20,000 Expected as Blues Face Black Cats in Home Opener
Tuesday, 6th Aug 2019 09:12
Town are expecting a crowd of around 20,000 for Saturday’s first home game of the season against League One favourites Sunderland.
“It will be a cracking atmosphere on Saturday and the support we had at Burton and the noise the fans made was fantastic. They were worth the entrance money alone,” boss Paul Lambert told the club site.
While the Blues were defeating the Brewers 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium, the Black Cats were drawing 1-1 with Oxford United in their opening fixture at the Stadium of Light.
The Wearsiders are expected to bring a big following to Portman Road.
As reported last week, Town will no longer have cash turnstiles for home fans, but tickets can be purchased in advance via ITFC Direct, while further details of ticketing this season, including on matchdays, can be found here.
Meanwhile, first-year academy scholar Cameron Stewart won his first Northern Ireland U17s cap as his side were beaten 4-0 by Sweden at their opening game at the Nordic Cup in Denmark yesterday.
The Northern Irish youngsters next face Denmark's U17s on Wednesday and then Finland on Friday. Defender Stewart joined the Blues from Linfield this summer.

Definitely looks like there'll be more when looking at the seat map.
I guess Sunderland will bring their allocation so the number could be as high as 23,000

A good performance required to keep the floating supporters coming back to Portman Road

It’s great news for the players, manager and the fans - who will enjoy a great atmosphere.
Whether Evans deserves the support is questionable though.

Heard Chris Sutton arguing with a Town fan on Radio 5 last Saturday after our win. Sutton was trying to argue that Mick didn't deserve the treatment he got, and he was laughing at us being in L1.
A win on Saturday in front of 20,000+, and life isn't quite so bad is it?

Excellent - really looking forward to it. I fancy Town to win 2-1. COYB

That is the type of crowd we will need all season, not just against the big team in the division, to help make Portman Road an intimidating place to come.

jas it's the players that deserve the support. We still believe so must they otherwise what's the point. One day ME will go but we won't.

Can't wait for Saturday!
And I wouldn't expect anything less from a ignorant budgie like Sutton. These idiots on BBC get paid to flout their ignorant inflammatory opinions.

That pillock hasn't got the brain to figure out the 1,000 reasons why McCarthy deserved every bit of treatment he got. Yes he did a solid job of keeping us in the league, but there's more to life than just surviving and staying where you are year upon year.
It amazes me how the pundits and media were completely unaware of how arrogant and disrespectful he was towards the fans long before he ever received any abuse back.
Give me a positive fan base, good attendances and a better style of football any day of the week!

Who takes any notice of him anyway ! . Our home record is pretty respectable against Sunderland. Would be a great marker to put one over on them. From what I have read they were very poor against Oxford. Can only expect a better performance sadly but think we will still win. #COYB

Winning at home in front of a noisy 20k plus crowd, if that's what LI means then I'll take that.
Get this 'big' scalp under our belts and quite a few will soon remember where PR is again.

Come on Town give us a display to show the doubters that we did shop in Harrods, we just didn't get out of the bargain basement. A good display will start to bring everyone together again.

A painting can sell for millions, yet the sum of its parts can cost only a few pounds.
It's value is who and how you bring them all together and the results you achieve with it, that makes it worth so much to admirers.
Plus some rich plonker daft enough to buy into it.
Er ... don't know where I'm going with this but COYB!

Chris Sutton is sadly correct.
MM did not deserve the treatment he got.
All abuse should have been aimed at Marcus Evans for his complete lack of ambition and support.
And if PL loses a few games on the trot due a lack of investment people will undoubtedly call for his head, rather than lay the blame at Marcus Evans's door.
Wake up. folks!
