Town Closing in On Garbutt Loan
Thursday, 11th Jul 2019 14:19

TWTD understands Town are closing in on the season-long loan signing of Everton left-back Luke Garbutt.

Rumours that Garbutt was at Playford Road surfaced earlier this month and it now appears that the 26-year-old was indeed at the club with the move having been ongoing for a few weeks.

The Blues have been in the market for a left-back this summer with Jonas Knudsen having departed at the end of last season.

Myles Kenlock was the only other established left-sided full-back, although Tristan Nydam, primarily a central midfielder, can play that role and filled in during the second half at Paderborn on Saturday.

Garbutt joined Everton’s youth set-up from Leeds in 2009 but has made only eight starts - three in the Premier League - and four sub appearances - two in the top flight - for the Toffeemen.

However, the 5ft 10in tall Harrogate-born left-back has gained plenty of senior experience while out on loan at Cheltenham, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan and Oxford United, where he spent the whole of last season and latterly featured in a left wing role.

Contracted to Everton until the summer of 2020, Garbutt has also won England caps at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.

Garbutt could join up with the squad in Germany for the final days of the pre-season camp and may make his first appearance in a Town shirt in the Interwetten Cup in Meppen on Sunday.

One loan will still be one loan too many.

wkj added 14:25 - Jul 11
@Daley Sorry, but this loan could be EXACTLY what we need. Please make this happen Town!

Cookycrew added 14:28 - Jul 11
Glad this gives good competition to MK at LB, but equally surprised he is still at Everton at 26, with so few appearances for them during 10 years on their books... (why hasn't he been sold on before now).

If it means we can sign better players on loan than what’s available on free transfers then I’m all for it. Seemed a good prospect at Everton a while ago but haven’t seen anything of him since. It’s an area of the field we desperately needed competition for sorted.

TimmyH added 14:35 - Jul 11
Hopefully not at Myles Kenlock's expense, feel we're weaker at RB and CB which needs to be sorted...

BaddowBlue1 added 14:35 - Jul 11
Kenlock needs to be pushed so this is welcome competition. Two permanent signings of a Striker and Centre Back still need to be made

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 14:53 - Jul 11
Sounds good. Just goes to show we don't know all that is going on under the radar. Competition at left back must be pretty tough at Everton when you think of who they have available there. Doubt this guy will make it in the PL - he would have done so by now - but he could be a very good addition to the L1 squad. In PL we trust.

Elmswell_Blue added 14:55 - Jul 11
He has a good loan season which ends as his Everton contract is up, we get promoted and maybe he signs for us ready for the Championship. If it doesn't work out nothing lost.

I have too laugh at the comments people continuously post....we don't need loan players, we need to buy players, we need to bring in at least # of players, Evans needs to put more money in the club.........let's look at what the manager has already stated many times this summer...his total squad is too big, he needs to remove some players FACT, there are no funds to buy players we have a 9M hole we have to fill FACT, Evans can't just plow money in to buy players for the FPP rules dictate income vs expenses being balanced FACT., lower league teams (and yes we are one) really on Loan players, even promoted teams to the premier league had Loan players last year FACT.....at some point fans need to understand the business economics of running the club as a business and not how it was in the 80's when it was more local/family owned and operated in different circumstances

1 or 2 good loan signings is fine but Lambert wont get more than that I think. Left back is an area we needed to address so pleased about this!

Wallingford_Boy added 15:21 - Jul 11
Just spoken to an Oxford season ticket holder about him.... on crazy wages apparently (£28k), horrible left back, well out of his depth, was dropped from the team, but came back in as a decent left winger. Not a bad player, but he isn't bothered about him not returning.

BeattiesBackPocket added 15:27 - Jul 11
Good player especially at this level and yes good competition however it just seems we rely to heavily on loans then say that’s not what we want? So long as it’s only a couple but every season it’s nearly 5 and that’s not good

TimmyH added 15:33 - Jul 11
Incredible!...you can see some posters on here just salivating over a possible Premier club player coming here and taking the place of one of our younger players when this is the season to find out what they're made of!...and by the sounds of it been around the block and not impressed that much. Crazy stuff!

TimmyH added 15:35 - Jul 11
Lets get a Premier loanee in to push Chambers at CB!...or will that ever happen?

baxter7 added 15:42 - Jul 11
I just wish some of you so called fans stop moaning and just support the team we are where we are and give any new players who might be coming here a chance I am sure Lambert has seen the lad play

Lightningboy added 15:45 - Jul 11
Don’t mind a couple of loans but please no more than that - far too many below average players brought here on loan in recent years.

I want our own players playing for our club.

Was very good at Col u

Now Andy. If you're going to use reasoned argument and logic we might as well shut down the comments section right now

bigolconnor added 16:03 - Jul 11
Very happy with this. We cant just flog Kenlock there for a whole season. Besides if the guys contract runs out in 2020 and he is any good, we can just sign him then for free. So reeeally, its not even a loan, more like a season long trial.

DifferentGravy added 16:08 - Jul 11
This lad is a good player and I feel he has under performed for a few seasons now. Whether on not that is down to his attitude I have no idea but he certainly has the ability to be an asset.

unknown100 added 16:19 - Jul 11
Are people really going to start complaining about loans, we don't have the money to buy and people complain about free transfers.

He's a decent player and some of the loans- Fraser, lawrence, Jonny Williams have made us a better team

Hope this comes through, a good signing

Bluearmy_81 added 16:41 - Jul 11
Evans can't spend any money because of FFP?!! What rot! Rotherham seem to be doing ok, they've got 6 in...

I haven't posted on this site for years, but if we get garbutt in it could be the best signing we have made since arron cresswell. He has lost his way a bit, it could be confidence, injuries whatever but the boy has a sweet left foot, fantastic crosser, is very fast, the right age and is the complete left sided player; he is just as good on the wing as he is at full back. With Edwards on one side and him on the other and norwood looking to be a goalscorer I would love to get Murphy for a season as well. He would really do a job at div 1 level. Also the difference with many other loans is that Garbutt is in the last year of his contract so if he is in a promotion winning side I see no reason that he wouldn't sign. I really hope we get this across the line. UP THE TOWN

Maybe Kenlock in a different position possibly?? More of a left winger to possibly allow judge to play more central?? Just an idea. I don’t know.
