Palace Eyeing Downes
Monday, 6th Jul 2020 17:06

TWTD understands Crystal Palace are showing interest in Town midfielder Flynn Downes.

Downes was one of the Blues’ star performers during 2019/20 and caught the eye of a number of clubs from higher divisions, among them Fulham and West Ham.

Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman was spotted at Town’s 2-1 defeat at Blackpool in February, the Blues' last away game prior to the lockdown.

It had been believed that Luke Woolfenden was the reason for the former Scotland international's trip to Bloomfield Road, however, we now understand it is Downes who has crossed Palace’s radar.

Whether the Premier League Eagles or any of the other interested parties opt to firm up their interest in the England U20 international before the start of 2020/21 remains to be seen.

The 21-year-old is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with Town having an option for a further season.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle Chronicle has dismissed this afternoon's report claiming Town are chasing Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke.

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson is said to be keen to keep the former Bradford frontman on Wearside.

Town are also reported to have shown interest in Swindon striker Eoin Doyle, 32, who is close to joining Bolton Wanderers on a three-year deal.

Get the wallet out then. Premier League money, premier league price.

Can't see a Premier club wanting to sign him after seeing him once. I've seen a lot of Wyke and Doyle as I work at Bradford City FC and I'd say no to both.

If Bolton are giving 3 year deals to 32 year olds may be they haven't learnt the lessons of the past few years very well.

Really dont want us to lose any of our young promising players. However, Downes would probably be our biggest asset and I'm expecting to lose him. From a fans point of view, it's not to bad if the club uses it to get a target man and a decent left back in. But how many times have we heard, 'we used the money to cover wages' if that's the case I would rather keep Flynn here. If he goes I just hope we get a decent fee, 10 million? But fear it could be 3 or 4 with how things are? Time will tell I guess.

He'd be loaned straight out to the championship for a season.

Blue86, i was thinking the Fee should be in the region of 10 million plus a sell on clause!

10m? When was the last time a L1 club sold a player for that, and with no proven record above the lower reaches of the championship? We will be looking at 5 maximum. He is worth a lot to us, but you've got to see it from the outside as well.

Doubt we could give him a 3 year deal....so if Bolton can he should go there....

DurhamTownFan thank you for talking sense. The boy is good and will go a long way in the game but he certainly isn't worth 10 million yet. We'll be lucky to get 5 million. The sale will be stacked with add ons and sell ons. He's a key player for us but if/when sold we'll be told we're top heavy in that area. Huws, Dozzell, Skuse, Bishop, McGavin.

Id rather lose Downes than Woolfenden simply because I think getting good defenders is harder than a CMF. This is why it makes sense to take up Nolans options. Our MF though full of talent (that we have only seen im patches) is also fragile . 5 to 6 million is top end of what we can expect plus a sell on clause if we're lucky maybe a palace youngster on loan.... I'd like to dream Wickham but thats a pipe dream

Downes is a very competent player but was he really that outstanding in Div one last season championship maybe not premier league.

Lets be realistic about any potential fee, before a meltdown starts. Only one I can think of from League 1 to go for big money is Dele Ali and that was a fee eventually rising to £5m. No disrespect but Downes isnt in his league. On that basis 3m is probably best we can hope for.

That was quite a few years ago. Fees have inflated a lot since then

Some of the potential fees being talked about here are ridiculous.

He's a League 1 player and it will be a buyers market after the pandemic. If we get much more than £1.5 million up front I'd be amazed.

One things for sure, whatever we get it won't be reinvested in the squad!

Paul Lambert is the new Mick McCarthy.

All the same characteristics, signings and approach.

BTW What is our approach apart from Skuse, Fist Pump and squad rotation?

@ dissboy, very good point about the sell on clause! Because its frustrating as hell when you see them down the line going for 30 million, 20% sell on would be good if we do try and cash in. As I say, would love to keep all our young promising players, Have to be realistic though.

Far too early to sell him. Would only get peanuts compared to two or three years ahead if he continues to progress. Future captaincy material. I am hoping that he stays and becomes a club legend but am not holding my breath ......

A good young prospect but sadly the lop sided football market will continue to get rich pickings from the lower leagues. £3m plus add ons likely to be the first offer if indeed there is an offer for a raw talent.

Dang these links are awful. Wonder what Palace think about being linked to Downes..... little do they know how good the lad is and can be. Certainly never let any team down that's for sure. Optimistically hoping he will slum it for at least half a season to see how we go. Can but hope
