Work Starts on Cobbold Stand Mural
Tuesday, 20th Jul 2021 09:53

Work has begun on the mural on the windows at the back of the Cobbold Stand paying tribute to the club's history and stars of the past.

Plans for the mural were announced in January 2020 but were interrupted by the pandemic.

The mural will cover milestones in the club's history and include players from across the generations with the first panes covered featuring John Elsworthy, Paul Cooper, Paul Mariner, Russell Osman, Frans Thijssen, Richard Wright, Titus Bramble and Luke Chambers.

The glass on the back of the Cobbold Stand had been among the areas of the ground which had fallen into disrepair in recent seasons with a plastic coating having become detached.

Without a past , we wouldn't have a great future

Buzz words, mantras and philosophies....sigh

I remember when the buzz word 'generic' came out...people 'literally' (not literal at all) couldnt wait to utter it in a sentence. The perfectly acceptable 'generally' had been cast into the abyss. In the last few years its all been about 'proactivity' 'Deep Diving' and 'Neurodiversity' that are now common language. Throughout Euro2020, England fans had decided to update from 'believe' to 'forget about the past'. I now notice some of these being used in the comments above

We all look to the future....ever hopeful that the current owners, management and players will propel us up the ladder and back into the top flight. But football is about entertainment and winning things.....and once you play well consistently....you win trophies and they become a part of your history.....and that is something to be incredibly proud of.....NOT forgotten. Narwich have a decent set up...and they are currently in a better league position than Ipswich.....but they havent won the league.....or a European trophy....or an FA Cup.....and deep down they would give anything to win one of them. Notts Forest and Villa are no longer the great teams of the early 80s....but no one can take away the fantastic achievement of winning the European Cup. John Wark won players player of the year, Frans Thijssen won fwa player of the year.....I dont recall the hugely overrated David Beckham winning either of those.

Ive heard some fans saying that it doesnt matter how you play as long as you win. Occasionally you get a team that flukes its way to a tournament victory(Greece or Chelsea spring to mind) but invariably (as England did in 2018 and 2020) you get found out by a better team....and that certainly applies to a season. The best players and teams win things. Its no coincidence Zidane, Maradona, Matthaus, Messi, Iniesta, Original Ronaldo(El Phenomenon) all reached European Cup/Copa America/Euro/World Cup finals on multiple occasions.

......Which is another reason why we cast an eye to the past. The great players and teams of the 60s/70s/80s....playing daring, attacking football and winning trophies. Even in the 90s and 2000s we had exciting players such as Holland, Dozzell and Magilton.....and it certainly isnt just attacking players that are remembered.

So lets look to the future with hope......hope of decent players, entertaining football, goals, moving up the league and perhaps one day winning a major trophy again. But I for one will never forget about the fantastic players, managers and teams that Ipswich have had and their achievements

Shame they couldn't have figured out a way to apply the images to a flat surface in front of the windows so we didn't have the vertical window slats between the glass panes slicing through the artwork.

Bigpauly. Ur clearlyveither a scumvfan or just an idiot. I suspect the former. And let's face it, as a fan of a club that in its honours list, has fa cup semi finalists, uefa cup participants, and actually had a civic reception for beating bayern munich u clearly have no history to fall back on. Which is why u criticise town fans, who do.

People questioning who should or should not be on the mural from our past. But the article says "first panes". So doesn't this mean there will be more where the likes of Muhren, Mills, Magilton, Holland and Graeme Harbey will he featured?

GH mention is made with a heavy hint of irony before I get slammed btw!

I agree with blues1 there will be many more added to it after all how can you have Titus Bramble there and not the great Kevin Beattie. Patience is a virtue.

Popped down to the ground this morning, Cobbold stand being stripped of the plastic and they are already at halfway line, Murals going in behind from a second team. Inside the ground view from the shop looks like lots of cleaning already been done. Felt obliged to spend a few quid.....

@ Bigpaulyd1

You just insulted Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, did you not get any this morning or something??

Their achievements and the players that played for them deserved to be remembered, honoured in every stand of Portman Road until Portman Road and or Ipswich Town F.C no long exist, if you cant take pride in our history including more recently George Burley's time as manager and the players that played under him then you are not fit to wear the shirt!!

Have some f**king respect for those we lost from all of the above mentioned teams and indeed those that are alive to tell the tail, we may never see days like that again, you can't have a future without a past to look back on!!

JewelintheTown thinks the displays would look better without the vertical slats!! Has he not considered they may be necessary to hold the panes of glass in place. Yet another client of this site who cannot help but moan about everything. Although I have not seen it close up the photos show that this is a wonderful artwork that will brighten up what was formerly a rather dismal frontage to our super stadium. Keep the transformation of team and infrastructure going and COYB

in all this talk of who should be on the windows and on the pillars i can not believe that Roger Osborne is not up there as it was his goal at wembley that started all our golden years

Completely agree with Durham Town Fan, Chambers as a legend?? What about Mickey Stockwell, John O'Rourke the list can be endless but for God's sake Chambers cost us so many points over the last few seasons, next thing people will want mcCarthy up there who I blame as much as anyone for taking is to such low depths on the playing front.

Shepton mallet. Chambers has every right to he up there. Ok, his form dipped in his last few seasons but that never altered his passion or his love for the club. You only needed to see his interview when he was leaving to see how upset he was to be going. So no, maybe not the best player weve had, and nor were some others others wholl be on that mural. But every player up there will have earned the right to be on there as part of the history of the club.

Remember there are lots of panels to complete… the pictures only show a few completed. Let's see who else appears. Either way, it's going to look fantastic and a massive improvement on what was there previously! Can't wait for the season to start and to see the finished article up close.
