportae Mission statement bring activated at all levels of the Club.
I'm looking forward to the breath of fresh air that is about to blow through this great Club.

COYBS!

Will somebody please tell Spruce moose that Mick has left the building. It maybe somebody's idea of codswallop but makes logical sense to have all teams playing a similar way so easier to move between them

Hormone tests?! Well, if it helps then so be it! Not sure Hurst has inherited a squad capable of playing edge of the seat football, but with a mixture of better coaching, sports science and Evans backing Hurst in the transfer market, we may just get there! Good luck. I'm actually getting excited again. Been a while.... 😁

Always used to be that way, from the youths to the reserves to the first team playing a certain way, bring it on!

Good news. I've suspected we've been behind the sports science curve for a while. A few years late but it looks as though we're getting our house in order. Well done for spotting the deficiencies and doing something about them Marcus.

All good stuff, but the squad needs some serious strengthening. Lots of players have gone. Will Evans be funding the desperately needed improvements to the team? That's the big unanswered question.

This is what Engalnd are doing. The theory being they already know the style of play if and when they transition to the first team.

Various facets of the game divided up and layered with loose principles that act as gma guide to what the team should be looking to accomplish during diffrent game situations.

Wenger changed English football and hid embracing of modern techniques was the foundation of Arsenals success, his failure to adapt as the game has continued to progress the main cause of their depth.

It's a long term vision.....

Might work but I'm excited at some out of the box thinking.

Could all be a nonsense band wagon mind.

I firmly believe that no major investment is needed if we can get/keep Huws, Dozza, Adeyemi and Bishop fit with the returning Downes and Emmanuel alongside some very talented youth she coming through all over the pitch. One or two decent additions will make up the % shortfall in points from a decent return last season all things considered. In my humble opinion of course. Add to the above a confident again Sears, who could be like a new signing if ustilsed correctly.

Sounds a very good plan. Just a thought, but what happens to some of our injury prone players if the new system still sees them always on the treatment table. Will they then be shown the door?

This sounds a lot like the Germany and England national side set up. It makes a whole lot of sense. You consider what makes your style and coach to that style throughout the club regardless of who is currently the manager.
I'm very happy with the concept for the style of giving 100% effort and playing on the front foot and looking positive.

This is very positive news indeed.

I like the fact that Evans has come out with this this broard ranging development of his five point plan now. Perhaps, just perhaps, it means he may be opening up more regularly with the fans, now that he realises that the world hasn't stopped spinning on it's axis, just because fans have been allowed to see his face and hear his voice.

I am now looking forward to next season more than I have done for many years.
