McCarthy: I Hope Fans That Hounded Me Out Enjoy the Sexy Football in League One
Wednesday, 24th Apr 2019 18:42

Former boss Mick McCarthy says he is sad the Blues have been relegated but in a spiky riposte to his detractors hopes that the fans that he says hounded him out "enjoy watching the sexy football in the first division”.

McCarthy, 60, left Portman Road a year ago this month, his relationship with fans having deteriorated markedly during the final two years of his five and a half at the club, culminating in a fractious afternoon at Brentford when he was advised by police to leave Griffin Park via a back exit.

“I was doing a good job there,” McCarthy, now back in charge of the Republic of Ireland, told Balls.ie when asked about Town’s drop into League One.

“My job is to win games and [to] stay in that league was my remit, and that's what I continued to do.

“I'm sad that they've gone down. Some of the lads are taking huge cuts in wages who were with me and who were brilliant for me.

“The staff, I've no doubt people will be losing their jobs because of it so that's going to be sad. It's a great club and pretty much most of their fans were brilliant with me.

"The ones that hounded me out, I hope they enjoy watching the sexy football in the first division [sic].”

I was a Mick fan. But time was up, you can't go to war with the fans, Replaced with the wrong man in Paul Hurst. And still unsure lambert is the right man for the job. But the place will be nearly full next year and we will support the Ipswich no matter what ! Let's get behind the team and enjoy a year of football !!!!

Laughable. Probably the most boring football I've ever seen. “Sexy”?
Mans a joke. He'll f””k up with Ireland like he's done before.

LOL. He's perfectly entitled to these comments.

Spot on when talking about his remit. Unfortunately under this owner and the lack of financial support a manager is faced with either prioritising points on the board, achieved via diligent, workmanlike, unsexy performances, or you try to play attractive entertaining football but accept that you won't win many games by doing so, with such a lack of depth and talent.

MM - try a 220 mile round trip to watch your hoof ball - Drive home always difficult with a cricked neck

I was a Mick fan.
I stuck by him but was bored of the dreary defensive football at home.
I also felt Mick had handled himself well after leaving but what a cheap way for him to act.
Dissapointing.

I dont for one second regret MM leaving as i suspect neither do the wolves fans, they would never be where they are now if he had stayed.

MM showing his class again, well lack of, just move on man!

He still can't keep his big mouth shut.
“My job is to win games and [to] stay in that league was my remit, and that's what I continued to do". Nothing here about pissing off the fans which he went out of his way to do. He had a good relationship with players and most staff, made some good signings but building a relationship with supporters (customers) was not on his list.
I wish you well with Ireland MM and suggest that you get on with your life graciously.

Frankly League 1 football is preferable to the boring anti-football produced by you Mr McCarthy.

The Republic of Ireland are welcome to you!

Best two finger salute - buy season tickets and pack the stadium week in-week-out. Something he was never able to do, that will increase his bitterness.

That comment sums up the problem the fans had with him in the first place. It still baffles me why he ever thought it was beneficial to be so antagonistic towards us. I don't miss the toxicity or the countless number of loan signings. I do embrace the new era of community, togetherness and giving youth a chance.

He was asked a question and he gave an honest answer, as he always does. I didn't think he'd be out of work for long when he left Ipswich; he's a highly respected figure in the world of professional football.

I had respect for MM for the job he did on a very tight budget, but his last season boring football and his lack of respect towards the fans meant he had to go. And he still feels it necessary to have a go at the fans, well yes we have gone down, but the feel good factor is back at the club , something he would not understand. You stick to doing your "temporary" job at Ireland and we will get on with re-building this great club!

Dissboyitfc added 19:14 - Apr 24
Minesapint... how many fans of any of the clubs he has managed would want him back? None is the answer, how many premier or championship clubs came in for him?

He has only been given a short term deal to manage Ireland as they dont see him as the future!

He is a one trick pony, boring safety first with little to no entertainment!

Why even post this story. He was asked a question, answered and had a dig at the very small minority whose abuse of him went too far. He was sincere In his comments on the staff as well. Give the guy a break and let it go. It's history and we move on
